Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz #diversealz Thurs on the hour: focusing on what people with dementia can do- creating a sense of independence for people with dementia and I course of discussion we will and do recognise that everybody is different.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good day wherever you are and welcome to #diversealz focusing on what people with dementia can do based on notion some people have preconceived ideas. But also looking at what could work when dementia worsens
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz #Diversealz Thurs let's start with late icebreaker. What are some of the stereotypes surrounding dementia?

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @helenfindlay Good evening. We're starting off with some stereotypes as an icebreaker. Was going to say some of the things people with dementia supposedly cannot do but that is a disservice so general works..#diversealz.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We've put our icebreaker out there, which will monitor but given time, let's go ahead with question 1. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1: How can people help people with dementia remain independent? Broad question but let's see where it takes us. It has many strands but behind it in this instance or needs of people whose dementia may have worsened. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz The biggest stereotype is that all PLWD have amnestic Alzheimer’s dementia. Neurodegenerative disease can affect other cognitive domains, such as language, while leaving memory relatively unaffected. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Advanced dementia. Question 1 was asking how one can help people with dementia stay independent. It also asks you to consider people with advanced dementia. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2...soon will be based on responses from @nursesKidONE @helenfindlay in the icebreaker - both connected, both relevant as #diversealz asked about stereotypes
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Okay...Happy Thursday everyone!! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Tweet via @MumbytheSea is a good starting point for this discussion which is MT to get to know the person [with dementia] as well as you can. We'll be coming back to that thought and acknowledge many of chat would agree or say the same if not mentioned already. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Advanced Dementia - Communication in advanced dementia, resource from @SCIE_socialcare tweeted via @helenfindlay: https://t.co/TUfrp0bZWl Do take a look at SCIE. They produce some excellent publications and resources #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2: How can some of these stereotypes impact our judgement @nursesKidONE alluded to dementia types @helenfindlay to communication (think verbal, non verbal) #diversealz. There is a method to this question...
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @DeeDavies12:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Re: question 2 a how can some of these stereotypes affect our judgement, seen words/sentences on the timeline: MT @DeeDavies12 "loses all independence and requires nursing support"; can't learn via @TommyTommytee18; dementias. Will be exploring these #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @TommyTommytee18 In the US, most courts & Adult Protective Services are not appropriately trained to implement & oversee arrangements for appropriate support that enables a PLWD to remain living independently. Instead, “safety” & “competence” are invoked to curtail rights of PLWD. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz A classic via @helenfindlay must talk slowly to a person with dementia or ask someone else about them especially if they are sitting or standing next to "you". Modifying Dr Findlay's comments but you get the drift #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Much to chat about and monitor as you are all leading this chat so it's our pick and mix option. Tweeting quite a few questions so don't lose flow and you choose to answer as and when #Diversealz
2centscorner @2centscorner RT @nursesKidONE: @DiverseAlz The biggest stereotype is that all PLWD have amnestic Alzheimer’s dementia. Neurodegenerative disease can affect other cognitive domains, such as language, while leaving memory relatively unaffected. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @TommyTommytee18:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 4 is based on @MumbytheSea response highlighting a stereotype RT #Diversealz that all plwd are the same....hugely incorrect #diversealz
2centscorner @2centscorner RT @DiverseAlz: Question 1: Question 1: How can people help people with dementia remain independent? Broad question but let's see where it takes us. It has many strands but behind it in this instance or needs of people whose dementia may have worsened. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE A2. Stereotypes, when held by healthcare professionals, adversely affect quality of care for a PLWD. E.g., the attending geriatrician assumes that, “bec of the dementia,” Mom won’t benefit from inpatient rehab after surgery for a hip fracture. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 4: how do we address the idea that some people have, which as @MumbytheSea says is "hugely incorrect?". Infact...is an assumption that could end badly depending on the context #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @ThatVDOVault Stereotypes can prematurely rob a person living with #dementia of their autonomy #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 5 based on @ThatVDOVault that is so apt so wait for it and then we'll pause to give you all time to catch up and feel you can engage more #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 5: Can you list ways in which stereotypes can prematurely rob a person living with #dementia of their autonomy? #Diversealz. Have used much of @ThatVDOVault words here
2centscorner @2centscorner @DiverseAlz Key factor is “observation.” A persons lives a 24hr day. A telephone call, or a short visit doesn’t provide the full scope of a 24hr day. I suggest, plan a long week/end visit and just “listen” and “observe.” #diversealz

2centscorner @2centscorner RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz "listen" and "observe" tweets @2centscorner and this is so key. Anyone disagree? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Any answers? #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 6 comment via @wendymo94921768 who refers to care homes and some that take a person's independence away because they do everything for them. Also, some will have rules that are not enabling #diversealz. Let's also remember that this can happen in other contexts too
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 6: what are your thoughts when autonomy is taken away from a person with dementia? @wendymo94921768 mentioned particular experience in a care home where in end same for all residents. Have heard of this many times. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @helenfindlay @MumbytheSea @nursesKidONE Good point and yet...who is going to do it? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Also have to be aware of generalisations made in good faith that incorrectly label some groups #diversealz
S Olson, B.S, J.D. @ThatVDOVault @LynnGamble20 @wendymo94921768 @DiverseAlz This learning curve is huge for #family & professional #carers #caregivers & #carepartners as well as people living with #dementia #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @Shedfieldlodge:
S Olson, B.S, J.D. @ThatVDOVault @DiverseAlz @wendymo94921768 A6 The ending for people living with #dementia is the same (death) but the RATE at which they arrive there varies wildly so it makes sense to be more observant & empowering wherever possible. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Look
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @LynnGamble20:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz A3. This generalization is based on the history of dementia being considered a disease of the elderly &, therefore, requiring no interventions, but only “custodial care” until death. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @wendymo94921768 @ThatVDOVault thank you for this share. shows there is a discussion for carer's too . Nice to hear about the home #diversealz

2centscorner @2centscorner @DiverseAlz Mom, who is incapacitated and unable to communicate verbally, still communicates “tired” and “hungry” with an exasperated hmm sound. When she’s “content/happy” shakes her left foot. (My siblings and I have watched this happy foot shaking all our lives). #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Our next few questions are going to be scenarios #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz question 7 Betty has discovered partner has early onset dementia. She believes it to be memory loss. She does everything for him and won't let him go out. She even tries to finish his sentences and speak for him. He can still do this himself. Thoughts? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @helenfindlay @rcolemanvoices @MumbytheSea @nursesKidONE Agree. We know that awareness sessions and events at local levels can help. #diversealz
2centscorner @2centscorner @ThatVDOVault @wendymo94921768 @DiverseAlz Do you think this has to do with liability? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Raising awareness is aim of @willibenext #diversealz Documentary film and more
S Olson, B.S, J.D. @ThatVDOVault @DiverseAlz A7 Betty is worried about her partner, thinks she is being loving & protective but probably does not know any different from the more typical care model of parenting a child. A huge learning curve for society. #dementia #DiverseAlz
