Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Thank you Gemma for hosting tonight for the first time as part of the @physiotalk team #physiotalk
Jon Ryan @JonRyanCSP
RT @physiotalk:
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Joining in tonight from a bright but chilly Edinburgh And interested to see how much the strength message is being shared with our patients! #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
@physiotalk Susanne from Somerset #physiotalk
Brustefa @brustefa
@physiotalk Nigeria #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk Justine - joining in from Sunny Hertfordshire. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Yes - it was certainly integrated into my training in the late 80's. And since then some training on strength training with older people as well. #physiotalk
Brustefa @brustefa
#physiotalk https://t.co/WbMG8OBkYX
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
@physiotalk I believe to learn safe techniques i needed in person training which is difficult at the moment #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk Our undergrad PT program had Exercise therapy and sports modules which equiped us with skills in this. I certainly believe training in this area is paramount #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk It was integrated into the undergrad physio training, some was learning on the job. I also did a gym instructor course before I could get a physiotherapy job in the UK, so that has been useful. #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk Those in the acute soft tissue injury phase #physiotalk
Ade-Steve @AdebusolaSteve
@physiotalk Unconscious patients. #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk I believe every patient needs strength training. Extent of training will certainly vary depending on tolerance levels and underlying pathologies. That's why there are principles to training; Specificity & Individuality. I believe every patient group can benefit #physiotalk
Ade-Steve @AdebusolaSteve
@physiotalk Adebusola, physiotherapist from Leicester. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk My frailer older patients are surprised to be offered strength based training. They often don't think its 'for them' But once they see the benefits... #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
@physiotalk Not being able to see people often enough to coach them in safe techniques and progression and dealing with set backs #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@AnnMarieConlon3 @physiotalk Yes - would certainly agree with this. Is a group where providing assistance for function often more important #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk Training in general principles is key because the principles can be applied to different patient populations. It is clear that even within one specific patient population, the exercises have to be tailored to each individual. The one size fits all model does not work. #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @MakupePrince: @physiotalk I believe every patient needs strength training. Extent of training will certainly vary depending on tolerance levels and underlying pathologies. Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk For most people, when you talk about strength training, they imagine the gym, with those massive weights, and the body builders lifting them. So, for an older person, all that makes them believe that strength training is not for them. #physiotalk
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
@physiotalk Individuals often decide if they feel well enough or able to engage, in an ideal world they could access what they need when they are ready but services are often very focused on management of acute health problems and then finding the right professional is a problem #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@JustineMusiime @physiotalk I know! Need to link in with functional gains rather than bulging biceps... #physiotalk
C&M Integrated Stroke Delivery Network @cm_isdn
Great chat tonight about #strengthtraining with #physiotalk . Who’s joining in?
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk For older people - make it functional with lots of body weight resistance And realise what is hard work for them might be very light weights - I had someone today whose 1RM quads was 1.5kg #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk *Patient attitudes Some of my patients with cancer in my setting believe it would do more harm than good so they are very reluctant to carry them out strength. Some are yet to fully understand that exercise is as important to health as the other medical interventions #physiotalk
Brustefa @brustefa
@physiotalk Difficulty in acquiring materials. #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk @neilfphysio We typically improvise a lot in our setting. Every locally available material counts This often includes turning water bottles into "dumb bells" by filling them with sand. Making Bar bells with cement,Old vehicle spare parts etc😁, especially in the community setting #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk There are lots of factors to consider; Muscle strength, balance, flexibility, pain, endurance, cardiorespiratory function, confidence, availability of resources, general safety, existing comorbidities e.g diabetes, heart failure, etc #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk Those with poor balance can hold on for support or do some of the strength training exercises in sitting. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@JustineMusiime @physiotalk Agree I think that unless it is much later stage rehab an older person needs to either concentrate on balance OR strength but they can't do both at once #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@gvhawtin @physiotalk Confidence plays a key role in strength training, doesn't it? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Measure Measure Measure Then ask how much effort they are putting in / feeling #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk **load intensity over repetition number to calculate the 1RM as opposed to having the lift maximally. Then use patient feedback and patient reported outcome measures e.g RPE to adjust the intensity accordingly #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
RT @physiotalk:
Ade-Steve @AdebusolaSteve
@physiotalk Proper education of patients regarding potential benefits, self-reported outcome measures, proper follow-up, and goal directed. #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Multitasking generally is difficult for most older people. Even talking while exercising or talking while walking (something that a lot of people take for granted) is difficult for most #olderpeople. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk They need to 'see' the change and benefits With older people that can be linked to function quite easily and self monitoring with something like a 5xSTS #physiotalk
Brustefa @brustefa
@_HelenAlexander @physiotalk #physiotalk thanks
Susanne syme @SymeSusanne
@physiotalk any chance of signposting to training?#physiotalk

Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@SymeSusanne @physiotalk There's great information on @thecsp #StrongerMyWay page that you might find helpful. #physiotalk https://t.co/x8UILA98hw
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@DrumiMankad @physiotalk Well said🤝 I believe patient/client education really remains a key intervention to ensure long term adherence #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk @neilfphysio Yea, the idea is to do more with little I even have a barbell at home. Used old vehicle spare parts😅 #physiotalk https://t.co/fS6IVMS1VX
