Orla @orlatheot Hello! Welcome to this week's #OTalk discussing the value of volunteering. Please introduce yourself and answer Q.1: Have you ever volunteered, or do you currently volunteer with an organisation? Tell us about it. Or tell us what barriers stop you from volunteering? https://t.co/M4PD1SiRMW
Elle Russell, MS, OTR/L @elleOT2019 RT @OTalk_: Starting in 10 minutes! This is @colourful_ot on support for this evening's chat, with the usual reminders to use the #OTalk hashtag and keep the conversation professional & respectful :) https://t.co/LrU3E3HhNk
Elle Russell, MS, OTR/L @elleOT2019 RT @orlatheot: Almost time for this week's #OTalk all about volunteering, join in at 8pm tonight https://t.co/tkSs28jGzL #occupationaltherapy #otalk #ot365 #stufdentot https://t.co/X57maxq6o1
deb_OT @dmay_ot #otalk Q1 I'm Deb, 2nd yr student at Glyndwr. We have mandatory volunteering as part of our course. I currently do some work with sailability & used to volunteer at Headway day centre.
deb_OT @dmay_ot #otalk I'd love to do more and after seeing the results from Compassionate Communities I almost volunteered but I also have 2 small kids and a dad with dementia so really I ought to start with them!
Orla @orlatheot @dmay_ot Thanks Deb, what does that involve? #otalk

Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot Hello Kellie here, OT student. I volunteer with the University's volunteer hub on an ad hoc basis. Time can be a barrier, so it's helpful that the hub offers various opportunities, for different purposes and varying commitment levels #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot @SarahSharland19 You are still welcome, no shame allowed here :) #otalk

Orla @orlatheot @markstudentOT Sounds very interesting #otalk looking forward to hearing more as the discussion continues
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT Hello peeps! #otalk
Stephanie Wetherbee @smw1009 I volunteered at New England @NEDisabledSport. I was a snowboard instructor for people with a variety of different disabilities. I was able to learn about monoskis, biskis, and tethering. Volunteering here was so valuable because I brought my passion into others' lives. #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot @megrfowler Welcome to #otalk!
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @orlatheot I think I should consider my TEDx project as a community volunteer project. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot @OT_Francesca Wow, you've done so much #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @orlatheot And for me as a curator of that TEDx event- I have to put in a good bit of time and effort to it because I know putting together an event is not easy. #otalk

Orla @orlatheot @OT_Ciara Amazing, honoured to be your first #OTalk Ciara :)
Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot It's helped me relate to some of my placement settings. Volunteering has also enabled me to contribute and understand some of the issues faced in our local community #OTalk
deb_OT @dmay_ot #otalk I really enjoy all the volunteering I've done (and over the years I've done loads). I like getting to spend time with people, making them laugh, engaging with them, and introducing them to new things - morris dancing, needle felting, kayaking, computers...)
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @orlatheot And of course- I do serve in a couple roles in AOTA. A big barrier for me as a clinician is that I don’t have freedom to visit clinics. I need to use my PTO to do conferences and school visits. #otalk
Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot Plus being able to share meaningful experiences with people #Otalk
Orla @orlatheot @EmilyJ_OT @CumbriaUni Love it, arts in health is a big passion of mine too #otalk

#OTalk @OTalk_ Time has come up in several of the responses to Q1 as a significant barrier to volunteering (esp. for students) - having the option of more short-term commitments is one good way to address it #OTalk https://t.co/yImYLcEpYd
Orla @orlatheot Q3. Next question! What occupational therapy skills have you used in a volunteer role? Tell us about how you used them. What do occupational therapists bring that others do not? #OTalk https://t.co/xst3oJWcUX

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @orlatheot If it is AOTA, I think it will just be teamwork and leadership skills. I enjoy collaborating with fellow leaders. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @orlatheot If it’s TEDx, essentially it feels like I am doing my clinical doctorate project again. #otalk
Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot Our understanding of occupational injustices; using therapeutic communication skills - just by listening and even use of silence; engaging someone in a valued occupation #OTalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @RobTheOT @OT_Ciara @orlatheot @thewfot I heard it from Dr. Adlen Chan, who plays a major part in @USCChanOSOT China initiative last week at #aota18 #otalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @dmay_ot I agree. The experience that is concurrent with my role in the Representative Assembly in AOTA was key to give me the courage to try. #otalk
Orla @orlatheot RT @RobTheOT:
#OTalk @OTalk_ @RobTheOT Good point! From my own experience I think we have a lot of free time as students but often less predictable schedules than someone working full-time (and it's harder to commit to anything long-term if you're going to be moving somewhere else for a placement!) #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot Q4. Time for a controversial question I think. Do you think it is useful to volunteer abroad or is it better to volunteer locally where you are ‘culturally relevant’? #OTalk https://t.co/hU8WOzKS7G

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @orlatheot I facilitated for a week on @IamAnOT17. I consider that as an abroad project. #otalk
Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot While volunteering at a care home, I remembered having some communication difficulty with one of the residents who had a stroke. During the session we spoke very little, but enjoyed the company and working together on our arts and craft project #OTalk

Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot Other times, I remember chatting with service users, and let them share their narratives. It brings a sparkle in their eyes, when they can just share that experience w someone #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @OTStudentDianne @colourful_ot @orlatheot And sometimes new one emerge too! To run about 75-80% of the whole TEDx event is a challenge! #otalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @markstudentOT And sometimes is also motivation too. I know a good bit of LA based OT practitioners would volunteer to serve as clinical instructors at the Ghana externship @USCChanOSOT organizes every year. #otalk

Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot One thing I'm worried about while volunteering abroad is that it can be for a short period of time, what happens after the team has left? It's important to think about the sustainability and impact you've left in the community abroad #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot Yes, and then in turn, inspires us to keep studying and working hard #otalk https://t.co/xN5Y0QMVEb
Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @dmay_ot I've heard of people who are very passionate about volunteering in another country and every year they take time to get back, so they can "hit the ground running" quicker every time they are there #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @DebbiiHarrison @dmay_ot I actually do... especially I recently reviewed abstracts for #caot2018. #otalk

#OTalk @OTalk_ Especially important when working with certain vulnerable groups, e.g. children without parents or separated from parents who may already be dealing with stress of not having long-term stable relationships with adults #OTalk https://t.co/4yx7IeR2Kf

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT A good recent conversation amongst the 4OT groups recently was about AOTA elections. It was interesting to see US based non US based OT discuss this topic. #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT RT @k_tedjo: @BillWongOT @orlatheot Important for these OT practitioners in charities to share their experiences with undergrads, on potential career pathway and role of OTs in this sector #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot RT @carrie_sant: @orlatheot I was also able to take activities that the group didn't think they would be able to do or participate in and adapt them to their needs #OTalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT @k_tedjo @orlatheot Yes- it is almost like for these OT practitioners, their advocacy skills have to be extra strong. #otalk
deb_OT @dmay_ot https://t.co/8TA6NBIXuu has thousands of opportunities. I often look at it trying to figure out how to get 36 hours in a day or wondering if I REALLY need a job when I qualify... #otalk
Orla @orlatheot Loved hearing everyone's thoughts. Looking forward to sharing my own experience of volunteering abroad at #RCOT2018. I'll be presenting on the 11th June in the Student Papers, Session 12, at 15:50. Come and say hi! #OTalk #studentot #occupationaltherapy https://t.co/P94unuWRxu

Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot Forgot to add that another area i volunteered with was in brain injury, with my local Headway. Many fun and different activities service users were introduced to, and they need volunteers just to join them! #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_ Next week is #OTalk Research with Dr Suzanne Martin @drsuzanneMartin chatting about Researching with industry partners. Blog to follow tomorrow.

Orla @orlatheot That's it! Wow, that hour went quick! Thank you to everyone who took part and showing your support. I'd recommend hosting an #OTalk to all the students out there. Apply here: https://t.co/z8StRH67Ud #studentOT https://t.co/OBpAN4Y2zC

Carrie Sant OT @carrie_sant @k_tedjo @orlatheot Many organisations are now accused of 'voluntourism' and the damaging effects this have on the communities who see a constant carousel of volunteers coming through #OTalk
Carrie Sant OT @carrie_sant @orlatheot I wrote a report on my longer volunteering experience, including the application process, experiences and reflections on learning. It was rather long by the end but a brilliant way to document and analyse my learning #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot @RobTheOT Thanks Rob! #otalk
Carrie Sant OT @carrie_sant @orlatheot Good luck! #OTalk
Orla @orlatheot Signing out #OTalk! Until the 22nd of May when we will be discussing my dissertation topic 'the role of occupational therapy in compulsive hoarding.' #studentot #hoardingdisorder #compulsivehoarding #occupationaltherapy https://t.co/Pr2mQpDUHh

#OTalk @OTalk_ Thanks @orlatheot for your insightful questions, and thanks everyone for answering! Next week's #OTalk is on research - keep an eye out tomorrow for our link to the blog post to find out more. :)
Orla @orlatheot Thanks Kellie, yes, let's meet up and discuss more #otalk https://t.co/B3tt8Yo6DE

#OTalk @OTalk_ If you've got any ideas in mind for an #OTalk - an occupational therapy or OT-adjacent subject that you enjoy talking about or that you'd love to hear people's views on - please get in touch! https://t.co/Kf8nFtq4Zi
Kellie Tedjo @k_tedjo @orlatheot Looking forward to! Thank you for the the #OTalk tonight, very insightful and inspiring for us #studentot !
Orla @orlatheot Thanks SPOT, I'd recommend it to all students. Pick a topic you are passionate about and go for it! #otalk https://t.co/OKKkTzBHGx
Carrie Sant OT @carrie_sant @orlatheot @OTalk_ I think befriending is an undervalued volunteer role. I come across so many people who are isolated due to their disabilities and would benefit from hugely from someone who can offer them companionship (and a little bit of OT thrown in for free!) #OTalk
#OTalk @OTalk_ Yes, those were a lovely touch! Really made the questions stand out when scrolling through all the Tweets in the tag. ☺️ #OTalk https://t.co/9s5WeOpgUS
