Its 8pm here in the UK so that means time for #OTalk, hosted by @Keirwales Don't forget the house rules, but most of all enjoy the chat! https://t.co/b30iaduqTu

@Keirwales I think ableism is one that I often see. People see that I can handle a busy OT conference schedule every year... but I actually have to put up with a lot to attend these things because I love OT so much. #otalk

Sophie Maynard @SophieMaynard8
@Keirwales I think it is completely entwined into society which is why so many follow "norms" that are stigmatising. Doesn't mean we shouldn't challenge these though #otalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales I made this comment because I read a lot of tweets from autistic attendees commenting about the autism conferences they were at in Nice and Singapore. But... I know I put up with a lot more when I attend the AOTA conferences every year. #otalk

Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Keirwales @MassDecoration Because it is not as blatantly obvious and in our face? #OTalk it's often something intangible and hard to put one's finger on.
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales Another can be related to culture. For certain disabilities, caregivers/parents might not disclose their children having them and these parents might feel ashamed if they openly disclose. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
@_rachelOT @Keirwales @SophieMaynard8 You won’t get in the transcript, and you can’t use it as evidence if you don’t use the hashtag! #otalk, it’s not being strict it’s just thinking of you! 😛

Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@pixiegirle @MassDecoration @Keirwales But we can. We can certainly ensure that we ourselves *don't* perpetuate stigma! #OTalk start with ourselves!
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales My guess is- because there is no one size fit all solution to this type of issue. #otalk

#OTalk @OTalk_
Can you give us an example Keir @Keirwales #otalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Keirwales However, I wonder if Western OT train has less focus on this because OT is seen as individual and focus on collective is very new #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales Hmm... I constantly have to prove people wrong that I am competent. Of course, I help change my students’ perceptions of what autistic individuals can do in the process. They get to see me in action in class and figure out how I overcome challenges to be their instructor. #otalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Keirwales When I studied in the UK, I got the impression that the social environment was regarded to be the domain of social workers #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales True- I think we should have a general blueprint... but then we also got to use our critical thinking to adapt to the situation at hand. #otalk

@Keirwales I think stigma is so intertwined with our culture, we may lip service to it but dont challenge & , question enough. I think it causes people to opt out and remove their voices because of the impact of shame. So keeps perpetuating. #otalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Keirwales The social work literature has covered these issues extensively, much more than OT does. #Otalk
Sophie Maynard @SophieMaynard8
@Keirwales I like to think it's on my radar quite a lot, but it's never enough. If we don't ask questions then we don't know how stigma is impacting the individual #otalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
RT @teohjouyin: @pixiegirle @Keirwales Discussion around why people with disabilities were institutionalised is a great way to introduce the concept of stigma. #OTalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@pixiegirle @Keirwales My students, in the course of their own studies, learnt to examine their own attitudes towards ppl w/ various conditions #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales @pixiegirle I think so. We can help bridge society’s gaps in that regard. #otalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@pixiegirle @Keirwales Which also includes checking their own stigma towards such people. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
Another form of stigma I sometimes see- some of us are not receptive to constructive opinions regarding identity first vs. person first issue. It is an issue that is going in for decades and some communities prefer IFL. #otalk
#OTalk @OTalk_
Have others experience this? #otalk does the service people are using stigmatised them?
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@pixiegirle @Keirwales Oh I live discrimination. Here there is a public uni which only admits ppl from the majority ethnic group #OTalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@pixiegirle @Keirwales The programme I taught was full of minority ethnic students. Hence we had a very strong social justice focus. We all lived this. #OTalk
K-OT (she, her) 💙 @kalessandram
@Keirwales I think we are but i think because social environments its less tangible than physical environments its harder to challenge and change, it is perceived as being more subjective and personal when questioning and raising. #otalk
Sophie Maynard @SophieMaynard8
@Ruth_Hawley @Keirwales @katebinnington Yes! in stroke, certain presentations are expected for certain types of stroke and patients can be accused of being "functional" if it doesn't fit...usually to find that their MRI shows more extensive damage that first diagnosed #otalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@BillWongOT I hate it when OTs get defensive about this and send journal articles trying to justify their insistence on person-first ONLY #OTalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Tori_Doll_ @Keirwales What is TIC? #OTalk
Sophie Maynard @SophieMaynard8
@Ruth_Hawley @Keirwales Unfortunately this isn't a thing of the past, there is still a huge amount of stigma for those who are diagnosed with a personality disorder #otalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Tori_Doll_ @Keirwales I read somewhere about a quote that trauma informed care is incomplete w/out social justice informed approaches. #OTalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@Keirwales So difficult to navigate these issues sometimes. One has to grapple with oneself first. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales Impact of not being open to hearing feedback on using IFL in certain situations- it is not a good representation of what we are supposed to be as a profession. #otalk

Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@Keirwales @OTalk_ My goal in my classrooms- I want my students to not only come away from the course knowledge they are supposed to learn, but also realize that I work hard to get to where I am today professionally. In a sense, I want them to reframe about autism narrative. #otalk

Dr Carolynne White OT @Carolynne_OT
@Keirwales As an example, weight stigma is socially produced by the way that certain bodies are idealised in our society, while larger bodies are disparaged in the media, and medicalised by health professionals and systems. Weight stigma is normalised, making it hard to challenge. #OTalk
Teoh Jou Yin @teohjouyin
@SomiaOT @Keirwales @OTalk_ Yes! Stigma makes the ppl we ought to serve not want to work with us! @AbdMydin and I are doing clinical ethics research on this! #OTalk

Dr Carolynne White OT @Carolynne_OT
@Tori_Doll_ @Ruth_Hawley @Keirwales This is especially true for weight stigma where people with larger bodies are reprimanded for not exercising enough, but when they do, they face barriers in restricted clothing sizes and often face judgement and mocking, which is a deterrent to being active in public. #OTalk
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT

Dr Carolynne White OT @Carolynne_OT
@Keirwales We can begin challenging stigma by reflecting on our biases and assumptions and where they come from. As a humanistic profession, OTs can uphold the inherent worth of all people we work with and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. #OTalk
