@thestreetgazer Love the topic @thestreetgazer ! #healthxph

T1: In my recent experience of being hospitalized, I most appreciated the doctor outlining the process of tests they were taking in order to diagnose the problem. It relieved the stress I have of nurses suddenly giving me pills and CBCs without warrant. #HealthXPh

@raymondnaguit @Youth4MH Hi RJ! Welcome! :) useful points to get you started...very useful in your near future! 👍🏼 #healthxph
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@jimlopez875 Fire away! Still getting used to the 240, but if you really think about it, it still is pretty much capsulized. #healthxph
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
T1 Words are powerful, and it is important to know how a person interprets his illness, we basically need to be careful with how we explain and the kind of information we give. #healthxph
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
T1. Most of the time, the patient teaching experience is good and ends up well. Sometimes, its mutually difficult but tgat is part of the learning experience #HealthXPh
Jim Katzaman - Get Debt-Free One Family at a Time @JKatzaman
T1 From the patient end, I'm fortunate to have had doctors who are plan spoken and willing to talk about any issue and answer any questions. #HealthXPh

RT @thestreetgazer: Let’s get the tweetchat going! 🌞 T1: Let’s get the tweetchat going! 🌞 T1: What are your experiences with patient education, both as the attending physician and as a patient?#healthxph
Dr. Gia Sison @giasison
@thestreetgazer Hi Steph! Hi from Bacolod! #healthxph
Rich and Friends @richxfriends
@jimlopez875 I think its most empowering for young adults learning to manage their health records. As we grow up, we adopt the "leave it to the adults" attitude, without realizing we need to be educated patients. When physicians respond respectfully though, we have more confidence #HealthxPh
Bea @Bipolar_Bea_r
T1: It's been good. For my bipolar disorder, I did so much research about me that my pdoc didn't need to explain so much. It's nice to know cuz I feel more in control of my disorder. #HealthXPH
Dr. Gia Sison @giasison
Just the way it should be #healthxph https://t.co/usn05mCY9y

@giasison Hi Doc Gia! :-) Having fun there, I bet! :-) #healthxph
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
T1. some patients are afraid to ask questions from their doctor. sometimes they have the impression that the doctor might get angry if they ask too many questions. #healthxph
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@YourMDSays Thanks for your insight, I think education helps everyone get better treatment outcomes. #healthxph
Bea @Bipolar_Bea_r
Sometimes I worry about my meds' side-effects because of all the things I've read in internet like WebMD, but It's nice to have a pdoc/doc who can calm you down #Healthxph
Chuck Webster MD, MS AI, MS Systems Engineering @wareFLO
Here! Sorry late, but haven’t updated weekly alarm due to time change... #healthxph https://t.co/MEVF5xbPaM
Bea @Bipolar_Bea_r
For my mom who's a doc, she becomes bothered when a family doesn't want her patient to know that they're dying or have cancer. She believes they have a right to know so they can prepare to die. #Healthxph How shall a doc handle this?
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
@jimlopez875 hi doc Gia, Jim, Steph. Just heard our school, Univ of Cebu School of Medicine did well in the quiz bee. #healthxph just got back from dialysis
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
T1. Whatever the experience is, both physician, patient understand their shared role in the process. Teaching-learning bet two often verbalises concerns #HealthXPH
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
Great input, everyone! As a connecting question, T2 up next! T2: What methods do you employ (or have experienced) as a physician (or patient) to educate your patients in clinical practice? #Healthxph
Chuck Webster MD, MS AI, MS Systems Engineering @wareFLO
Mostly lurking tho (what else is new!) Nonetheless, always enjoy scrolling thru the weekly #healthxph tweets. What an intelligent and friendly group you are! https://t.co/xlKw1PK9i9
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@wareFLO Hi Chuck! :-) Just dive right in, there's always room for more ideas! :-) #healthxph
Rich and Friends @richxfriends
@bonedoc I've met some physicians who are very defensive and fixated of their diagnosis and they were awkward experiences. The handling of questions towards patients also seem to reveal the doctor's expertise and credibility of their specialization #HealthXPh
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@cebumd @jimlopez875 Hi Doc! :-) Congratulations to your school! Woohoo!! And good to see you here after dialysis too! :-) #healthxph
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
for MDs to just provide informations is not enough. Recommendations should be laid out. Thats where our expertise have taught us #HealthXPH https://t.co/U1ANP96FoJ
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@thestreetgazer #healthxph I can't join for long. We're getting ready a party for the Seniors today
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
T2: A very good method, I agree. A person would always be more comfortable if he is made to give his own opinions. It is a partnership, after all. #healthxph https://t.co/F3kYGdD1O4
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
Being a patient with medical background, my nephrologist cites journals when educating about some medicines prescribed to me. must be because he knows i am into research. haha. #healthxph
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@bonedoc #healthxph A times to much information dumped at a patient one time can be very confusing to some, especially the Seniors.
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
@YinkaVidal @thestreetgazer enjoy your party Yinka #healthxph
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@YinkaVidal Hi Yinka! Good to see you could drop by. Your thoughts are always appreciated, especially in this topic of patient education. Would love to hear them! Happy partying! #healthxph

RT @YinkaVidal: @bonedoc #healthxph A times to much information dumped at a patient one time can be very confusing to some, especially the Seniors.
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
I know its difficult. But thats the way to go. Refer to MDs more knowledgeable than you are. Even when I do, I still do the teaching part #HealthXPH https://t.co/tuieUdUJYX
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@thestreetgazer #healthxph I wish I can say this is the way it is in the U.S. A partnership between patient and MD?
Rich and Friends @richxfriends
@jimlopez875 @bonedoc ^I also find it more humbling if the doctor were to refer to other more knowledgeable professionals and ensure that their patients receive the appropriate care #HealthXPH
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@cebumd Impressive! Now that's what I call a partnership! :-) #healthxph

Jim Katzaman - Get Debt-Free One Family at a Time @JKatzaman
T2 Our doctor, through Johns Hopkins, now has MyChart, an online site where we can long in to see test results, prescriptions, meds due, set appointments, request referrals, exchange email with doctors. It's all open and secure. #HealthXPh
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
Agree. If you’re not giving your recommendations as an MD when it is required of you, you’re not doing your job #healthxph https://t.co/Sf5gPeQDKl
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@thestreetgazer #healthxph We are presently seeing another issue in the US where intentionally false diagnosis & treatment to increase revenue
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@jimlopez875 @bonedoc #healthxph Thanks! Jim.
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
T2 I think Visual aids and short powerpoints (3-5 slides) would be helpful in helping the patient visualize. In therapy, I would often clarify what they understood, encourage questions. #Healthxph
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
well, in medicine. There’s only one thing Im pretty sure of- things that aren’t in my area of expertise! #HealthXPH https://t.co/Qg4gecU8DB
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@YinkaVidal It is the ideal situation. Coming up with a plan that both of them could work with. Expectation setting and working towards goals...as closely approximated as possible. :-) We have limits here too. #healthxph
Bea @Bipolar_Bea_r
#healthxph My pdoc would tell me to write a reflection paper/homework so that she knows if I understood what she said when she says something complicated or something I don't want to hear. It helps us get through difficult topics.
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
Other doctors of mine, a surgeon and a radiologist, uses models and illustrations when explaining findings or procedures #healthxph
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@bonedoc #healthxph I remember discussing certain health issues with my older brother in 1998. He got scared & warned me about discussing med issues.
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
l have so many experiences as a patient regarding this. Another uses charts and tables especially when it comes to nutrition #healthxph
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@thestreetgazer #healthxph Steph, I agree partnership it is a wonderful situation, but in US. the MD still reigns and MD centered care, not patient centered care.

T2: In order to educate myself, I usually refer to my nurse mother and doctor uncle. However, when they are busy, I resort to online articles and forums, which can be a source of both assurance and anxiety. Doctors have the most credibility input about the sickness #HealthXPh

i think some physicians should be aware that sometimes their educational points at times become too technical sounding that the patient will just nod without really understanding. #healthxph
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
thus a feedback loop is needed. For us surgeons, a return demo is always part of patient care teaching #HealthXPH https://t.co/fVjZ3txv6H
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@thestreetgazer #healthxph T3 Many medical Journals are free online. Watch out for fake news though.
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
T3 As a physician, I would ask my patients at the end if they wanted something to be clarified, or if they had any questions whatsoever. It also helps if I do a little "review" of the things that need to be done, what they understood about it. #healthxph
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
it would be best to have efforts toward making explanations understandable to the lay person/patient. this requires time though. #healthxph
Jim Katzaman - Get Debt-Free One Family at a Time @JKatzaman
T3 Have an online repository of information. Patients will search and trust information on the internet anyway. This would align with their instincts while assuring info is verified and not urban legend. #HealthXPh
Bea @Bipolar_Bea_r
T3: I would recommend homework and writing things down for the patient like me, kind of like taking notes in class, cuz I hardly remember what pdoc and I talk about during sessions. #healthxph
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@jimlopez875 @Bipolar_Bea_r @thestreetgazer #healthxph Jim, the challenge is how will a patient able to tell fake medical news from real medical information?
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
@bonedoc very much agree #healthxph
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@jimlopez875 This is a good idea! More sensate stimulation leads to better recall! #healthxph
Narciso Tapia MHPEd @cebumd
it is best to let patient repeat what you have said in his own words to ensure patient really understands your explanation or instruction #healthxph
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@Bipolar_Bea_r Yes, good point! Note-taking (even on phones) is very common. If it helps, it is highly encouraged! #healthxph

T3. Be sensitive to a host of patient factors that might affect receptiveness to health teaching. The challenge is employing a mix of educational tools but is adjusted to the patient’s uniqueness #HealthXPH
Rev. Victor 'Yinka Vidal @YinkaVidal
@jimlopez875 @Bipolar_Bea_r @thestreetgazer #healthxph An open door should allow the patient to call the physician in case clarification is needed.
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
T3 After the initial information intake, I often talk to the family members accompanying the individual. Their understanding of the patient's case will matter very much in getting favorable treatment outcomes and remission. Families are powerful!#Healthxph
Remo Aguilar @bonedoc
more importantly, focus on education that leads to better treatment #HealthXPH https://t.co/rGS5odCg6V

@bonedoc #healthxph Agree! Can't use computer info for a Senior that has no computer or cellphone.
Stephanie Miaco, M.D. @StephMiaco
@YinkaVidal @jimlopez875 @Bipolar_Bea_r I give them a number they can send SMS to, or call if they have any questions. Emailing is also useful. #healthxph

Mental Health issues carry a lot of stigma, and the informed and empowered patient (with his educated and supportive family) can accomplish a whole lot more than what is usually expected. They get their lives back. I've seen it happen everyday. Worth the effort, always.#healthxph
Rich and Friends @richxfriends
@thestreetgazer I think that the line between respecting the patients needs and reducing the patients concerns is a small one. Both the patient and physician should actively work towards having a better understanding of the diagnosis with respect for each other #HealthXPH
