The latest edition of #physiotalk is underway...
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I'm on the @physiotalk account tonights from Edinburgh #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@physiotalk Hi from Birmingham 👋 I’m a physio and currently getting towards the end of my PhD #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Surely it is essential for the future of our profession? The one thing that will drive forwards our interventions to the benefit of all our patients #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@physiotalk Improving practice, improving experience (for patients & staff), improving understanding between professions, making sure research that’s done is actually relevant and could be practically applied in the ‘real world’ #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk It is very paramount in advising best clinical practice which in terms assists in yielding optimal health outcomes #physiotalk
Mr JAY @JaidynManuel
@physiotalk Hello 👋 I am Jaidyn, Physiotherapist of @AsanteKotoko_SC Twitting from Ghana 🇬🇭😅 #Physiotalk
Mr JAY @JaidynManuel
@physiotalk @AsanteKotoko_SC Thanks, my pleasure 🙏#Physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@PhysioResSoc @physiotalk Absolutely! Or if that space doesn’t currently exist it certainly should!! But it should still be informed by what is relevant / important to patients & clinicians in practice. Might be a good opportunity for cross-discipline collaboration... #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@physioralph @PhysioResSoc @physiotalk Very true, I guess that’s why we need both, and to work together 🙂 #physiotalk
Caleb Adeagbo @CalebAdeagbo
@physiotalk Hello. I am Caleb in Lagos, Nigeria. Stroke rehabilitation expert. #physiotalk
Mc Lilbeatz @Lilbeatz31
RT @JaidynManuel: @physiotalk Hello 👋 I am Jaidyn, Physiotherapist of @AsanteKotoko_SC Twitting from Ghana 🇬🇭😅 #Physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@hmlyoungphysio @physiotalk Oh yah! I definitely agree with that It could be easier if the two match. Thanks for clarifying 🤝 #physiotalk
soft☺️ @MubangaMubang16
@physiotalk #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@WoodwicksLianne @physiotalk It’s also a challenge that you have to have an agreed clinical contract prior to being able to apply (as far as I understand), which may be less compatible with other funding that you’re applying for / need to apply for at a similar time #physiotalk
wajida noor @WajidaNoor
@physiotalk Hi, I am Wajida Perveen from Pakistan, executive committee member @PhysioResSoc #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk I think mentoring student PTs and early career PTs from the start would be a good approach. The reading & research culture should be cultivated at an early stage. Opportunities to advance further in a clinical-research pathway should also be shared with them #physiotalk
Louise Connell @researchphysio
@physiotalk @physioralph @logan_angie @HazelRoddam1 #physiotalk yes the national strategy just launched and we have a NW NMAHP one too. Lots of work ongoing to make things happen…
AziZ @AziZ48047936
RT @physiotalk:
Louise Connell @researchphysio
@physiotalk @physioralph @logan_angie @HazelRoddam1 I’m fortunate to have a clinical academic professorial post #weneedmore #ahpresearch #physiotalk. Happy to help anyone I can…
Louise Connell @researchphysio
@ELHTresearch @NHSNWRD #physiotalk might be interested in this on Thursday 12-1
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@mcveigh_joe So true! such a huge focus on dissertation heading towards graduation - and are those skills used again? I would hope so - but perhaps not? #physiotalk
Brighton Paradza @BParadza
@mcveigh_joe @physiotalk In my experience I have discovered that there is still a gap between clinical research practices and research application or adoption in the real world… the challenges being lack of resources, time, staffing pressures, the culture in practice vs academia #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Some how its linked with my last comment - keeping research aware students involved in research from their first job onwards. I don't have the answer though #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@gvhawtin @physiotalk Absolutely - from data collection upwards all levels of staff can be involved #physiotalk
Kops M @KopsM
This is a secondary question. The question should be how do we change the culture of physiotherapy. The culture of physio is still very much dominated by Western culture.
Brighton Paradza @BParadza
@mcveigh_joe @physiotalk A pathway would help to foster a new culture of continuing professional- research development & and growth from early career to later years #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@physiotalk Changing perceptions of what ‘research’ includes may help, like others said, it’s not just running trials, it’s so much more than that & chances are that many physios are already using at least some research skills without really thinking that’s what they’re doing #physiotalk
AHP Practice Learning CoP @AHPpracticeCoP
RT @QMUPhysio:
Louise Connell @researchphysio
@samstuart87 @physiotalk I think the NIHR changed the landscape for what was available- and physios are actually one of the more successful AHPs. More to do- particularly at the post-doc cliff edge & making the different schemes talk to each other. Disclaimer- had awards, on panels etc #physiotalk
Brighton Paradza @BParadza
@physiotalk EBP , yes alway looking at new innovative ways to provide the best care and meet to the new challenges to clinical practice COVID-19 challenges me to the core #physiotalk
wajida noor @WajidaNoor
@PhysioResSoc #physiotalk
Brighton Paradza @BParadza
@physiotalk Interesting there was/ still very minimal research around physio practice in the era of pandemics - an opportunity for research, to challenge contemporary practice #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@physiotalk @researchphysio @samstuart87 This seems like a good idea, but there would need to be a way to ensure potential mentees could find / access mentors, without having to already know people, otherwise it just perpetuates access challenges for people who already have less support #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @physiotalk: Q2:
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk It's really much about having limited support avenues from where I come from actually (Malawi). Some of us are research-oriented (+ve culture) but hardly have many experienced local PTs to support research endeavors. Particularly by being supervisors. 1/2 #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @physiotalk: Q3:
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @samstuart87:
Louise Connell @researchphysio
@CHarrisPhysio @physiotalk @samstuart87 The NIHR have advocates on their website you can access and also list previous award holder details/ research area- reach out and email people- most are happy to help #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk 2/2 Online supervisor engagement surely has a huge role but physical (in-person) engagement still remains top notch #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @samstuart87:
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @physiotalk: Q5:
Brighton Paradza @BParadza
@physiotalk Clinical practice experience an important pillar which together with research always compliment each other-the science of what we do, how we do it, evidence that it works - guiding our decision making processes & priorities and not just a worst of resources & time #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@physiotalk There is a time constraint element that makes it almost impossible for research to happen alongside most clinical substantive posts. The employers would need to engage and make it possible by possibly allowing clinicians to ringfence time for it. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@EMelkuhn @physiotalk I would think that many of the @theCSP professional networks have research funding available. This would be great for a small scale project, as they are not huge pots of money! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@WoodwicksLianne @CHarrisPhysio @physiotalk And this can be national projects as well. Currently taking part in @AGILECSP BEPOP work and the @ParkinsonsEN audit starts next month... #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
RT @mcveigh_joe:
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@PhysioResSoc @EMelkuhn @physiotalk I had local funding MANY years ago to do a small scale research project. Still needed support from academia as part of the application though. #physiotalk
Prince S. Makupe @MakupePrince
@physiotalk It certainly has made a difference, positively However, there have been substantial delays in feedback Some through missed e-mails or just late responses & then there's the time-zone issue 🤦 Virtual meetings can be tricky to hold. Especially when you r 7 hours apart #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@Foxybecster @PhysioResSoc @EMelkuhn @physiotalk Was just about to do a shout out for local R&D departments. They can be so helpful. #physiotalk
Brighton Paradza @BParadza
@WoodwicksLianne @physiotalk @CHarrisPhysio Thats an interesting research question? There multiple factors that define culture identity as it relates to research- it would be interesting to explore eye current expiating factors that drive positive or negative cultures as a starting point #physiotalk
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@mcveigh_joe @physiotalk It would have to be a real big fight😊 Because employers actually know and acknowledge the need for research! However, is it anywhere close to their top priorities? Probably not! The question now becomes, how do we get them to change this? #physiotalk
