Dr Lynne Goodacre 💙 @LynneGoodacre
Hi everyone hope your day has gone well. It's @LynneGoodacre on the #Otalk account tonight with @naomi_gallant leading the talk on using mixed methods in research. Lets take a minute to shout out - who's joining us tonight?
Dr Lynne Goodacre 💙 @LynneGoodacre
couple of things to remember - don't forget to include #OTalk in your tweets otherwise we won't see your words of wisdom. Also please remember professional codes of conduct apply online as well. Be nice to each other people
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
Hello @LynneGoodacre and @naomi_gallant, I’m here and looking forward to tonight’s #OTalk.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Hello peeps! #otalk https://t.co/ua0CfjFhOS
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@LynneGoodacre me with my lunch as always! #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Ok so I’m on the right account now! Hi @preston_jennygreat to have you. Anyone joining in? #Otalk
Alex Smith @YmchwilStroc
@LynneGoodacre @naomi_gallant Hey 👋@LynneGoodacre @naomi_gallant #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Shall we make a start @naomi_gallant people will join in as we go along #Otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Here’s the 1st question for people just joining us #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant I have learned about mixed methods while I was in school. I have been reading quite a bit of OT conference posters using mixed methods design over the years. #otalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@naomi_gallant I recall much discussion about my PhD and whether it was a mixed methods design or not. In the end we agreed it was two separate methodologies. I see this quite a lot and would be keen to see/hear mixed methods worked in practice @LynneGoodacre @naomi_gallant #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
I’ve supervised people using mixed methods for MSc and PhD #Otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT

This will be an interesting one to unpick tonight #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @emmaspellmanOT: @OTalk_ Q1:
#OTalk @OTalk_
Slow system I think @emmaspellmanOT. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @naomi_gallant:
Alex Smith @YmchwilStroc
@preston_jenny @naomi_gallant @LynneGoodacre Very much agree, what counts as a ‘mixed methods’ design is an interesting question #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
For those just joining here is Q1 #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant I concur. The interplay between qualitative and quantitative data is key. #otalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@naomi_gallant That makes perfect sense @naomi_gallant @LynneGoodacre so why do we complicate it I wonder #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
So what are your thoughts @YmchwilStroc #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Can you explain this a little @naomi_gallant for people new to this topic #OTalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@naomi_gallant Absolutely @naomi_gallant, it can become quite a minefield #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Which methods are you considering using @natlouj #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Which methods did you mix @sarahjoOT #OTalk
Alex Smith @YmchwilStroc
@OTalk_ Picking up the point raised by @preston_jenny I think it would be a question of suitable synthesis of the results of both methodologies to answer the research question #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
There in lies one of the challenges the synthesis of results #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@sarahjoOT @OTalk_ That is also my understanding of how mixed methods work. #otalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@naomi_gallant That’s a really good definition @naomi_gallant as often the two methods are concurrent but the data is not integrated and merged. I really like this 😀#OTalk
Alex Smith @YmchwilStroc
@OTalk_ Agree! How to let each type of evidence speak for itself and in harmony is a real challenge #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Here is Q2 and it’s a tricky one #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @sarahjoOT:
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@sarahjoOT @OTalk_ I’m really interested in how you integrated and merged the results @sarahjoOT, any tips or advice #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant @otalk I think having subject matter experts of what you are researching on your research team (esp. if you are newbie) is key. They can point out how the quantitative and qualitative components of research mash together. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @emmaspellmanOT:
#OTalk @OTalk_
Maybe we need to rethink the word opposing, perhaps mixed methods is challenging the idea of being in either one camp or the other #OTAlk
Alex Smith @YmchwilStroc
@naomi_gallant @otalk Be mindful that there are paradigms where they aren’t in ‘opposition’ e.g realism (Pawson & Tilley, 1997) #OTalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@sarahjoOT @naomi_gallant @LynneGoodacre Although the two studies 1 quant and 2.qual were concurrent the first informed the second but the results were not fully integrated and merged. Perhaps on reflection I took the easy option at the time #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @naomi_gallant:
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @emmaspellmanOT: @OTalk_ Q2:
#OTalk @OTalk_
If you find it at some point will you share @emmaspellmanOT the emergence of a 3 rd paradigm is interesting #OTAlk.

Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
Ditto that’s exactly what I did. Seems there is some flexibility in the interpretation of the methodology @sarahjoOT #OTalk @naomi_gallant https://t.co/C9Az4S7kRT
#OTalk @OTalk_
It’s often at the synthesis of results that the challenges lie and when you read mixed methods research often where the limitations are found #OTalk

@naomi_gallant I think if I have capabilities to do more OT #autism research, I definitely will examine the research question(s) first before deciding on how to integrate mixed methods. #otalk

@naomi_gallant I think this depends on the research question and what needs to be studied. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant I have saved a 6 year old Powerpoint I used to have about mixed methods to this day. Never know when that skill set and knowledge will come into play in my career. #otalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@naomi_gallant @otalk Secretly, I enjoyed having to justify my epistemological stance within both paradigms, it sure made me learn about them both and scrutinise the traditions #OTalk @naomi_gallant
#OTalk @OTalk_
Great question and not an easy one to answer especially when there may be contradictions in the data #OTAlk e.g a PROM may suggest a person is doing well, whilst an interview with same person may give a diff. Perspective
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant And then there is someone like me if it is about autism... lol! I am beginning to step foot in academia, but I always want to put in my 2 cents if I see autism research. #otalk

Welcome Claire what methods are you using #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@preston_jenny @naomi_gallant @otalk I came into OT as a quantitative guy. But, OT has exposed the value of qualitative research. So, I left school with a broader understanding of pros and cons of each individual type of research methodology. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Q3 folks #OTAlk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant well- that was a class Powerpoint. Unless I teach at a MOT/entry level OTD program in the USA, don't think I will have a chance to update my knowledge base in this formally. #otalk
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@naomi_gallant I think our underlying clinical practice favours more qualitative philosophies and methodologies but we must strive to ensure we utilise and access a range of methodologies to ensure our research is credible and true to the research questions #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant My undergraduate major before OT was statistics. So, that was why I made that comment... lol! #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @sarahjoOT:
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@sarahjoOT @OTalk_ I consider myself an open minded researcher if I have the abilities to do more. However, I think my primary interest in #autism will rule on what method I will use. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @naomi_gallant:
#OTalk @OTalk_
Sounds great @incredhead you are going to be swimming in data #OTAlk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant @emmaspellmanOT @OTalk_ yes- the customization of mixed methods is what makes this type of research unique. Offers versatility for OT researchers. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @sarahjoOT:
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@sarahjoOT @naomi_gallant Yes, statistics and numbers speak louder than words. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
We’re in the last 10 mins folks and this one will help us all, a time to share any guidelines, resources you’ve come across/ used #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@naomi_gallant That is again is where a subject matter expert is important. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Later folks! #otalk https://t.co/Gv0Esl38Yw
Dr Jenny Preston MBE @preston_jenny
@BillWongOT @sarahjoOT @naomi_gallant Somewhat controversial @BillWongOT 😂. Certainly true in some circumstances but words, if used correctly can also be very powerful #OTalk
Alex Smith @YmchwilStroc
@naomi_gallant I think this is a good place to plug the Equator Network and all the available reporting guidelines etc. https://t.co/SL9hedqZ5y #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Do you have any guidelines to share @gastrognome #Otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
