Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz From a care home perspective, though relevant full stop, progression via @Shedfieldlodge, which calls on care homes [some] to embrace change. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1 is coming up -‘d it is about embracing change. Change a word that we hear often in day life from technology tonthe workplace and, in dementia care, for some, the phrase “you are going to have to change...” #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1 Why is it important to consider change and please relate this to dementia and care #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @TommyTommytee18:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz From @TommyTommytee18 the word confusion and why do people with dementia need somebody to care for them? We are using the word care with reference to self and also people who might need care or support. Roles can change so that’s an element we might explore #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz RETHINK care, as we learn more about how various types & symptoms of dementias may affect individuals in a variety of ways. Instead of moving forward based on models developed w/in constraints of old information & attitudes. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Control tweets @helenfindlay - welcome. Important that person with dementia still has some control. We can add dignity to this #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Let’s use this chat to “rethink” a word given to us by @nursesKidONE who highlights the dementias. Sodfeeent types can cause people to act in certain ways #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1 having seen a reply on timeline is quite deep. Thoughts. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE A1.Addition of more administrative layers in US system, such as 3d party billing(revenue cycle mgt) companies, advocates to negotiate with insurers & hospitals. *** 50 Secrets Hospitals Don’t Want to Tell You (But Every Patient Should Know) https://t.co/2EeAk3W05g #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2: what kind of major changes could we talk about...we’re also timetabling changing care homes as is often a question we get asked.? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We’re@lind of opening timeline today re: changes so@of you have a topic of interest please tweet as A2. Meanwhile will tweet question 3 around care homes and @helenfindlay has some gems to share and @TommyTommytee18 what have you learnt in your advocacy work? #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3: Changing care homes should not be considered lightly. Indeed unless the home gives notice (and how many do) is it ever worth a change? #diversealz #JustAsking
Chuck @OrangeChuck In my experiences with mom, change is constant and sometimes necessary as the disease progresses whether it’s helping with more basic needs, their diet or their environment to some place better for all. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Change is constant tweets @OrangeChuck and we’re@going to explore this as it relates to many of the words tweeted at during our icebreaker and certainly knowing dementia type can help #DiverseAlz
Chuck @OrangeChuck People told me moving mom from one home to another might cause issues (not a care home...actually home) but I think so long as it’s a better environment for you both, there are ways to ensure they’re still happy & cared for. #diversealz

Chuck @OrangeChuck Anxiety was consuming me to a point I’m not sure if I would have survived it and I needed to make a change for both of us. I had to make a change and two years later, I honestly think though it didn’t go as I hoped, it was the better move for both of us. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Change of staff mentioned by @TommyTommytee18 in care home setting. Can also have change of health professionals or supporters that can cause upset #diversealz

nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE "You have to be admitted by a professional with admitting privileges [at the receiving hospital]" *** Where Do You Turn When You Want a Hospital Transfer? https://t.co/9eXgmOa3de #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck This is not a tweet to get your pity. I share this experience because when I first started as caregiver, I thought for sure I’d be okay doing it alone but after almost 2 years I was becoming consumed with anxiety over adjusting to the changes in mom & her care. #DiverseAlz
Francis Fernando, RN, BSN MSc Adv HCP (Open) NMP @fernandof1974 RT @helenfindlay: @DiverseAlz Q2:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @helenfindlay Going back to remembering Charlotte Em young carer who could not stop venting about care home grandparent. Was in and yet she was proved right in the end. See @IanMcCreath point to which aligns to yours, not about size or money #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz See this

Chuck @OrangeChuck Mom was not sleeping through the night as much. UTI’s we’re becoming constant, traveling with her became harder and more changes occurred that over time just kept adding up until we both got sick at the same time and my anxiety attacks began. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay: @DiverseAlz Q2:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Chuck @OrangeChuck Also communication changed. Mom no longer says “I’m hungry” “I have to potty” or “I’m tired”. My anxiety increases with this because now it was on me to read her nonverbal cues or guess what she needs. #DiverseAlz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @Shedfieldlodge I agree that it is best to screen thoroughly before choosing initial care home. However, in the US, the commercialization of long term dementia care means mgt/staffing changes can happen quickly, & it is wise to have backup arrangements thought out. #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck For some, care homes are necessary but mom and dad wished for mom to be cared for from home so I plan to find ways to do that as long as I can by whatever means I can. I do miss having a job and making my own money but mom needs me. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Consistency is coming up on the timeline (@TommyTommytee18 ) we are rethinking (@nursesKidONE ) thanks all and really like the fact that change is ever changing with dementia as mentioned by @OrangeChuck that dementia changes constantly. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 4: Change and dementia: can we be prepared? #DiverseAlz
Caroline Bartle @3Uknz RT @helenfindlay:
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @TommyTommytee18 It is important that workers providing direct care to people with dementias be compensated to attract those with a variety of skills, including emotional intelligence, that are needed to work successfully with patients who have a variety of needs. #diversealz #notcustodialcare
Christine Collins MBE @christinezoo RT @TommyTommytee18:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We are asking if you can be prepared for change in dementia? With knowledge and information, sharing and asking, believe it to be more than possible though constantly changing as @OrangeChuck mentioned. Examples welcome. We adapt as mentioned earlier. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @wendymo94921768 @Shedfieldlodge True. Families often must make placement choices under time pressure at the time of discharge following a hospital stay. Hospitals have social workers, but, in my experience, their criteria may not be same as patient's or family's. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @TommyTommytee18:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Think one of the most valuable and powerful ways to prepare for change in dementia care is exchanging and sharing information and especially so when one realises they are not the only ones going through something or there is a tried or try a bit more solution #diversealz
Chuck @OrangeChuck I think some things you can prepare yourself for especially if you talk to people and ask about their experiences but also everyone is different and have unique changes you have to find the best ways to adapt to, hopefully with help. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Guess there are positives and negatives with change...so we are not saying it is easy #diversealz oh thumbs up again for @LynnGamble20 who went on holiday. Good for you.

nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @Shedfieldlodge @wendymo94921768 I think it's important to see various activities - and staffing-, including meal times, at different times of day & night. Also weekend vs weekday. Also know that there may be a limited right to hold up a discharge until a facility is available that can meet needs. #diversealz
