@physiotalk @rachel_stockley Hi all! Really looking forward to this #physiotalk! I am a physio and @UKRI_News Future Leaders Fellow @KingsCollegeLon
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
Hi! I’m Rachel. I’m a senior research fellow in stroke research at@UCLan. I am a @UKRI Future Leaders Fellow which funds my research into how we design, use and evaluate digital tech in rehab. I am co-hosting this tweetchat with the fabulous @KatieJSheehan #physiotalk #ukriflf
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
I'm on the #physiotalk account tonight from Edinburgh So I'll be watching out for those pesky missing hashtags....
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@physiotalk @KatieJSheehan @rachel_stockley Hi Hayley, Physio and NIHR MARM graduate; tweeting from Birmingham #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@physiotalk @KatieJSheehan @rachel_stockley Masters in Research Methods (health) sorry once a MARMite you then always use acronym! #NIHR #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
I am not sure, sometimes when I meet other AHP researchers, they’ll often, but not always, say I am a radiographer, SaLT, Physio etc by background, almost as if that is what they used to be, not what they are now - does that resonate with anyone else? #physiotalk
World Physiotherapy Future Network @WPhysioFuture
For students new to twitter.... don't be afraid to join in chats like these! πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk Wondering if the number of AHP professions dilutes the identity - or is there strength in numbers? #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
And I just realised that I didn’t mention I was a physio in the intro!!! #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@physiotalk I think research nurses as a role and even job title are embedded in service structures and plans.AHP researchers feels more emerging and rarer-we need investment.Great to see clinical academic examples on Twitter for inspiration #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@rachel_stockley Would say that happens in any role where you step away from 'clinical' including senior management. I've always wondered why? #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
RT @JanetThomas47: @physiotalk Wondering if the number of AHP professions dilutes the identity - or is there strength in numbers? #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@JanetThomas47 @rachel_stockley I used to do this... until it was pointed out to me! I am a physio working in research πŸ‘ #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@VickiG_physio @physiotalk @HayleySGrice Not visible locally. I would have no idea if any physios are in a research role in my health board! #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@JanetThomas47 @rachel_stockley Perception if not clinical then not a 'real' physio? #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@JanetThomas47 @VickiG_physio @physiotalk @HayleySGrice That is really interesting, so is it a case of highlighting/promoting presence at that level or getting more people into these positions? Or both? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@KatieJSheehan @rachel_stockley Hopefully not! #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@physiotalk We often know the leaders in our field and discipline… some in other disciplines but perhaps not AHP leaders in other fields? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@rachel_stockley @VickiG_physio @physiotalk @HayleySGrice Suspect both! #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@physiotalk Should we know and celebrate AHP leaders in fields/disciplines outside our own? #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@KatieJSheehan @physiotalk I agree this might depend on clinical specialty/interest, for me it tends to be people in neuro, particularly stroke but there are some cross specialty leaders that I really admire too #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@KatieJSheehan @physiotalk Yes! Often aware of other AHPs working in my area of interest / expertise, especially with closely linked AHPs such as OT #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk Oops forgot the #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@JanetThomas47 @rachel_stockley I found that when I moved into research I became prouder of my physio identity (maybe because I was the only one in our team?), but I do still introduce myself as β€˜a physio by background’, I’ll have to change that introduction in future! #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk Agreed! How do we break the barrier to ensure that it is known (and funded) as core business? #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@LisaSalisbury73 And I WAS just about to tweet there was some great hashtagging as well.... #physiotalk
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@KatieJSheehan @GemStanf @physiotalk Area of interest for me #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@KatieJSheehan @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk And funding can be challenging! I’ve yo-yoed between funding as part of research projects but on short term contracts so often can’t apply for funding and being in academia but then with less time to do applications! #physiotalk
ACPCF research @AcpcfR
@acpcf members interested in research @physiotalk research tweet chat in process. Come & chat.
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@LisaSalisbury73 @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk THIS!! We need to lobby for institutional support for bridge funding between fellowships (to develop applications). #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@VickiG_physio @GemStanf @KatieJSheehan @physiotalk what techniques do you use/recommend to track impact? #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@KatieJSheehan @LisaSalisbury73 @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk completely agree. Is this a bigger problem for AHP research or is it across the board? #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@KatieJSheehan @GemStanf @physiotalk A bit of all the above. Sometimes people who interact with tweets or I meet in real life or via research interactions #Physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk Research on the impact of AHP research? Would synthesize our value in a piece of evidence to lobby non-traditional funders to be more open to AHP researchers and their ideas? #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@rachel_stockley @KatieJSheehan @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk The MDT research group I’ve worked with seems to have had more nursing/medical opportunities. There are more for AHPs than 10-15 years ago but still think it’s a real challenge. #Physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@KatieJSheehan @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk oooh I like that - I think we need to be more visible, not just in research but in media and policy too. Sometimes doing good research isn't enough to make a change #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@physio_samways @physiotalk Wow sounds an amazing split post.Was this a new role?or how established is that clinical academic post? Do we need to shout about athis type of opportunity to spread the ripple wider to all trusts #physiotalk #SharingIsCaring #rippleeffect
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@GemStanf @VickiG_physio @physiotalk @Lisa_Newington @elenamarywells @CMarthaAlex Link please 😊 #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@rachel_stockley @KatieJSheehan @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @physiotalk Had a really interesting discussion about policy and impact of research this afternoon and how to tap into these structures to ensure the research is heard/known and can influence policy #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
For those just starting to think about doing research – what is that you need? We are all at different stages and perhaps one size doesn’t fit all? #physiotalk
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@KatieJSheehan @physiotalk Yes! It’s great to learn about areas you know less about, & to get different perspectives on things. Plus, it’s good celebrating AHP leaders in different fields to have concrete examples of how AHPs can move into areas they may not have traditionally been involved in. #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@HayleySGrice @physio_samways @physiotalk Very cool! Agreed we should share exciting initiatives like these – so others can use to justify the change they are seeking #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@physio_samways @physiotalk @HayleySGrice That sounds like a great opportunity! #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@VickiG_physio @KatieJSheehan @GemStanf @physiotalk couldn't agree more! In your experience can professional bodies help with policy impact? Who else can help? #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@physiotalk @GemStanf @VickiG_physio @Lisa_Newington @elenamarywells @CMarthaAlex @thecsp - worth a piece in frontline? #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
RT @lindsaybearne:
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@physiotalk We should go for it more! Contact major news outlets, local radio with research findings… #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@physiotalk @EmOnTheBrain @KatieJSheehan @VickiG_physio @GemStanf agree with @lynnemann13 - it is better now than it was, but we may also have to be more creative with where we apply/get funding?#physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
RT @CHarrisPhysio: @KatieJSheehan @physiotalk Yes!
@physiotalk Consider bottom-up approaches too - research practice placements in non-traditional research and innovation settings e.g., AHPs working in tech. @ciarapt very aspirational in this space! #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@rachel_stockley @physiotalk @EmOnTheBrain @KatieJSheehan @VickiG_physio @GemStanf @lynnemann13 Definitely need to be creative with funding! #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@EmOnTheBrain @rachel_stockley really interesting - does this point to a lack of visible 'next steps' at research career stages for AHPs? #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@rachel_stockley Those that have been successful navigating AHP research sharing a map of their career path to widen physio/AHP perspectives of the options available.Many I have met are very humble about this and so inspiring #physiotalk #pioneers #legend example-@AvrilDrummond1

The challenge faced in changing historic entrenched professional attitutes towards research based practice ... πŸ™‚ #physiotalk https://t.co/0YRVSqHAmV
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@GemStanf @physiotalk @EmOnTheBrain @rachel_stockley @VickiG_physio also need AHPs to apply to non-traditional funders... just because you don't see a previously successful AHP doesn't mean you wont be... #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@VickiG_physio @physiotalk @EmOnTheBrain @rachel_stockley @KatieJSheehan @GemStanf Definitely agree with this! Impact was the starting point of discussions which led to how to influence policy earlier today and how to communicate this in a grant application #physiotalk

@physiotalk I think interdisciplinary research has lots of strengths – if a problem could be cracked by a single profession it would have been long ago! Hard problems need multiple standpoints and #AHPs are suited and well used to working like this #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice

Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@lindsaybearne @GemStanf @physiotalk Mentoring between institutions/areas of research. Helps consider different opportunities/perspectives and sometimes just reassuring that challenges are the norm! #Physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@rachel_stockley @physiotalk My experience of interdisciplinary groups has been great. Lots of perspectives and allows assumptions to be debated and discussed and definitely helps the development of projects. #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@GemStanf @EmOnTheBrain @physiotalk @rachel_stockley @VickiG_physio do you have access to a research mentor to help navigate? #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
RT @GemStanf:

@physiotalk Dissemination in multiple forums... Presenting in (multiple) conferences, publishing in peer reviewed journals, presenting to professional bodies, publishing articles in 'lay man's language', etc #physiotalk

RT @physiotalk: Q:
C Harris, PhD @CHarrisPhysio
@HayleySGrice @rachel_stockley @AvrilDrummond1 It could also help to have AHPs who are early in successfully navigating research careers doing this too. It can sometimes be helpful to see how people only a few steps ahead of you did it, rather than only seeing those who are further into very successful careers #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@CHarrisPhysio @HayleySGrice @AvrilDrummond1 One of the things I had to get used to (not sure I am fully!) is the high rate of failure in research applications. It’s hard but its competitive and I guess it is just trying to remember that when it gets tough. A more experienced mentor can help support #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@physiotalk Networking, networking, networking...#physiotalk I attend stroke/neuro conferences/meetings due to my area of interest however I need to broaden my outlook beyond my profession/speciality to other AHP forums #reflection
Janet Thomas @JanetThomas47
@physiotalk I suspect it has to be seen as part of a 'normal' or usual career path, rather than something that is more unusual of 'difficult' to do #physiotalk
Katie Sheehan @KatieJSheehan
@physiotalk Support for AHPs between fellowships/clinical lectureships often fragmented vs. support offered to medics – we should lobby for equity #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
RT @physiotalk: Q:
Justine Musiime - MSc MPH MCSP @JustineMusiime
@lindsaybearne @physiotalk You are very right. #physiotalk
Lisa Salisbury @LisaSalisbury73
@physiotalk Differences between funding in Scotland so many NIHR funding opportunities not accessible. We have the chief scientist office but not as well developed AHP opportunities #physiotalk
Rachel C Stockley @rachel_stockley
@physiotalk What about factoring time explicitly in grant awards for applying for the next funding pot? Pressure on employers to make research post/role perm. on being awarded funding? #physiotalk
Hayley Grice @HayleySGrice
@JanetThomas47 @physiotalk Quality Improvement QI culture embedding has potential to promote clinicians (any level) to challenge current practice, review against guidelines, engage with patient stories & generate QI topics that can grow from internal projects to research &beyond #QI #physiotalk #capacity
