#diversealz Thurs on the hour: focusing on what people with dementia can do- creating a sense of independence for people with dementia and I course of discussion we will and do recognise that everybody is different.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Good day wherever you are and welcome to #diversealz focusing on what people with dementia can do based on notion some people have preconceived ideas. But also looking at what could work when dementia worsens

@helenfindlay Good evening. We're starting off with some stereotypes as an icebreaker. Was going to say some of the things people with dementia supposedly cannot do but that is a disservice so general works..#diversealz.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We've put our icebreaker out there, which will monitor but given time, let's go ahead with question 1. #diversealz

Question 1: How can people help people with dementia remain independent? Broad question but let's see where it takes us. It has many strands but behind it in this instance or needs of people whose dementia may have worsened. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
@DiverseAlz The biggest stereotype is that all PLWD have amnestic Alzheimer’s dementia. Neurodegenerative disease can affect other cognitive domains, such as language, while leaving memory relatively unaffected. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Advanced dementia. Question 1 was asking how one can help people with dementia stay independent. It also asks you to consider people with advanced dementia. #diversealz

Tweet via @MumbytheSea is a good starting point for this discussion which is MT to get to know the person [with dementia] as well as you can. We'll be coming back to that thought and acknowledge many of chat would agree or say the same if not mentioned already. #diversealz

Re: question 2 a how can some of these stereotypes affect our judgement, seen words/sentences on the timeline: MT @DeeDavies12 "loses all independence and requires nursing support"; can't learn via @TommyTommytee18; dementias. Will be exploring these #diversealz

RT @helenfindlay:

@TommyTommytee18 In the US, most courts & Adult Protective Services are not appropriately trained to implement & oversee arrangements for appropriate support that enables a PLWD to remain living independently. Instead, “safety” & “competence” are invoked to curtail rights of PLWD. #diversealz

A2. Stereotypes, when held by healthcare professionals, adversely affect quality of care for a PLWD. E.g., the attending geriatrician assumes that, “bec of the dementia,” Mom won’t benefit from inpatient rehab after surgery for a hip fracture. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 4: how do we address the idea that some people have, which as @MumbytheSea says is "hugely incorrect?". Infact...is an assumption that could end badly depending on the context #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
RT @ThatVDOVault Stereotypes can prematurely rob a person living with #dementia of their autonomy #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 5 based on @ThatVDOVault that is so apt so wait for it and then we'll pause to give you all time to catch up and feel you can engage more #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 5: Can you list ways in which stereotypes can prematurely rob a person living with #dementia of their autonomy? #Diversealz. Have used much of @ThatVDOVault words here
2centscorner @2centscorner
@DiverseAlz Key factor is “observation.” A persons lives a 24hr day. A telephone call, or a short visit doesn’t provide the full scope of a 24hr day. I suggest, plan a long week/end visit and just “listen” and “observe.” #diversealz

Question 6 comment via @wendymo94921768 who refers to care homes and some that take a person's independence away because they do everything for them. Also, some will have rules that are not enabling #diversealz. Let's also remember that this can happen in other contexts too
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 6: what are your thoughts when autonomy is taken away from a person with dementia? @wendymo94921768 mentioned particular experience in a care home where in end same for all residents. Have heard of this many times. #diversealz
