Happy Thursday, people! If it's 4pm EDT/1pm PDT, that means it's time for our weekly #CADAChat, where we talk about #addiction and #recovery.

Q3: What are some advantages of outpatient treatment? #CADAChat
Family Addiction Coach πŸ’™ Patrick Doyle MSW @PatrickDoyle_35
A1/ Always best to start with a Clinical Assessment of not only substance use but also possible depression, risk factors e.g. suicidal ideation, family history, medical illnesses; by highly trained specialist with years experience=evidence based treatment plan #CADAChat @kgainc https://t.co/bxEbloT565

A3: Outpatient treatment can be great for people who can't afford to pay for inpatient treatment, or for people who can't take off work or be away from home for long periods of time. It offers flexibility. #CADAChat
Recovery.org @Recovery_Org
A2: Inpatient tends to have higher success rates as opposed to outpaitent. You're with your support system at all times and learning how to live your new life without drugs. #CADACHat https://t.co/IAPHML6A0n

Recovery.org @Recovery_Org
@deanokat I feel like for outpatient you really need to be ready for treatment and dedicated to your recovery. It will definitely be a harder journey but SO worth it! #CADAChat
Dean Dauphinais πŸ• @deanokat
@Recovery_Org If someone's addiction isn't off the charts, I will usually suggest they start with outpatient and see how it goes. You can always "upgrade" to inpatient if necessary. #CADAChat
Family Addiction Coach πŸ’™ Patrick Doyle MSW @PatrickDoyle_35
A2/ Inpt needed for detox; may not be necessary for rehab. Some pts benefit from being far from home; if home is unsafe, flight risk, etc. I'd never try to assume inpt is best; always rely on thorough assessment from qualified licensed clinician #CADAChat https://t.co/zsTlCxWfNV https://t.co/ToYG1vOwSp

@DrugAbuse @Recovery_Org Wow. Kudos to you for using the word "tantamount." πŸ‘πŸ‘ #CADAChat
Dean Dauphinais πŸ• @deanokat
A4: Cost, of course. And whether or not they take your insurance, if you have it. What kind of programs they offer. Do they have a family program for relatives/loved ones? Will they treat co-occurring disorders if you have them? #CADAChat
Family Addiction Coach πŸ’™ Patrick Doyle MSW @PatrickDoyle_35
A3/ Outpt better for OUD medications methadone, buprenorphine, vivitrol used; positive home environment/support. Avoids disconnect after residential, often pts don't attend aftercare if different program; allows for better continuity of care, AA #CADAChat https://t.co/zsTlCxWfNV https://t.co/QYeiHrcZX6
Recovery.org @Recovery_Org
A4: Ask yourself: Will this program work with me & how I want my recovery to go? Do you want therapists? Would you like your loved ones to be able to visit you? Do they have a post-treatment plan? Set yourself up for success! Only you know what would work best for YOU! #CADACHat https://t.co/PXTkcCATPN

A5: Do a lot of research. Online research can be helpful. Maybe ask hospitals, too. And see if any friends or family have experience with certain facilities or outpatient programs. #CADAChat

Q6: What are the pros and cons of going to a residential treatment facility that isn’t close to home? #CADAChat
Dean Dauphinais πŸ• @deanokat
A6: Pros... Traveling for treatment can be a positive because it gets the addict away from familiar surroundings/triggers. A change of scenery can often be one of the best things for recovery, IMO. #CADAChat
Family Addiction Coach πŸ’™ Patrick Doyle MSW @PatrickDoyle_35
@Rehabs A5/ I'd agree partially, however alumni can't tell you about the pts it DIDN'T work for, who may have left early or may not have survived their disease. Many programs are rigid offering only one path to recovery; won't work for everyone #CADAChat https://t.co/zsTlCxWfNV
Dean Dauphinais πŸ• @deanokat
A6: Cons: It could cost $$ to get to and from treatment. And it can be difficult for loved ones to visit. But that can also be a pro, I think. #CADAChat

A6: Another pro of sending a loved one further away from home for treatment: It makes it harder for them to walk away. If they have nowhere to go, they will be inclined to stay! #CADAChat
