T1: I see the term "cancer myth" as a widely held belief about cancer. It could be true, false, misleading or anywhere along the spectrum. For me, it is a vague idea that I haven't really looked into the facts of. #gyncsm

Clinicians sometimes inadvertently propagate these myths by trying to provide information or a guide for managing cancer. But these are averages or norms and certainly everyone who has touched enough cancer patients knows that there are exceptions to every rule.... #gyncsm

T2: Thinking back on my dad's cancer, I remember people talking about this idea that once you have surgery and expose it to air, you've allowed the cancer to spread and the end comes more quickly. #gyncsm

T2 Growing up I remember hearing relatives say you shouldn't get surgery for cancer because when you do the air will cause the cancer to spread. #gyncsm

I think “cancer = death sentence” is a belief/response that can be important to unpack and surround w/the individual facts at hand. Some cancers do have little progress - others certainly not as much as we would like - but there are ways to provide hope along w/info #gyncsm

T1. People hear that #leiomyosarcoma (and other subtypes of sarcoma) are "chemo resistant" and think that means chemo will never work. (Joining late. I'm a longtime LMS survivor.) #gyncsm

@btrfly12 @Michele_w_1_L Unfortunately there a cognitive biases that may interfere with making the diagnosis; or sometimes it's to try to reassure a patient. I'm sure much of the time that statement ends up correct, but it is really a problem when the uncommon diagnoses end up happening #gyncsm

T2. I don't know if this qualifies as a myth, but some #sarcoma patients repeat the idea that surgery -- the gold standard -- should always be the first treatment tried. But pre-op radiation & drugs may make surgery less debilitating. #gyncsm

T3 - the top myth to me is - People who have cancer shouldn't eat sugar, since sugar makes cancer to grow faster. All cells, including cancer cells, depend on blood sugar (glucose) for energy. Giving more sugar to cancer cells doesn't make them grow faster. #gyncsm

For my genetic mutation the only real group is on FB so that is where I go. In general, FB tends to have less moderated groups. #gyncsm
