physiotalk @physiotalk
Good evening and welcome to tonights #physiotalk on Physiotherapy and Cooking
physiotalk @physiotalk
Our guest host this week is @BenRowlesPhysio Thank you for the suggested topic and questions Ben! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
So as usual we'll start with hellos! Let us know who you are, where you are tweeting from and for tonight only - the last thing you cooked! #physiotalk
Karen West 💙 @KWestPhysio
@physiotalk Hi 🙂🧁 #physiotalk

@physiotalk Thank you #physiotalk Great to be here tonight!
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Hi! I'm on the @physiotalk account tonight from a slight sunny Edinburgh The last thing I cooked was Spicy Singapore noodles - but I've also got blackcurrants stewing to make into jam when we finish! #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@BenRowlesPhysio Great to have you and a great topic! I think most physios love cooking (or perhaps not - we will find out tonight) #physiotalk
Karen West 💙 @KWestPhysio
@physiotalk I'm in sunny Hampshire, pizza (home made and hand stretched) #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@KWestPhysio Sounds lovely! #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
So lets get started with the first question of tonight #physiotalk
Niamh Keating @niamhkea
@physiotalk Hi, Im Niamh, a physio work ing in cardiac rehab, and beef chilli is the last thing I cooked🙂 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q1: Do you think that physiotherapy is in a well placed position to promote health and well-being? #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@niamhkea Welcome! I'm starting to get hungry with all of these food based tweets... #physiotalk
Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@physiotalk Hi, tweeting from Lincoln. The last thing I cooked was a vegetable pasta sauce with a mix of veg, sundried tomatoes & ginger #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@UnityPhysio Yum! And welcome.... #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@niamhkea @physiotalk Hi Niamh, thank you for joining. I used to work in Cardiac Rehab and that's where a lot of my passion for Health Promotion grew! #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
RT @physiotalk: Q1: Do you think that physiotherapy is in a well placed position to promote health and well-being? #physiotalk
EQL @EQL_AI
Hi to everyone at this week's #Physiotalk. Great to be here. This is @Sharlenellopez from @weareeyecatcher tweeting on behalf of EQL, the makers of Phio, a digital-first rapid data collection tool using conversational AI covering all #MSK conditions. #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@physiotalk Really interested to hear all your thoughts on this! #physiotalk
Jo Jennings (she/her) @JoJenningsNHS
@physiotalk Hi in Warwickshire, made homemade pizza for lunch (sauce and Base) #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
Yes! Not just physical advice of course but brief interventions for general health and wellbeing very important #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@UnityPhysio @physiotalk Very Mediterranean, sounds great! #physiotalk
Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@physiotalk Yes absolutely! I think a lot of what we do is health coaching. There are some issues with scope of practice and lack of clarity around this (maybe not something for this tweet chat) #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@JoJenningsNHS Pizza seems popular tonight! Welcome! #physiotalk

RT @BenRowlesPhysio: @physiotalk Really interested to hear all your thoughts on this! #physiotalk
Karen West 💙 @KWestPhysio
@physiotalk Definitely. I work in the community with older people. If they aren't eating well then they are unlikely to have the energy to exercise or the building blocks to build muscle. Diet and exercise go together. #physiotalk
Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@physiotalk It was delicious 😋 #physiotalk
Jo Jennings (she/her) @JoJenningsNHS
@physiotalk I think so. Would like to know more about nutrition though #physiotalk
EQL @EQL_AI
@physiotalk I think all HCPs are well placed to talk about nutrition as it'll be received with more authority than messages received from other sources (e.g friends, weight loss companies) as the focus will naturally be on health and wellbeing & the impact of nutrition on that. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@UnityPhysio But an idea for another.... I like that :) #physiotalk
Taher Jaffer @taher_jd
@physiotalk Hi from Leicester, current lockdown city! Last thing I cooked was chicken katsu curry! #physiotalk

As Physiotherapist, research has shown that we are well-placed in the prevention and wellness sphere. Part of wellness is Nutrition #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@KWestPhysio @physiotalk I say that so much to my older patients as well I can only do so much with exercise - you need the nutrition as well to build muscle #physiotalk

@physiotalk Absolutely! No matter what the speciality or setting, we are very well placed to promote health and well being. We develop meaningful therapeutic relationships with patients and by making every contact count to promote good health we can have a huge impact #physiotalk
Karen West 💙 @KWestPhysio
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk With my older patients I need to tell them them opposite of what I tell some of the younger ones ie take up snacking, put full fat milk in your tea and cream in your porridge #physiotalk

Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@pasl_pt I’ve done an 8 week nutrition course & have been advised as a PT we can only give basic general advice in-line with the PHE campaign, anything else needs to be clear not in physio role & have additional insurance #physiotalk
Niamh Keating @niamhkea
@BenRowlesPhysio @physiotalk Absolutely, we need to move away from telling patients what to do and enable and support them to change behaviour when ready using these skills #physiotalk.

EQL @EQL_AI
@niamhkea @BenRowlesPhysio @physiotalk #Physiotalk Totally agree with this. The behaviour change is the key part, not always the knowledge. There may be physical issues relating to cooking that could be the barrier to more healthful eating
Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@physiotalk Yes as it’s a really important part of marinating energy, tissue healing etc. Also some people really love cooking & it’s sometimes a goal to return to #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47

@UnityPhysio @pasl_pt Thank you for this! Totally agree, https://t.co/9iFvyVyNkD actually aims to promote many aspects of cooking, and for nutritional advice (especially for those struggling with obesity or eating disorders) needs to be referred to a dietitian #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
@UnityPhysio Interesting comment through the week that cooking (as an activity I presume) was an OT activity. Does anyone set cooking as a physiotherapy goal? #physiotalk
Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@physiotalk Cooking is a massively culturally sensitive topic and also a taboo. Before we start blanketing everyone with cooking advice, shouldnt we be checking to find out what the person cooks, why the do/dont and what cooking means to them? #physiotalk
Taher Jaffer @taher_jd
@physiotalk Exercises and Nutrition go hand in hand. As a Neuro Physio treating stroke survivors, teaching them to cook improves their functionality, makes them independent but also incharge of their own health, providing them with sense of achievement. #physiotalk

@physiotalk @UnityPhysio Defintely!!! Great activity for upper limb rehabilitation, looking at grip technique and motor control. Physio should be integrated into a functional context to support patients in understanding their movements and being able to self correct, promotes self management #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47

Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@physiotalk I have explored cooking and what it means and sit down family meals and variation in diet. But it seems highly nuanced. I focus more on the meaning and the value versus specific nutritional advice. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@niamhkea Do you think it would be useful for teams to have access to a nutritionist / dietitian (or do you already?) #physiotalk
Jo Jennings (she/her) @JoJenningsNHS
@physiotalk Sorry forgot the #physiotalk Its been a while since I talked to pt about nutrition and cooking. Was always surprised how many people told me they wanted to know how to cook but had never learnt as it was never their 'role' in the household

physiotalk @physiotalk
Q3: What do you think we could learn from The Mediterranean Diet, from a physiotherapy and cooking perspective? #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@laurarathbone @physiotalk This is what https://t.co/9iFvyVyNkD is about. For nutrition advice, this needs to go through a dietitian, or using basic guides on NHS resources. For cooking however, we can promote eating with family, sourcing local foods etc #physiotalk
Karen West 💙 @KWestPhysio
@physiotalk @UnityPhysio Sometimes making cups of tea/light meals/washing up is more meaningful to patients than doing exercises so we do that instead #physiotalk
Physiotherapy Association of Saint Lucia Inc. @pasl_pt
@physiotalk @niamhkea In my practice, a wellness Assessment can include the Dietitian but in the Home Care setting oftentimes, you may have to share ideas with patients in the absence of a Dietician. Sometimes the 'Cooking' activity can be used as a from of Exercise :) #physiotalk.

@KWestPhysio @physiotalk That’s lovely 😊 Those are important goals and things for physios to be practicing with people. Cooking related too. #physiotalk
EQL @EQL_AI
@BenRowlesPhysio @laurarathbone @physiotalk Yes, there's a difference between cooking advice and nutritional advice #physiotalk
Kelly Saunders @kellsaun
@physiotalk Where good knowledge in terms of diet and health promotion is known guidance and how fits into individuals culture etc can be discussed as secondary prevention for example. Using cooking as activity as needed for independence or because gives joy should 100% be physio #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@physiotalk We've spoken a lot about nutrition, however The Mediterranean Diet is not just about nutrition. It encompasses regular physical activity, drinking moderate amounts of alcohol with meals, eating slower and with family (etc) #physiotalk Is food all about it's nutritinal value?
Freya Sledding 💙 @SleddingFreya
@physiotalk I’m in very curious ... bobbing in for a listen #physiotalk

physiotalk @physiotalk
@BenRowlesPhysio That's such an interesting point. More about the lifestyle ethos perhaps? #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@physiotalk @ThrivePES Exactly! there's a lot about food and cooking which isn't to do with nutrition, even promoting to eat food with other peoples and not in front of the TV has been shown to have a positive effect in weight management in adolescent! #physiotalk
Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@physiotalk I have no idea what 'the Mediterranean diet' is? I grew up for a few years east side of spain & food was a family & village event. Every1 shared. Everything was available. Eating was a way loving, connecting and caring. But, this also meant women were @ home 1/ #physiotalk
EQL @EQL_AI
@BenRowlesPhysio @physiotalk Not at all. In the NHS guidance 'Nutrition Matters' along with AGE UK have shown that for older people in care homes, the food is a key criteria that influences their perceived QOL. #Physiotalk
Kelly Saunders @kellsaun
@physiotalk @niamhkea All rehab services should have access to dieticians to give specific advice for their conditon as guidance is different it isnt a generic one size diet fits all!! #physiotalk

Niamh Keating @niamhkea
@physiotalk @ThrivePES I think this is a major barrier that needs to addressed #physiotalk
Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@physiotalk I would hate us to go back to that. Cooking has changed partly in response to the social role of women. Any conversation around cooking and encouragement towards that needs to be respectful of the pressures upon the modern woman to 'do it all'. /2 #physiotalk
Jo Jennings (she/her) @JoJenningsNHS
#physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
@kellsaun @niamhkea Certainly agree - but can access be limited? We can refer for some conditions and malnourished based on MUST score but I doubt dietitians have capacity to see all who would benefit from their advice - sadly #physiotalk
Thrive Physiotherapy Education Services @ThrivePES
@physiotalk Definitely! Knowing the limits of your scope is important. If something is out of your scope refer onwards to someone more appropriate or look to up skill if you feel its really pertinent to your role. Physios are of the best placed professions to identify and referer #physiotalk
Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@physiotalk When I think of a Mediterranean diet, I dont just think olives and lemon juice. I think of the role cooking plays in the culture and the pressure upon women. This is important when appropriating the 'diet' fr ok m a different culture. Food doesn't happen in a vacuum. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk

Taher Jaffer @taher_jd
@EQL_AI @KWestPhysio @physiotalk Agree, Cooking does serve as one of the best way to empower patients and good way to self manage themselves eventually. Reduces risk of deconditioning. #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
Q4: Do you consider the Social Determinants of Health during your physiotherapy consultations ? #physiotalk
Physiotherapy Association of Saint Lucia Inc. @pasl_pt
@laurarathbone @physiotalk I think 'guided moderation' without making it a rule might be the essence. #physiotalk
Niamh Keating @niamhkea
@physiotalk In my experience dietician input in in-pt setting can be difficult to access as often their focus is often in mal-nutrition or undernitrition. #physiotalk
EQL @EQL_AI
@physiotalk Great question #physiotalk
Niamh Keating @niamhkea
@physiotalk @kellsaun I agree and just tweeted the same just now 🙂 #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
More about social determinants of health here https://t.co/785D5HS2Yq #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@niamhkea @physiotalk Good point, it's mainly for those struggling with obesity and eating disorders who would benefit from their input! But this is important because dodgy nutrition and diet advice can make these issues worse for people #physiotalk
physiotalk @physiotalk
The social determinants of health (SDH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life #physiotalk
Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@physiotalk Yes, we absolutely should. But also asking, do we know how accurate the social determinants of health are not he individual in front of us? #physiotalk
SimpsonUpperLimb @LimbSimpson
@physiotalk We are well positioned to be health advocates. We are excellent at signposting other services. Men / certain ethnic groups are less likely to consult with GP but may feel physio is accessible so it is a great opportunity to promote health #physiotalk
Kelly Saunders @kellsaun
@physiotalk @niamhkea 100% access is a problem. But they are the experts and although we can provide generalised health promotion advice i believe we are doing are colleagues a disservice if we arent championing for the benefit of fellow AHPs and instead trying to fill the gap #physiotalk
B e n R o w l e s @BenRowlesPhysio
@physiotalk This is where https://t.co/9iFvyVyNkD makes it's link between physio and cooking. The social determinants of health show that cultural, environmental, and socio-economic factors have the largest effect on our health and well-being (according to the Kinds Fund) #physiotalk
Graeme Paul-Taylor @GraemeGpt
@physiotalk Absolutely critical if working with a Biopsychosocial model #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47

@kellsaun @physiotalk I think we all do this from time to time #physiotalk

@physiotalk @EQL_AI @kellsaun @niamhkea I mostly work through a 'virtual' clinic as I see people referred to me from around the world. I find it's a great opportunity to be introduced to their home, their garden and how they spend their days. I'm able to present as people so their functional goals! #physiotalk
Kelly Saunders @kellsaun
@BenRowlesPhysio @niamhkea @physiotalk Its also thinking about remote online drop in sessions for example. Communities of people can access a specialist to ask there specific questions as they go along their journey for example. No referrals, just accessible. #physiotalk

@physiotalk Without a doubt facilitating behaviour change is massively improved by deep learning of a cognitive and behavioural change framework. Obviously I use ACT as i teach it, but i also find motivational interviewing really a big part of my practice. #physiotalk
Niamh Keating @niamhkea
@BenRowlesPhysio @physiotalk Yes this is true. But even those with obesity dont often get seen as an in patient in my experience. Missed opportunity in my opinion. Teachable moment as they say. #physiotalk

@physiotalk @KWestPhysio It is a subject, but people like @jamieoliver are trying to push this further in their campaign to lower childhood obesity rates in the UK! It's come a long way since Jamie's School Dinners but definitely more work to be done, especially for deprived areas! #physiotalk

Kelly Saunders @kellsaun
@BenRowlesPhysio @physiotalk @KWestPhysio Yeah potentially. Eating habits and diet are influenced by so many factors including many psychological that are often entrenched from a young age. Breaking down and changing those can require huge patient motivation levels as well as guidance and support #physiotalk

Unity Physiotherapy & Wellbeing @UnityPhysio
@physiotalk Fad diets are a big problem rather than long-term healthy eating, regular exercise & a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes we need to delve deeper than the weight loss goal to get to sometimes motivators for behaviour change #physiotalk
Laura Rathbone🌱✌🇪🇺🌈 @laurarathbone
@BenRowlesPhysio @physiotalk I think it's an interesting point, but perhaps goes a bit far in assuming causation. Disordered eating that develops into food restriction and purging is part of a complex and nuanced disorder. But I completely agree, they contribute to toxic positivity and shame. #physiotalk

@physiotalk Slightly off tangent, but I'm reading the book 'Why We Sleep' and it emphasises the value of sleep hygiene in health and well-being.
