When memory and/or cognitive functions become confused/disrupted, it is still possible to create powerful and meaningful connections, through mindful relationships and creativity, that can prevent the escalation of frustrated or distressed communication. Agreed. One big pressure is time. It often can take more time to support an individual’s identity than to do something for them or make a decision for them. But it is worth the time. #AlzChat

@IRememberBetter @marneywalker @naomi_gallant I imagine many caregivers work behind the scenes for their pwd, allowing them to 'carry on as normal ' for as long as possible. yes. Have just completed a small project showing that initial resource-intense input (that values personhood/humanity), really does increase person's sense of confidence/spirit and even abilities (thought to be 'lost'). But more importantly increased sense of enjoyment. #AlzChat

That's a great idea regards memory machine. Also thinking big life questions (ancient philosophers posed) re 'What is identity?' Keep seeing it's quite complex; made up of so many facets. Have also been questioning how relevant identity is to enjoyable life/connections #AlzChat
Bikerwise @bikerwise
#alzchat Also mustn't assume that what they were interested in when young remains their interest. Not only do interests change but they can change during the dementia journey.

This requires adequate and trained staffing. In my observation, nursing/care staff members often have responsibilities which don’t give them much time with individual patients. So the television is a substitute. #AlzChat

What a beautiful phrase. Sense of how deeply embedded #personhood is. #TomKitwood said it was something 'bestowed' or recognised by another person. Many would say personhood can be undermined, but essence is always present (even if not fully acknowledged) #AlzChat @creativitycare

#alzchat @AlzChat Hello all. It's been 6 yrs this week since my Auntie passed. I wrote & shared a song back then, some of you may have heard it. There's a lyric - "I still see you"... It's very personal and sad but reflects my journey with her, a prequel to my mom. 1/3

yes great work by @sallyknocker. Looking forward to reconnecting. We have slightly different approaches, but both very creative and wonderful to see people enjoying their work, as they increase person-focused, creative and meaningful experiences. :) @creativitycare #AlzChat

@KarrieMarshall Cultural identity is very important to attend to also. Good compassionate care can still be inadequate if one's culture (language/food/music etc) is not an aspect of that care. Personhood is very broad & needs to include the finer details of a person's life. #Alzchat

@journeyofcareM @KarrieMarshall Is this part of the training of professionals? Supporting cultural or personal identity in various settings & interactions I had involving care of my elder family members, w/ & w/o dementia, was limited (a few belongings from home & clothing items) often for security. #AlzChat

@bikerwise @IRememberBetter That's very true, much is cast aside. One constant for my mum is listening to music, and not necessarily of her era. She's equally enthralled with any music that has a good rhythm & beat. She sits & taps her feet, moves her hands around and is completely absorbed. #Alzchat
