Hello everyone! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We’re a friendly on #diversealz. Many of us have been chatting 4 years and hours! Lots of networks & imp associations formed. All welcome. Pls Treat everyone with respect. Individually, we might not agree with everything but we can disagree with grace.

Hello, happy....h for dementia proving to be a nice word on the horizon so far! #diversealz

@DiverseAlz #diversealz Humanity, hope and happiness, and because I have to go soon and won't be back until the chat is over, haste. so for the topic, I would like to see the drugging of people in care homes to stop. Hope here today in B.C. Canada https://t.co/Sd5ffbNqaF #health #dementia
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Please keep H words continuing throughout chat as you do. Meanwhile, here is question 1 #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 1: what is the first word that you think of when somebody mentions care homes. Please tweet first word that comes to mind #diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM
@DiverseAlz #diverseAlz desolation
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
Honesty:an issue that arises frequently in dementia care: between PWD & care partner or family member; between a professional or institutional provider & their patient; in clinical trial research requiring informed consent by participant; in contracts of care homes. #diversealz

Question 2: what can one hope from care homes? Hope (#a2zdementia) mentioned by @helenfindlay #diversealz

Chuck @OrangeChuck
@MAREP_UW Yeah! You rarely hear a news story about good care sadly. Even see stories of people being cared for at home that have sad endings with abuse or stealing from patients. :( #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Thank you everyone. Such good one worded answers coming from question 1. Seems aim is going to be to frame questions around all of them. Stay tuned #diversealz. Going to be long night here but not for y’all! We pioneered 24 hour dementia chat

so significant that we are starting conversation with a word from H our #a2zdementia letter and the powerful word Hope. Thanks @helenfindlay for starting us off #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
I think it's a mistake to base any relationship with a care home on hope. One must recognize that it is a business. Businesses are operated with varying ethical standards. Therefore caveat emptor and get any promises in writing in clear language as a start. #diversealz https://t.co/INbk4LMYYF
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@Shedfieldlodge Have you given us your one word? It could be significant. #diversealz Will come back to experiences and the b word

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
There are two perspectives with the word hope and care homes. we have @nursesKidONE reminding us of practicalities, important and then seeing on timeline wishes, which can be equally important. Thoughts? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Referred to wishes earlier and on reading @Shedfieldlodge and mention of "bad" experiences of many, there can also be hope for example that good homes can retain/maintan those standards. seen in past via @Minghowriter @helenfindlay tweets #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 3: how important is the concept of home? #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
Important for people to be realistic & prepared. Then, if things go as "hoped," it's a bonus. If not, be prepared to take action. Care home choices should not be based on marketing but on actual operations. And recognize that there could be a change of management. #diversealz https://t.co/lkNAi4BgqM

Very for many I would imagine. I think we all want the desire for wherever we are to feel like home & to feel comfortable. #DiverseAlz https://t.co/hGAHMbgm7y
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
But not a dysfunctional home. You want a home where each individual is respected and has appropriate freedom of self-expression as well as optimal support and care. #diversealz https://t.co/cFsA30iI9q
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Along with the question on home has to be hope/wish/desire that the care home becomes a home/home from home (repetitions intentional) to person with dementia? #diversealz possible? some good experiences on timeline @Shedfieldlodge

Here is the problem: I bet if I Google about care homes, my guess would be the I would find negative news stories about bad experiences and only good articles are PR from the homes themselves. This creates fear or at least the unknown. #diversealz https://t.co/oL65ZC9dFG

I want to also add that I am sure there are some great homes out there and staff/people who love and care for PLWD but we rarely if ever hear these stories except in our chats. #diversealz https://t.co/Jq7aji6wy6

Media roles. media stories mentioned by @OrangeChuck and negative stories. Sadly, he is right and of course, we've researched lots of times. Ask often for good stories and examples. Makes difference #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck
Mom was diagnosed almost 10 years ago and I have only seen one positive news story since on care homes and that was about a cool idea for a dementia village in Europe. Yet far too often I see viral videos or stories of crimes/abuse that occurs. #diversealz https://t.co/Z7AFD7pNst

Question 5: you have been singled out as somebody who would know how to choose a good care home for a person with dementia How would you respond? #diversealz BTW you could be a person with dementia or have a link/association
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
Many people also fear completing the legal documents which would give someone else control. Control is the key; people don't want to lose control of their lives. Isn't that why Alzheimer's is feared: it is associated with loss of control? #diversealz https://t.co/VMTqcQlZyx

Reports by @CareQualityComm mentioned. Perhaps good to use as guide. Also @Crouchendtiger7 Mum's test, based on would the home be good enough for your mum or other relative of course. Actually, #diversealz asks would it be good enough for you?
Chuck @OrangeChuck
@TommyTommytee18 I agree my friend. I only switched mom over to such undergarments because the accidents were becoming more normal without saying anything. I also try to do regular bathroom visits to help reduce amount of said accidents still. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Want to tweet question 6 just to put it out there. Here it is #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 6: what questions would you ask staff at a prospective care home? #diversealz With @nursesKidONE on chat who is good with important practicalities, contracts, legalaties are so key #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck
@MAREP_UW I agree 100%! But I think sometimes that also depends on the area. Here in our area, we have family friends with nothing positive to add and a care home making news often for being understaffed/unqualified & issues that rise from such care. It's sad. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@MAREP_UW Ha...humour as well... the subject of next week's chat as we need some light relief after 2 weeks as one does with dementia...#diversealz That said, look forward to reading your post chat responses and will certainly do some recaps.
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
No doubt that there are good care homes. However, in the current economic climate, care homes are targets for investors whose primary/only goal is to make money from individuals who pay privately or from government funding of long term care. 1/2 #diversealz

2/2 Add to this that large segments of the care home industry are not appropriately regulated or monitored to protect the rights of individual residents. #diversealz

This is true for many. One of the main reasons I will continue mom's care for a long as I can is that mom and dad both wished for her to be cared for from home due to fears of issues they heard about. #diversealz https://t.co/nMN9dDeZxM
