A1: I recommend that, whenever possible, a patient facing a new cancer diagnosis have at least one trusted person with them at the first appointment, so they have extra ears & a note-taker. #gyncsm

@gyncsm T1 Very difficult discussion. You have to “hold it together” & definitely know what you want to say. Important to share with family. It’s their medical history too. #gyncsm

A1: Ultimately, it is your decision to share how little or as much as you would like. People generally mean well but may not know how to process the unexpected nature of a cancer diagnosis. It is important to know it's your story to share & no one can take that from you. #GYNCSM

t1: All of the important ppl were in the know from Day 1. Word started to travel fast around town as my kids were still in elementary school so I put out a “statement” on FB for World Ovarian Cancer Day & outted myself. Made me feel like I had some control. #gyncsm

A1: It is likely that you will have some shock. Ideally, you will have at least one key support person who can help you hold space and sort out the “who needs to know what” logistics. If not, there are always professional helpers. #gyncsm

A2: Everyone processes things differently. It's easy to take things personally, however, their response may have nothing to do w/you. If you find it too difficult w/certain people, limit your interactions/information shared. Talk to a therapist to help with processing too.#GYNCSM

T1 I was teaching in a boys high school when I was diagnosed. I was not able to return to school in September. I told the admins first and then I wrote an article for the school newspaper about why I wasn't going to be there. The students and parents were very supportive #gyncsm

I love that card about "When life gives you lemons, I will not tell you about my friend that died of lemons". Others often don't know what to say and go in weird and hurtful directions. #gyncsm
