@physiotalk For me personally it was a lot of experiential learning after graduation, with very little focus on dementia in undergraduate education. There are so many people to learn from, including physiotherapists & other members of the MDT. As long as you know where to look! #physiotalk

@physiotalk In community- often lack of time of carers, so they cannot support rehab goals and aims…. Physio visiting once a week nowhere near enough and they are not given enough time to be able to be proactively working along side us. #physiotalk

@abijhall @physiotalk Sometimes the patient is able to use the walking aid with supervision, and that would necessitate the patient having 1:1 support but the care homes dont always have enough staffing levels to allow for that. #physiotalk

@abijhall @physiotalk @JustineMusiime Part of the challenge no doubt. When so much is learnt experientially post graduation, only those with a curiosity or desire to learn more will likely do so, even with so many PTs likely to work with someone living with dementia during their career. #physiotalk

@abijhall @physiotalk @JustineMusiime I’d say one of the many challenges faced in my area in subacute, and part of what drew me into the area of research, was seeing the term β€˜no rehabilitation potential’ or β€˜unable to participate’ so often in upstream acute notes. #physiotalk

@_SteveQ @abijhall @physiotalk This is a big problem. Sometimes when people hear 'dementia', they automatically put view the patient as one in the 'end-stage dementia' state, forgetting that dementia has stages & many patients with dementia are able to participate in rehab if given a chance. #physiotalk

Stephen Quick @_SteveQ
@JustineMusiime @abijhall @physiotalk I think there are levels to this question. First, with limited focus on dementia in undergraduate degrees in some places, they first need the desire to SEEK the training. Many don’t know what they don’t know. Is more focus on dementia in undergrad more appropriate?! #physiotalk

@dementia_physio @physiotalk Very okay indeed. Someone however would ask, when do people get to that place of 'now, it's time to not go by the book?' By then, they've made a mistake or 2. With care homes, when the professional says something, they feel under pressure to follow. #physiotalk
