Good point. There is no one right way to care... and we will think different ideas about how best to care on different days, depending on energy levels, understanding, wellness, level of support etc ... it is definitely a journey of discovery #AlzChat

@creativitycare Hello All - Early days when mum was on her own, we set up an every day call time. It worked for awhile till she got more forgetful. At times too she let me know she didn't really want to talk every day ! Also arranged neighbours to check on her, even a social worker. #Alzchat

I arranged with the post office to keep that type of mail aside, and sorted out stop payments with her bank. What she didn't know, didn't effect her. #Alzchat

@creativitycare @IRememberBetter Long distance caring for my family members was especially challenging if the person lived alone. I had to respond quickly to emergencies. It was helpful when they had a strong network of friends/neighbors; but many people living w/ a dementia lose that kind of support.#AlzChat
Caroline @journeyofcareM
@creativitycare An add on to this is , once I had to phone the police to check out something mum had said happened and they said if I wanted they could do a drive by regularly, as they did for another family. I thanked them but declined, but good to know they would do that. #Alzchat

@creativitycare I'm sure lots of people take advantage of meals on wheels, home food delivery as that's another excellent way for pwd to keep healthy and have daily interaction. #AlzChat

A long distance carer in US should be mindful that concerned neighbors may contact Adult Protective Services if they feel your loved one is not getting enough support from family. This adds a layer of gov’t review of your caring & could lead to a guardianship proceeding.#AlzChat

@nursesKidONE And I've read has led to some horror stories with the ppl worse off with state guardians. From my experience too, with a gov't involved aspect, there's a whole layer of other ppl's interests that are sometimes not in the pwd interest at all. #Alzchat

@helenfindlay @creativitycare Similar to here where a gov't care worker works with the person when in the home, then when they go into a home, the care worker's role is over. You are right, continuity is so important. Here, change would be through political channels as it relates to gov't funding. #Alzchat

@helenfindlay @creativitycare Maintaining continuity of good care providers who know your loved one should always be a priority of the care partner. #AlzChat

@ThatVDOVault While I was home sick, my mom’s neighbors complained to me that she was not changing her clothes. I forgot about the duplicates & similar colors among her casual clothes. She could not explain to them, but she let me know how annoyed she was by them. #PPA #AlzChat

@TommyTommytee18 @HitchmoughPaul @PatBroster Many cities in US have special transport services as part of their public transit systems that may provide transport to medical appointments. Some communities have private ride sharing services for this & some nonprofits have volunteer drivers. #AlzChat

@TommyTommytee18 @HitchmoughPaul @PatBroster In the US, reading insurance documents, fighting w/ private insurers & w/ third party billing (revenue cycle management) companies of hospitals, doctors & other providers is valuable assistance that can be offered to a person living w/ a dementia & their care partner. #AlzChat

@ThatVDOVault @TommyTommytee18 But it’s important to remember that a worker in a hospital network may tend to give preference to utilization of resources within that network, even if more appropriate resources are available outside of the network to meet the person’s needs. #AlzChat #NOConflicts
