Dee Sparacio @womenofteal @teaminspire Hi there John! Hope you are doing well. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 T1: A sign of good health care communication is when I get home from an appointment and feel clearer on things and have some action items. A sign of poor communication is when I am more confused. #gyncsm
Shereese Maynard, MS; MBA 😷 She/Her @ShereeseMayMba T1 Good communication means multi-discipline coordination, collaboration, and decision making to include the patient, innovation, and caregivers. #gyncsm

Dee Sparacio @womenofteal T1 For me it is when I feel my team knows who I am , responds to my questions and is willing to explains reasons for treating or not treating an issue I may have. And doesn't make me wait to hear results. #gyncsm

Dee Sparacio @womenofteal @GlobalRadOnc Welcome - So glad you are with us tonight! #gyncsm
Dee Sparacio @womenofteal Oh coordination . So important. Wish those EMRs communicated with each other. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 T1: Good communication definitely includes knowing how to follow up and also having agreed upon how results will be shared. I have a doc I like but waiting too long for MRI results impacts my ability to function. #gyncsm
GYN Cancer | #GYNCSM @gyncsm T2a: How has communicating with your team changed during your cancer experience? #gyncsm
Gabri.El Vid.Al @VidalRadOnc Good evening folks! #radonc resident. Here to learn from tonight’s discussion. #gyncsm
Kathleen Ackert, DO @AckertKathleen @gyncsm From physician perspective, overall goals are explained at a patient centered level, daily goals are discussed with nursing staff, residents have clear idea of plan, and most important the patient feels heard and at the center of it all #gyncsm

Michele E. Collins @Michele_w_1_L t2: It’s been less frequent. I recently transitioned to the Nurse Practitioner. Feeling a little disconnected. Grateful to be where I am though. #gyncsm
Nita Lee @NitaKarnikLee This is an important goal for us to keep in mind! #gyncsm T1 @btrfly12 thanks for this insight!
Dee Sparacio @womenofteal T2 A I learned to not be shy and speak up and ask for things and that helped my team know what I needed help with. #gyncsm
Meredith GTrinidad, MD @DrMeredithGT T1: Good communication involves not just listening but also taking nonverbal cues from patients during the conversation. It's also very important for patients to feel comfortable asking questions to their attending and go home with a clear understanding of the situation. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 T2: Despite being a pretty "empower patient", it took a while after learning of my genetic mutation before I felt like I was getting more active in my care and appointments vs. just trying to take it in and listen. #gyncsm
Gabri.El Vid.Al @VidalRadOnc @womenofteal Thank you! A dear friend of mine was recently diagnosed with recurrent endometrial CA. Here to learn from you all on how to best support her through this new chapter of our friendship. #gyncsm

Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad T1 COVID has added such a layer of complexity to good communication! Everyone is so stretched when you call it's hard to get to the right person and if someone calls back you're repeating your story over and over or clearing up misunderstandings. #gyncsm
Cancer Hope Network @CancerHopeNet An ongoing conversation where both parties feel respected, where patients are comfortable asking questions and making suggestions.

Dee Sparacio @womenofteal RT @temkins: And that patients come to appointments with questions and don't keep their fears or concerns to themselves. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 T2: I think at first you don't know what questions to ask. I think that is when hearing from your doctor about patient organizations and peer support might best help. Many have a "list of questions" and FAQs. Getting that info early can help guide what to ask dr. #gyncsm

Sarah Cassidy @CassidyFish2 Our @CancerHopeNet survivors often tell me that it's critical they're communicating WITH their team, not just being dictated to (intentionally or unintentionally). Respect for personalities, beliefs and cultures is critical. #gyncsm

Cancer Girl @cancergirl730 @btrfly12 T2. I can't get telehealth appts because I'm a T1D - which also makes me high risk. So stupid, but I have to go in Every. Single. Time. #GynCSM

Dee Sparacio @womenofteal T2b I am not in active treatment so I only see my gyn onc once per year. But my communication with my dermatologist was harder and appt was postponed for 6 months. #gyncsm

Sarah Cassidy @CassidyFish2 @ShereeseMayMba And even as a pro in this field, there are landmines. And it's somehow different when it's personal. (Glad your experience has been so psoitive!) #gyncsm

Dee Sparacio @womenofteal T3 At initial dx and at recurrence, I was offered a clinical trial by my gyn onc. I chose to enroll in one on initial dx and turned down the other. I wonder if being treated at an NCI center / Academic/ research center made my experience different than others. #gyncsm
Meredith GTrinidad, MD @DrMeredithGT T2b: I think that telemedicine now plays a bigger role in patient consultations, but where I come from it's not readily accessible to all. And now, you have to be extra observant with patients' eye expressions since that's all you can see. 😅 #gyncsm
Cancer Hope Network @CancerHopeNet Our #survivor and #caregiver volunteers can help provide that peer support. #gyncsm

Debra Hallisey @advocatemomdad RT @Michele_w_1_L: t4: t4: to improve communication I would recommend that there is frequent communication between the gyn onc & med onc. I would recommend that doctors not be intimidated by patients who like to ask questions. #gyncsm
Dee Sparacio @womenofteal T4 And health care team members ask at the end if the patient / caregiver has any questions or what they should do if they have a question after they leave. #gyncsm
Cancer Hope Network @CancerHopeNet RT @gyncsm: For those just joining, we're on Topic 4 - sharing what could make communication better on all sides :) #gyncsm
Meredith GTrinidad, MD @DrMeredithGT T4: I think spacing out appointments has helped me give enough time for each patient consult so that I can still answer questions. I also tell my patients to list down things they forgot to ask and tell me on the next visit. #gyncsm
Sarah Temkin @temkins Agree! If your doctor works for a hospital they are unlikely to have control over this. 🤯 Let the hospital system, patient care representative know. #gyncsm.
Dee Sparacio @womenofteal Excellent advice for the patient. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 T4: I think framing the appointment around the patient's goals is always a good start. Helping patients define those and really understanding how those goals impact treatment decisions and needs. #gyncsm
Cancer Hope Network @CancerHopeNet @DrMeredithGT What a thoughtful, practical way to meet their needs - and to demonstrate your openness. #gyncsm

GYN Cancer | #GYNCSM @gyncsm T5: What is the best advice you have received to communicate your need for support - emotional or physical - with your health care team? #gyncsm

Azeen Sadeghian, MD, FAAD @SkinChickMD RT @ShereeseMayMba: T1 Good communication means multi-discipline coordination, collaboration, and decision making to include the patient, innovation, and caregivers. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 T5: I really appreciate those practices that make mental wellness and other topics a part of the routine - like a mental health checklist as part of intake. So much for all to remember. Having prompts as part of process I think helps get to those quality of life items. #gyncsm
Meredith GTrinidad, MD @DrMeredithGT T4: Also, I appreciate it when patients ask me about what they find on Google rather than acting on these info directly and possibly getting into harm's way. More and more patients are on the Internet and doctors should be prepared to handle these "external" info. #gyncsm
Christina Lizaso @btrfly12 #gyncsm :

Dee Sparacio @womenofteal T5: Keep a notebook and write down questions in between appointments so you don't forget them. Ask who is on your team and write their info. My little notebook was filled by the time I finished 9 cycles. Ask for copies of all test results. which could lead to more ?'s. #gyncsm

Meredith GTrinidad, MD @DrMeredithGT @CancerHopeNet It's equally fulfilling to have patients leave the clinic saying they appreciated the discussion & understood. Always hard to discuss cancer, but when I think of how much harder it is for patients to listen about that cancer, the least I can do is to help them process it. #gyncsm
