Annie Massart @Annie_Massart_
@JHospMedicine T1: Lack of training on how to be a teacher can be a huge barrier. The change from being a senior resident to a new attending is already a challenging transition. Learning how to effectively teach others can be really difficult if no one has shown you how. #JHMChat
Jen Readlynn, MD, FHM (she/her) @jenreadlynn
@JHospMedicine A1: Impostor syndrome. Still trying to figure out a new(ish) role while leading a team is very intimidating. Especially when you are an attending at the place you trained. I found it hard to feel like I was respected by some of the residents who knew me. #JHMchat

Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@JHospMedicine A1. A whole host! Did I do enuf billing/coding? Did I teach enough? Did I give them enuf autonomy? Did I give them TOO much autonomy? Why didn't i see that coming? Should I have pushed for things to happen faster so the pts be in the hosp for another day? #JHMchat

@jenreadlynn @JHospMedicine My friend and peds hospitalists @NicolaOrlov told an amazing story about how imposter syndrome affects patient care as a junior female attending #JHMChat
Michelle Brooks, MD, SFHM @michellebr00ks
@JHospMedicine A1: I also struggled with adapting to different teams/learners. I assumed I was just going to teach the way I had been taught and learners would just adapt to me. #JHMChat https://t.co/xSp466F0uY
Jon Lim, MD 🏳️‍🌈 @JonLimMD
A1: As a young attending, looking forward to getting a head start and learning all the secrets tonight! I find the cognitive loading of figuring out what's going on with the patient while also figuring out "what's going on" w/ the learner of many different levels hard! #JHMChat
Annie Massart @Annie_Massart_
@jenreadlynn @JHospMedicine I couldn't agree more. AHA was so helpful. I also made a point to observe as many teaching attendings as possible so I could learn their magic. But 6 years in, it still feels like an evolving learning curve with each teaching block. #JHMChat

@ShreyaTrivediMD @JHospMedicine I use “attending points” to keep track of my success and share w @jeannemfarnan and other female attendings. It helps you overcome and say “once when I felt like this I did that and I turned out to be right” #jhmchat
Journal of Hospital Medicine @JHospMedicine
Great questions being posed in tonight's #JHMChat... join in the conversation if you're a teaching young attending!
Michelle Brooks, MD, SFHM @michellebr00ks
@jenreadlynn @JHospMedicine I actually have this conversation at the get go...I tell my team I won’t always be right - I feel like I don’t have to be right all the time. We do a lot of @nejmkplus questions, so I get to role model humility a lot. #JHMChat
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@rav7ks @JHospMedicine Exactly its like this whole other 'performance act' to be good for your team or impress your team - almost feels like med school again #JHMchat
Mark Shapiro, MD @ETSshow
@bmcgillen26 @JHospMedicine @michellebr00ks I struggled with this as a resident. Full credit to all of you for acknowledging and moving past that barrier #JHMChat
Society of Hospital Medicine @SocietyHospMed
@Annie_Massart_ @jenreadlynn @JHospMedicine Annie! Welcome back to another #JHMchat :) Always thrilled to see you here!
Anika Kumar, MD (she/her) @freckledpedidoc
@JHospMedicine A1. I think for young pediatric attendings there is a huge concern related to patient safety. And that concern often impedes teaching and autonomy. #jhmchat
Marty Fried, MD @Marty_Fried
Small point but figuring out how much/how little to document has been a major work in progress for me as newbs attending. #JHMChat
Sherine Salib @DrSherineSalib
@SocietyHospMed T1. Balancing competing priorities seems to be a common barrier for effective teaching in the hospital setting... It’s not easy getting rounds done on time, teaching, doing multi-disciplinary huddles & discharging by noon!! #JHMChat
Sanjay A. Patel, MD (he/him/his) @buckeye_sanjay

Ernest Fischer, MD @EAFischer
@JHospMedicine A1. Everything up to this point has had rigid structure. Meds school = study , test, repeat. Residency ward, icu, clinic, off. Attending = thrown out of a moving van #JHMchat
Melissa Plesac @MelissaPlesacMD
@FutureDocs @ShreyaTrivediMD @JHospMedicine @jeannemfarnan I love the idea of an attending buddy system of sorts! Sharing the wins and the tough times with someone you trust can be so helpful #jhmchat
Jen Readlynn, MD, FHM (she/her) @jenreadlynn
@Marty_Fried I way over-document. But at the end of the day, it helps me get my thoughts together and feel comfortable that I covered what needs to be covered. #JHMchat
Jon Lim, MD 🏳️‍🌈 @JonLimMD
@FutureDocs @ShreyaTrivediMD @JHospMedicine @jeannemfarnan I really like this because I mostly feel okay admitting when I don't know something or need to ask for help/consult. But I worry about needing to project support, make sure learners feel safe taking care of patients with complexity, uncertainty, changing clinical course #JHMChat

Michelle Brooks, MD, SFHM @michellebr00ks
@DrSherineSalib @ShreyaTrivediMD @JHospMedicine Me too! Just tweaked some more the past 2 weeks I was on service. Will probably tweak again next week. Always adapting to the learners and their needs. #JHMChat
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@JHospMedicine @DxRxEdu A2. I do spend time talking about their wellness goals in or outside the hospital and how I can support them in that I write it down and make sure to check in at least 1 or 2 times during the week #JHMChat
Annie Massart @Annie_Massart_
@JHospMedicine @DxRxEdu T2. Our teaching teams are on geographic units. We used to hold a monthly meet & greet for the unit to meet the new trainees. We recently did away with that so I've tried starting the month w/ an ice breaker as part of our initial meeting. Ice breakers and baked goods. #JHMChat

Sherine Salib @DrSherineSalib
@ShreyaTrivediMD @JHospMedicine It keeps me on my toes, and honestly, it’s a lot more fun to just keep experimenting with what works best ... I tell my learners that during orientation... we figure out together what works best for the team I vary my rounding style a bit with each team.. #JHMChat
Charlie M. Wray, DO, MS @WrayCharles
Just talk to them (not like subordinates or children, etc) but as colleagues and individuals. Honestly, just getting to know the learners is probably one of my favorite parts of being a teaching attending #JHMChat

@MelissaPlesacMD Many wants to table/card flip rounds, but maybe im not doing a good enough "sell" for why bedside is great and trying to make the experience of bedside feel more valuable? Try to split rounds and see patients on my own as my version of flexibility... #JHMChat
Brian McGillen, MD @BMcGillenMD
@JHospMedicine @DxRxEdu A2. I typically send an expectation email asking for their goals (one always a wellness goal) before each clinical block together. I use those goals to generate small talk as we move from room to room on rounds. Try to work through everyone individually each day. #JHMChat

@JHospMedicine @DxRxEdu The quote that opened the article said it best - "No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
