Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good day wherever you are. #diversealz here to chat about whe they say...a bit more later!
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We’ve started with welcome. @ThatVDOVault we are chatting about when people say certain things, generally in the negative about why can’t be done. Inspired by @bradboyqld post who mentioned his mother walking etc when told, think, would never happen. Was perseverance.#diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz So, let's start with our icebreaker, please fill in sentence with regard with dementia, however you see fit, When you or one is told... #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Here is an example of our chat theme via @nursesKidONE When one is told MT of "the geriatrician attending on rounds says to her residents she recommends sending your mom home after hip surgery "because of the dementia." #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Welcome @ThatVDOVault @nursesKidONE. For anyone watching today's chat, all will become clear as we progress #diversealz. We are asking for you to fill in the blanks re: dementia When one is told...
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz A classic has to be When one is told...it is dementia and then, if you don't know much about it, the first thought is Alzheimer's as nobody tells you anything else #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Via @ThatVDOVault When they say...it is today #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Take it that "they" is impersonal...#diversealz as can apply to anyone.
C.Hazelwood. Author @richardmcoates RT @DiverseAlz: Via @ThatVDOVault When they say...it is today #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Hoping that our opening line When they say... isn't proving too difficult for folks to join in. One more minute and we'll start chat. Where is @journeyofcareM who has great turn of phrase among others! #diversealz @TommyTommytee18 @helenfindlay
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Let the chat begin #Diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz When one is told that your mother "can't use a knife and fork, read or write ", don't believe what is said ( or anything is said about anyone , for that matter ) until you witness it yourself. #DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1 courtesy @nursesKidONE tweet: How can one respond when told by a professional, for whatever reason, event or situation cut short because of a person's dementia? In this case, was discharge from hospital following hip surgery. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 1 in our eyes is about making assumptions. See earlier @ThatVDOVault tweet. However, also significant for a carer/care partner/care supporter #diversealz Your thoughts?
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz One of the underlying points of today's conversation is this via @journeyofcareM MT: don't believe what is said ( or anything is said about anyone , for that matter ) until you witness it yourself. #DiverseAlz Sure more examples will appear during chat

nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE "the facility was about to report...they had reached the limit of rehabilitation progress....would trigger her transition to a "private pay" patient, ending Medicare Part A coverage." #DiverseAlz When his elderly mother broke her hip, things didn’t go well https://t.co/A6zVlrUaMa
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz BTW it's Black History Month in the UK. When they say Black and minority ethnic groups are hard to reach. Given lack of news in this area via key organisations at this time, and stand to be corrected, by key organisations who also promote this... what can one say? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @Shedfieldlodge:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @Shedfieldlodge @ThatVDOVault Indeed and think answer given to @nursesKidONE just that and more #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz When they say...where is @TommyTommytee18 today! #diversealz
C.Hazelwood. Author @richardmcoates RT @DiverseAlz: When they say...where is @TommyTommytee18 today! #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @LynnGamble20:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Another sentence that sums up our chat today via @LynnGamble20 is about being "written off". #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Pleased to see everyone gets where this chat is going today. We have some great thoughts coming through so the questions will be fast and furious as don't want to lose some. Just ask you to pick and mix! #diversealz

Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz @ThatVDOVault The proof of the pudding (& taking comments about pwd with a grain of salt ) was my mother's miraculous change of state (couldn't use a knife /fork/climb stairs/incontinent etc) when she came home again. All miraculously disappeared. Lies can ruin lives .#DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 3 When they say "it's the dementia". Let's explore this. Some things to consider Who says it, what do you think are the reasons behind it, why and how one can respond #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Find phrase "it's the dementia" one of the most infuriating phrases sometimes as sometimes, it can be followed by, you know people with dementia can't do much as have been told but quickly corrected, assertively of course #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @LynnGamble20:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We have some good phrases already on #diversealz via @Shedfieldlodge bad practice ruins lives and @journeyofcareM lies ruin lives #dementia

C.Hazelwood. Author @richardmcoates RT @Shedfieldlodge:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Unpacking the phrase "it's the dementia" argue can be an easy way out for some and can also be stigmatising. Of course there are incidences (yes/no?) where this can be the case but again we go back to type of dementia and still everyone is different #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz @ThatVDOVault Is this asking for responses to being asked by a pwd ? Or responses to an interrogator testing a pwd ? BTW I had to ask for the date today at my municipality office. The young clerk had to check himself. But that said, whatever repetitive ? asked, answer sweetly .#DiverseAlz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Good point from @helenfindlay that by saying it's the dementia, other "underlying problems will be missed" and then we have situations where people will not see professionals because they expect to be told "it's the dementia" even though they know otherwise #diversealz

nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE From my experience, too many professionals inappropriately present themselves as experts in dementia when they aren't. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Anymore thoughts on the phrase "it's the dementia?". It might be the dementia for some things but look at what has been acheived with the supposedly cannot comments see @LynnGamble20 @journeyofcareM @Shedfieldlodge @bradboyqld on chat defying it #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @Shedfieldlodge:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Long Question 4 via @nchadborn how do you approach communicating with one person who’s telling you in detail something that you’ve got no idea about especially when you're in the company of others and want to switch the conversation without being rude? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @nursesKidONE: From my experience, too many professionals inappropriately present themselves as experts in dementia when they aren't. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE Redirection is also a good skill to employ when professionals and/or nonprofessionals begin to talk to you in front of and/or about your loved PLWD as if the PLWD isn't there. My mom very clearly understood the conversations when people thought she didn't. #PPA #diversealz
Carers Matter Norfolk @CarersMatterNfk RT @DiverseAlz: How can one cope with repetition re: How can one cope with repetition re: dementia? RT @Shedfieldlodge Answer the person. It may be repetitive to you but its not for them. Its the 1st time, everytime. #diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz @LynnGamble20 @Shedfieldlodge @bradboyqld But often only due to perseverance to prove otherwise. If a pwd dementia does not have someone to fight their corner for them, they are out of luck. #DiverseAlz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @DiverseAlz: We have some good phrases already on #diversealz via @Shedfieldlodge bad practice ruins lives and @journeyofcareM lies ruin lives #dementia
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Going to tweet question 5 as covers something mentioned by @helenfindlay and @nursesKidONE and is something many of us on chat should be interested in and might have encountered. Remember, we are picking and mixing on the questions! #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Question 5: How can one respond or what does one think when told "I am the expert..". We have spoken about dementia and expertise many times. #personcentredcare. #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @helenfindlay:
JOANNA 🐕🐈🐭🐁🐰🐴👮 @charitybegin4 RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Have seen situations where person with dementia is trying to communicate a message that is knocked back because of person who "knows better" and yet there were clues to suggest otherwise. #diversealz
Caroline @journeyofcareM @nursesKidONE @DiverseAlz But there are dementia experts everywhere, they just don't have accreditation. They are the zillions of carers worldwide. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @nchadborn @ThatVDOVault Liking story and repetition, depending on subject matter, might try to keep two conversations going. Otherwise, if know person or picked up on some keywords, might try to use that. Again, all depends on situation and who is around at time. However, if food/tea time... #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @Shedfieldlodge @helenfindlay @WendyinBCN @ThatVDOVault Communication is such a major issue in dementia across the board. Means everything from here. #diversealz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz However, after participating in chats for awhile, it seemed my experience w/ my mom differed in significant ways from other carers. I attribute it to her type of dementia not be accurately diagnosed; but, perhaps, there are significant differences w/in a type? #diversealz
C.Hazelwood. Author @richardmcoates RT @helenfindlay:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Our final question and then will continue to pick up on responses...what is your response to the generalisation When they say...you know people with dementia can't communicate #diversealz
C.Hazelwood. Author @richardmcoates RT @DiverseAlz: Via @TraceyShorty28 tweeting about menopause and adding not point going to the doctor about it as everything is attributed to her dementia #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz @Shedfieldlodge we have tweeted out a question about dementia and communciation and would be interested in your thoughts. It is the familiar...you know people with dementia can't communicate #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz See @mumbythesea is here. Welcome. And with this question RT would ask what exactly are they an expert in...usually confuses as they just don’t understand that they can’t be an expert in caring for a PLWD they hardly know...they need time #DiverseAlz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE @nchadborn @DiverseAlz @Shedfieldlodge Would there be a way for you to use patient confidentiality requirements to suggest that the details should be conveyed at a later time in a more appropriate setting? #diversealz
dan gaetano @dgaet59 @DiverseAlz Very narrow minded way to look at communications. My wife verbal skills are gone but she communicates with her emotions and facial expressions. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Do have a listen to this interesting Radio 4 feature: BBC Radio 4 - Word of Mouth, Communication and Dementia with Novelist/poet Michael Rosen: https://t.co/HinV1MqjlV #diversealz Covers much of what we have said and references research
Caroline @journeyofcareM @DiverseAlz I'm all with credit where credit is due but this is a case where I'd rather not have the credit. I don't think I did say unpack, but if so I'd probably said it with quotation marks. Unpacking is only what I do with groceries or luggage #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Before chat ends, we asked you to complete the sentence... .When they say... We say when they say smile, develop a sense of humour try and do it. Anyone disagree? Dementia is not a journey for the sour #Diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @Shedfieldlodge:
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz We do learn something new everyday as @Shedfieldlodge and beginning to realise with dementia, in some cases, we learn more by what is left unsaid and sometimes from those we hope would know more than we do #diversealz. Is that making sense?
C.Hazelwood. Author @richardmcoates RT @DiverseAlz: Via @LynnGamble20 We learn quickly though from experience #DiverseAlz Not the technicalities but the practical side
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz Going back to a question via @nchadborn about conversations and changing conversations, listening can be key, effective listening. That isn't meant to be patronising. Finding more and more that this can reap dividends #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz RT @dgaet59: @DiverseAlz Very narrow minded way to look at communications. My wife verbal skills are gone but she communicates with her emotions and facial expressions. #diversealz

S Olson, B.S, J.D. @ThatVDOVault @nchadborn @DiverseAlz Oh okay. I thought it was a 1 on 1 discussion. It is always harder to chat in groups, especially where 1 or more people have #dementia. #DiverseAlz |
