Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Good evening #physiotalk . Tea is almost drunk, and fingers are limbered. Looking forward to some creative discussions around R&R!
Alice Cook @alicecook22 First day back to uni and now the first #Physiotalk of 2018 🤗
Fasuba Ayobami @e_fasuba @physiotalk #physiotalk Hello colleagues, Happy New Year... Love from Nigeria

KB @KBNeuroinfo #physiotalk hi from Wales

Chad Redgrave @chad_redgrave Evening all, happy new year, looking forward to discussions #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk No supply, particularly at band 5 and 6 levels. New grads are mostly securing jobs in the new year/spring, meaning that posts can remain vacant for months, and months, and months. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk We struggled with B6 earlier this year as well. #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Been scraping through by the skin of our teeth for band 6s. About to have 75% of band 5 posts vacant, and 2 (maybe 3) unsuccessful attempts at recruiting #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Very few applicants. Most are automatically rejected by NHS Jobs/staff services. They 1 or 2 that are left have not been meeting the standards expected. #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk We do shortlist, but applicants who do not have the necessary legal stuff to work here are automatically screened out (at least I assume that is what is happening!) #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @NaomiMcVey @physiotalk Our retention is generally excellent. Band 5s will either stay with us as band 6s, or will move on after 2+ years. Currently we seem to have no hope of recruiting until Spring, and then have to wait for the final year student to qualify in the summer! #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @Blaithin_H @physiotalk I can understand this, but it is very bad practice. The governance implications are huge. #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @bendotellis @physiotalk When I qualified (2005), it was a 'buyers' market, and competition for jobs was fierce. many of the people I trained with never got jobs, and had to move on to different careers. Complete reverse now. New grads hold the power!!! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 I think most of our grads have got jobs as well - but equally I don't know of Band 5 posts being unfilled in my area either #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @sas1933 @physiotalk Yes, exactly. #physiotalk
Chad Redgrave @chad_redgrave How to retain experienced 6s who don't want traditional 7 roles? #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Band 7 vacancies come up less often, so there is usually a ready supply of people ready and waiting to step up. That being said, I am aware of some lager trusts (esp. in London) who have really struggled to recruit to band 7/8a posts. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @bendotellis @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Ahem - we don't all have Hunt as our health secretary! #Physiotalk
Emily Stowe @stowe_emily @physiotalk Very few applicants for jobs in a specialist field outside the NHS (hospice setting) #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo #physiotalk Gap at Band 6 level, limited resource
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk But yeah, not enough grads. The growth in physiotherapy as a profession (including the ever growing diversity of career paths) has increased demand, and supply it too far behind (and not responding quick enough) #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @sas1933 @bendotellis @physiotalk Of course, but the if they do meet the criteria, they will likely have the pick of who they want to work for. Trusts are having to sell (and incentivise) working for them so much more than a decade ago #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @AlexMacKenzie11 @bendotellis @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Not in my experience either #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Indeed. @BTHTherapies had to go to Dubai to get staff! #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk @BTHTherapies I do believe it was. I'm told that Ireland has a surplus of physios, so we are considering exploring that as a potential supply #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo Lots of varying opportunities within and outside traditional NHS available once experienced for Band 6s, they hold the power #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk @BTHTherapies We already have a few Irish physios but they tend to have qualified in Scotland in the first place #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @bendotellis @sas1933 @physiotalk By which time, existing posts will have been downgraded to B4 or just cut, as they were vacant for so long, and services have 'coped'; so there will be grads who can't get jobs! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @bendotellis @sas1933 @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk It didn't seem to be like this in the past though? When I qualified in the mid 80s seemed pretty equal supply and demand #Physiotalk
Chad Redgrave @chad_redgrave Any particular specialties that have biggest recruitment / retention issues? #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @NaomiMcVey @physiotalk @BTHTherapies Yes. Potentially. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @bendotellis @sas1933 @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk although very different times as most would leave to start family (aka me!) although I have now of course returned to practice! #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk No. We tried supporting someone who was RtP, but were not overly confident in the @The_HCPC 's requirements and guidance #physiotalk
Cathy Omahony @OmahonyCathy RT @physiotalk:
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @sas1933 I returned to practice pre HCPC (and I had still done the odd on calls actually so not strictly a RTP) I was offered a job, went in on a Monday and started.... #Physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47 @sas1933 I do realise it would be different now - and no bad thing! #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @PaulChapman09 @sas1933 I would argue that the vague and relatively limited requirements that @The_HCPC put on people returning to practice, makes it difficult to meet the standards required for many jobs #physiotalk
Chad Redgrave @chad_redgrave What do we think about education and training of non physio extended skills at aidong retention? #Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @bendotellis @SamHBooth @physiotalk Exactly. I doubt many people embarked on careers as physiotherapists, with the end goal being management! *obviously there are many exceptional managers who also physios #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @PaulChapman09 @sas1933 @The_HCPC Could have done with knowing about you and HEE's RTP support a couple of years ago!!! #physiotalk
KB @KBNeuroinfo @_JoeMiddleton @bendotellis @SamHBooth @physiotalk Also need to consider the diversity of roles at Band 7 #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @NaomiMcVey @bendotellis @SamHBooth @physiotalk Agree. However, when the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Naomi started her first day as a qualified physiotherapist, did she have her sights set on a management role? (please say no, else you will ruin my point!!!) #physiotalk
Pam Watkins💙 @PWtherapist @physiotalk @_JoeMiddleton @JanetThomas47 #physiotalk also having difficulty recruiting to posts . Band 5 Posts on constant re advert . Majority of CVs very poor when you do get any.
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Well thankfully our EU physios can stay post-Brexit. Ongoing challenges will continue to be mismatch in supply:demand, and the NHS becoming a less and less attractive option #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk The NHS got a lot of mileage out of being the standard, expected career path for new physiotherapists. Not any more. #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @NaomiMcVey @bendotellis @SamHBooth @physiotalk Okay, well... there is obviously always exceptions!!! #physiotalk
Chad Redgrave @chad_redgrave Really interesting hour, lots to think and discuss thank you 😊#Physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @physiotalk Workforce planning. Based on good science and data. Everything is predictable with enough data. #physiotalk
Joe Middleton @_JoeMiddleton @sas1933 @physiotalk Enforced National (Health) Service. Seriously though, I just don't know that if it can anymore.... :( #physiotalk
