@edielovesmath @UnderstoodOrg Terrific, @edielovesmath. Many good friends in the DC Area. I hope I can add value to your thinking. #LDchat

Let's get started! We'll use a Q1, Q2… format for questions. Please use the A1, A2… format for answers. Here's the first question… #LDchat
Understood @UnderstoodOrg
Q1. What should a student with #LD or #ADHD look for when choosing a college? #LDchat https://t.co/SzcUFh1gcu
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A1. (1/2) An #LD or #ADHD student should look for two things upon researching a college. First, what does the school have in terms of support in place. How many staff members and what kind of support. #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A1. (2/2) Second, and most importantly, students should ask the school for other students - two or three - who might have similar learning differences. #LDchat

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing a college, here’s how you can help your child with #LD or #ADHD weigh the options. https://t.co/WhHiJvRR7b #LDchat
Edie Brown @edielovesmath
@UnderstoodOrg Only 40% of college students with ADHD say that they were offered enough accommodations. Keep in mind, they are responsible for their own services. The college is not required to ask. #LDchat

Understood @UnderstoodOrg
What are the pros and cons of students disclosing their #LD or #ADHD on a college application? #LDchat https://t.co/e3SzJkvu92
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
@edielovesmath @UnderstoodOrg Even at my daughter's college, which has been quite accommodating, it has still been a struggle. #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A2. (1/2) Great question: The most important thing are two-fold. One: Students should not pretend to be something they are not. Two: Students need to disclose so that they can get the support they need and are entitled to. #LDchat
sumnersgators @sumnersgators1
@edielovesmath @UnderstoodOrg That’s a great point. It’s important that students learn to advocate for themselves and their needs. This starts even at the elm level! #edu5213SBU #LDchat

Whether it’s on an application or to a professor, here are some factors to consider about disclosing #LD or #ADHD. https://t.co/xjTXQIdtNY #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A2. (2/2) Without disclosing, colleges will not understand how a student has self-advocated or persevered. #LDchat

@UnderstoodOrg #LDChat seek at least one person who will be a close ally. There are often specific people & supports you won't know about (but yes, also look closely over the college info!) or might not be specific for #LD but will help.
sumnersgators @sumnersgators1
@UnderstoodOrg Students should consider the type of learner they are and ask about what accommodations the university is willing to offer. #edu5213SBU #LDchat

Understood @UnderstoodOrg
What supports and services are available to students with #LD or #ADHD in college, and how do they get them? #LDchat https://t.co/aeIiSbYmWi
Tara Buehler @blersbrainiacs
@sumnersgators1 @edielovesmath @UnderstoodOrg I agree! I teach at the elementary level and I think it is so important that students in my 5th grade class learn to self-advocate! #edu5213SBU #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
@Magdalenna2629 Right on! That should be the first thing, if colleges have the resources and support available. #LDchat

@SpTeacherJames Students think they will not be accepted to a school if they disclose their #LD or #ADHD. If they are not accepted, it may not be the right school for them. #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A3. (1/3) It depends on the college or university. There tends to be quite a variety of support. Thanks to great resources like https://t.co/vgnRQGc42u, ALL schools now have help and a thriving community of experts. #LDchat

@UnderstoodOrg A2. 5% of college students with ADHD graduate. There ways to turn things around. Practice skills in Transition IEP goals. Unfortunately, they are less likely to feel confident in being successful. Emotional and psychological challenges result in greater intrinsic power. #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A3. (2/3) From Whitman College, where my daughter attends, to Stanford University, which is the hardest school to get into in the US, just about every school has a student support center for students who might need learning help. #LDchat

Tara Buehler @blersbrainiacs
@SpTeacherJames I feel like while it may not be a con, unfortunately there is sometimes a stigma that comes with disclosing that information. Students don't want to be judged based on their abilities. #edu5213SBU #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A3. (3/3) Remember, some students don’t hit a wall until they get to college. So, colleges have advisors. Talk to one of the deans or advisors upon application, acceptances, or arrival at the school. #LDchat

@UnderstoodOrg It makes me wonder what changes need to happen at the secondary level to prepare our students? #edu5213SBU #LDchat

Q4. What can families and teachers do to help prepare young adults for the transition of college? #LDchat https://t.co/gHQzLenxba
Edie Brown @edielovesmath
@brianwthomas @UnderstoodOrg A3 My older students must take charge. I encourage parents to step back. #ldchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
@sumnersgators1 @UnderstoodOrg Very true. Better college guidance for sure. #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
A4. Families and teachers can let their children and students know that they will be okay. It’s about confidence & asking for help. What got the student into college will be the same strengths that will sustain them throughout. Gain skills, ask for help, gain confidence. #LDchat

@brianwthomas Thanks Brian -- do you have recs for online learners? do you think this is a good otion for LD? #ldchat thanks

@brianwthomas yes if they can get one-on-one I think many college s's can be overwhelmed by the crowds...#ldchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
@mathconfidence @SpTeacherJames My daughter's psych teacher did pull her in because she saw that she knew more than she was able to put down on paper. That helped her grade and confidence. #LDchat
Robin Schwartz @mathconfidence
@brianwthomas in HS there are many eyes on your young adult -- like 10 or 12 pairs or more a day -- in college there can be zero esp if they go away -- you have no idea if they even go to classes!! #ldchat
Robin Schwartz @mathconfidence
@SpTeacherJames @brianwthomas yes we are not allowed to modify :( it would be amazing if we had oral exams as so many students can explain with words and inflection and body language that doesn't translate to the page #ldchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
@mathconfidence So true. What I have found is that students who are used to asking for help and support do continue on in college. They need to know that help and support is a right, especially when accepted. #LDchat
Brian Thomas @brianwthomas
I would be curious to hear of exceptional or state of the art support for students in college. I do think that Whitman has great services for a non-LD college or university. #LDchat
