Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We say hi @ClarissaGiebel and look forward to your questions that we'll be prefacing as Q1, Q2 etc #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Lots to chat about but before we do, our icebreaker....what do you think about when you hear the words health inequalities and do you or can you relate it to dementia? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We're going to look at three themes, not necessarily in this order: location , groups and risk reduction but also know that your tweets will help inform the discussion and take it in directions we don't know about yet! As you know, we do chat! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Looking out for you ideas or thoughts on health inequalities and also, please think about dementia on this and then, we'll ask @ClarissaGiebel to ask the first question...this is host to guest hospitality #diversealz
Bikerwise @bikerwise
@ClarissaGiebel #diversealz intermittently with you tonight.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Let's get the conversation started and see where we go. @ClarissaGiebel over to you #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
So, to formalise our icebreaker, we have Q1 What do you think when you hear the word health inequalities? #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
A1. One concern is inequality of access to accurate and complete assessments. This also affects quality of research on prevalence of dementia in groups when it is based on a review of medical records & billing codes. #diversealz

Question 2: Where you live can determine the care you receive even the information. Why should this matter? Do you have any experience/knowledge of this? #diversealz
Bikerwise @bikerwise
@TommyTommytee18 #diversealz Totally agree with you Tommy. Just told it is a foregone conclusion of dementia rather than given support to fight it.

@DiverseAlz #diversealz This has become very obvious to us since husband's diagnosis. We get no health support other than through our GP from our health authority, no specialist support. Fortunately I found out about national level support.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 2 touches on the notion of postcode or zip code and how treatment can vary greatly. Any thoughts on this? #diversealz

@ClarissaGiebel @WHO This graphic suggests to me a possible causal relation between access to public school education and health inequalities. Could access to employment/economic opportunities be a factor in persistence of health inequalities? #diversealz

Q3! Thinking about groups in particular (any groups!) - are there any health inequalities in dementia you can think of/ have experiences with? #diversealz via @ClarissaGiebel
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We turn to groups via question 3 and health inequalities. We are aware of minority groups (and think globally); people of colour, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender. Also think people with learning disabilities, people who are deaf/blind. #diversealz

@DiverseAlz A2. I’d like to understand why discussion on dementias among African Americans seems limited to Alzheimer’s & vascular dementias. Is anyone researching FTD in African Americans? Is differential Dx important in all groups? Lack thereof affected support for my mom. #diversealz

Seeing on timeline how getting help around dementia if from South Asian community can be more difficult. With respect, will like to add that there are several communities where this applies. Must give kudos however to researchers focusing on this area 1/2 #diversealz

2/2 giving kudos to advocates also in South Asian communities, notably in UK, who are working hard to have their vooices heard and changing perceptions #diversealz

@ClarissaGiebel My mom was diagnosed using the MMSE, which turns out not to have been appropriate when a language deficit is the primary symptom. Probably didn’t help that most of her doctors hadn’t had any history w/ her. Her primary had retired. #diversealz

Back on timeline....the "look after their own" always brings a reaction and with it assumptions. See African Caribbean mentioned. Let's add Irish community. However, let's also remember how times change and can add whole range of social, economic and cultural issues #diversealz

last question on tonight's #diversealz chat: how to ensure everyone has access to @dementia care when needed?
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
@ClarissaGiebel @bikerwise @alzheimerssoc @CAPHRI_UM Is anyone studying possible inequalities in “non-dementia related” health care in or out of care homes after diagnosis? My concern is that changes are mistakenly attributed to progression & not addressed, resulting in an adverse impact on quality of life of a PLWD. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Q7 @ClarissaGiebel asks what do you think needs to be done to make sure that everyone can access #dementia care at the right time? #diversealz

Have got to ask Question 8 before forget as have seen research on the timeline and dementia and research appears to be at the forefront of most things #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 8: What needs to be done to encourage people to participate in research. Inequalites lie in the lack of recruitment of certain groups. Also wondering, on another matter, if gender comes into play? #diversealz

Question 9: Could notion of "they look after their own" be a barrier to accessing dementia care/information? Health inequalities often made difficult by sterotypes and perceptions. Earlier @TommyTommytee18 mentioned how some groups characterised by mental illness #diversealz

starts with changing perceptions of what dementia is - and isn't. @DementiaFriends @Hilar4Charity two groups raising awareness and eliminating the stigmas that may go along with diagnosis

We haven't mentioned this but as a by the way...education is of great importance...may a discussion ensue if interested cc @nursesKidONE #diversealz
