Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good day wherever you are and welcome to #diversealz here to chat about ways to address stigma
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We have an icebreaker: what springs to mind when you hear the word stigma and do relate it to dementia, if possible #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Why are we talking stigma? It's World Alzheimer's Month and this is our acknowledgement of that. Also Alzheimer's Disease International releases a survey on attitudes and stigmas in dementia. Presents an opportunity to compare our chat with findings and more #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Interestingly, in 2012 @AlzDisInt published Overcoming the Stigma of Dementia: https://t.co/PIFdXQkMZS and it is as relevant today as it was then. #Diversealz Enough chat. Time to say hello to everyone!
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Welcome @nursesKidONE hope to hear from you... #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Let's get straight into the chat and it's one question. Here we go! #diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz Ignored, losing one's voice, losing autonomy.#DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1: How can one address stigma in dementia or to paraphrase title of World Alzheimer Report 2012 overcome the stigma of dementia? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @journeyofcareM: @DiverseAlz Ignored, losing one's voice, losing autonomy.#DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @ThatVDOVault Long time. Expecting tweets and tweets from you! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @nchadborn @AlzDisInt Hello. Will be good to compare 2019 report with 2012. That said, going to analyse our tweets against some of the issues arising from new Alzheimer's Disease International report. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz This via @TommyTommytee18 i stigma and dementia in reverse. Stigma is MT A mark of disgrace ......Not on the people living with it but on society for casting us out, thinking that we should be locked away just because they have not taken the time to understand it #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @FPfende @learnhospice @helenfindlay Hello. This chat is about stigma and dementia but you know...it's there in end of life care too #diversealz #roomtochat

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2 is based on thoughts coming out from chat and may seem strange but think about it, please. Here we go #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 2 do people with dementia, carers/supporters or advocates need to "plead" their cases or take a chair and sit at the table (phrase) to get their voices heard? #diversealz

Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz Shout from the rafters too! The big issue for me is loss of consideration & voice through the legal system. Ripe for abuse. The stigma here is the false conception that the person doesn't need to be included if others can speak for them. They should always be included.#DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @nchadborn @ThatVDOVault @TommyTommytee18 @HitchmoughPaul @PatBroster True but also true in reverse where some papers have tried this but have not had buy in from organisations. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Media mentioned so let's go there...though acknowledging some answers have appeared.#diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3 Can media add to stigmas...actually, let's add some organisations too. It's broader than you think #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz From my experience w/ my mom & subsequent observations, I think people living w/ other dementias besides Alzheimer’s/amnestic type & their care partners need to be heard separately from Alzheimer’s or they won’t get supports that could facilitate their lives. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Perceptions matter and these can lead to stigmas and stereotypes. Think HIV related dementia. Images matter too and same in this context #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Adding to perceptions @TommyTommytee18 mentioning elderly people and dementia who are highlighted/profiled more so than people with young onset dementia #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Shout from rafters. Okay Question 4 is imagine courtesy @journeyofcareM #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @helenfindlay Rubbish we can come back to. Actually will work it into Question 4 so we can all muck in. Do you like that one @TommyTommytee18?! #diversealz humour matters and with stigmas.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 4: imagine you have reached the top (rafters!) what would you shout out(maybe to who) bearing in mind you wouldn’t take any rubbish. Politely speaking, what would you say or want? #Diversealz
S Olson, B.S, J.D. @ThatVDOVault @DiverseAlz @SamuelLJackson @BryanCranston Arg people living with a #dementia OTHER THAN Alzheimers...am so pissed off at excuse given by campaign of 'hey at least we are saying dementia is not due to old age' Yeah on behalf of people with #LBD #FTD #Vascular #CTE #ALS #MND #Parkinsons etc eff off. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @ThatVDOVault @SamuelLJackson @BryanCranston Ah...you've seen the Share the Orange Ads. Indeed yes, Alzheimer's is not the only form of dementia #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz So on today's chat, we roll up our sleeves, roll our fingers over the keyboards and dig in with opinons. @ThatVDOVault reminding us about the dementias. Suddenly thinking "my dementia is worse than yours" this as wondering if can bring more stigma. Here's question 5. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 5: do you think there could be (more) stigma around certain dementias? Course, one needs to know what they are but the word dementia causes "fear" (word often used in research) in many. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nchadborn:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay: @DiverseAlz Q4:
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz I say that a diagnosis of dementia does not erase me as a human being worthy of dignity with basic human rights accorded. I'd say I don't want to sequestered from society but remain a part of it, to the end. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz On rafters think would say be inclusive and don't do it because demography dictates and include disabilities more. Recognise that research carries stigmas too and address it especially among groups trying to engage. Finally, act and respect people who know. Fair?! #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz This
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @ClarissaGiebel Having spoken to many people with #dementia and families, it seems that specific rare dementias always experience stigma from within the dementia community, such as FTD #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Great point from @ClarissaGiebel that we often forget or perhaps don't want to acknowledge, stigma within dementia community itself around dementia types and one only has to think of society as a whole to get that. Thanks for highlighting CG #diversealz
S Olson, B.S, J.D. @ThatVDOVault THIS!!!
billshankly💙 @williamshankly RT @TommyTommytee18:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Indeed, whether we say or not, there will be issues around certain dementias and this is because of how they present. #diversealz. @TommyTommytee18 mentioned education earlier. Indeed. Argument though that one learns to adapt as best as can as time passes #diversealz
billshankly💙 @williamshankly RT @nchadborn:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz This @TommyTommytee18 RT There’s no chance of us getting to the top of the rafters, there’s to many people out there suppose to care for us only to willing to kick the ladder from beneath us everytime we try to get near the top #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 6: What are some of the consequences of stigma? Struck by @ThatVDOVault saying that it took years to figure out father's language. He lived with frotemporal dementia. #diversealz FTD
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 7 Who can breakdown the stigmas? Celebrities? #diversealz #justasking
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nchadborn:
Caroline @journeyofcareM @ClarissaGiebel @DiverseAlz There's the stigma too that has come from dementia meaning to the gen. public as Alzheimers when there are so many different types. My mum, though not officially diagnosed as to what type, vascular seems to be the cause. Yet the ALZ label has been used to slot her.#DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 Hello. We are talking about stigma and dementia and part of that is about being treated differently #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Mentioned by @nchadborn additional stigmas due to characteristics beyond dementia such as race, dialect, culture, gender...#diversealz. We have a question 8 on this
