Sitting on the @physiotalk account tonight from a not quite a sunny as it was Edinburgh #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@physiotalk Just awoken from a kip and ready for #physiotalk @physiotalk 😉
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@BhanuPhysio @physiotalk Or was it a power nap?? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I must admit to not asking - unless someone specifically mentions an issue with sleep #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Heard it called all sorts like 40 winks, dovering (mum's fave term from a radio show), snooze, quick-drop-off etc #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
#physiotalk Sleep is so important @physiotalk , and working with an older population, it scares me to see how many are put on 'sleeping tablets' and not reviewed. Huge risk factor to falls at night when knocked out but still needing toilet
Amy Black @amy_scotland
@physiotalk Yes very frequently in community paediatrics, especially in new patients under 1 #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
Coincidentally to this #physiotalk, I just happened to be reading the Matthew Walker book 'Why we sleep'. Some really interesting information and research into the science of sleep and dreams
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@Daleyfurter Shame you can't join in #physiotalk tonight @physiotalk as this is the book I am just reading now

@skmansell I love the fact the author says it is the only time he would never be upset if the reader falls asleep when reading his stuff #physiotalk 🤣

@physiotalk #physiotalk Up until last year, it was a general question I have always asked, but in relationship to how fresh/rested the person feels so I can gauge their concentration levels for our session. I knew, but did not pay enough attention to health impact of lack of sleep.
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@BhanuPhysio @physiotalk I think that's where I'm at - if someone says they have had a poor night I think more about the session to come! I think tonight will be changing my Ax and thoughts...#physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@physiotalk #physiotalk Now however, I try and discuss their sleep patterns, what wakes/ keeps them awake, if on sleeping tablets, ask when these were reviewed and what started for. BUT I don't always refer them back somewhere - I suggest they seek a GP review. Need to be more proactive

@physiotalk It's good to see some nice info graphics on #physiotalk sleep benefits https://t.co/gu5sg8QhIb

Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@BhanuPhysio @physiotalk How do you know how many dream per night you have had! I cant remember mine... #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk I agree - There was a huge fad a decade or so ago to keep paper and pen by the bed and write your dreams as soon as you awoke; I remember dreaming, but rarely remember details or the colours
Emmanuel J Ng'wiza @ENgwiza
@physiotalk Sometimes pain affects the quality of sleep. #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
Just musing... Any thoughts about sleep walking in our patients... #physiotalk

@skmansell @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk #physiotalk Several of the people I know with Parkinson's lose their atonia during sleep and physically hit out (some bruised spouses about), or roll out of bed when chasing something in their dreams. Difficult to manage as can be a danger to themselves and bed partner

@physiotalk #physiotalk My question would be if anyone has links or has referred to a sleep assessment (clinic or specialist)? I would assume the respiratory patients have sleep apnoea studies done?
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@physiotalk Sorry - great minds and all that I asked the same question #physiotalk!

@skmansell @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Doing this @physiotalk #physiotalk has actually made me look up available services in Sheffield - and I have just discovered both an adult sleep service and one for children. One to investigate further ......

@skmansell @JanetThomas47 @physiotalk ....and, just discovered a British Sleep Society #physiotalk at https://t.co/6Gizppl5IY but for most information you need to be a member

@AideenPhysio @NaomiMcVey @skmansell @pacarroll_ @Hartey_PainPT @physiotalk Good job I didn't say this then! I am that lucky person that can sleep through anything and despite everything! #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@tomgoom @physiotalk @pacarroll_ @Hartey_PainPT #physiotalk Some of these tips are relevant across the board. I often recommend people add a gentle self-massage of their restless legs (quite a few of my neuro patients) or painful legs/shoulders (arthritic) just when fresh into bed to override pain sensation with pleasant
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@physiotalk #physiotalk Subjective reporting that the person slept better for advice e.g. Change in exercise habits, sleep hygiene or sometimes routine; or equipment so they get out of bed easier to get to bathroom so less disrupted if previously the struggle to move woke them

@NaomiMcVey @AdvancingPhysio @Hartey_PainPT @physiotalk Wait until they are coming IN at 3 or 4 am Its definitely not just the early years... #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@tomgoom @physiotalk @pacarroll_ @Hartey_PainPT #physiotalk I often advise the person keeps 2 or 3 different sized pillows to hand e.g. For under knees, under a shoulder, to prop their back - doesn't matter where as long as they are comfortable position to allow sleep. They can move them as necessary during the night
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@Hartey_PainPT @NaomiMcVey @AdvancingPhysio @physiotalk There is a time between young and not sleeping and coming in at 3am when you will spend more time trying to get them OUT of bed... #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@DanOsteopath I will expand your N=1 study to my experiences as well... #physiotalk
Bhanu Ramaswamy OBE @BhanuPhysio
@physiotalk #physiotalk 2 things - 1. find out more about the MDT sleep service and what they recommend as pertinent questions to ask/ ways to measure. 2. Read the papers posted tonight by others. Thank you for the usual thought provoking discussion and others' useful input @physiotalk
