A1: I used to do a lot of public speaking before getting sick. I co-ran a storytelling event in Toronto and regularly wrote & performed stories about super personal content. Now that my health is stabilizing, it's something that I really want to do again. #WEGOHealthChat

A1. Yes, I have some experience with public speaking, mostly during my undergrad years (around 2011). I’m always super nervous to speak in front of large audiences - until I get on the platform/stage. At first, my voice is shaky, but once I get in the groove, everything flows.

Q1. I started public speaking back in 2016 being at a home dialysis conf. The more I do it the more I enjoy it and being a patient I enjoy when I can speak medical terms and show that us patients know our illness so great when it's medical staff audience.

@wegohealth Q2: For my 1st keynote - 25 minutes long - I practiced 40 times. As a professional with a huge amount of stage experience, I still practice 40-60 minute keynotes 4-10 times, depending on the material. #WEGOHealthChat

A2: Ahhhh, I could never wing it! When I first started, I used to record myself on my phone and then listen to my story on my commute. It was... deeply embarrassing but helped me put some space between me and my writing. #WEGOHealthChat

@wegohealth Q2: I have never winged a keynote, every single one I’ve given I practiced. For QA, Fireside chats, and panels on stage, it comes back to practicing your material out loud, so you have well phrased answers to the questions. #WEGOHealthChat

A2: Nowadays, I memorize all my presentations. Even if I have to deliver a 90 minute keynote, it’s memorized, because I believe that when you memorize it, you own it. The speech actually becomes a part of you at that point. #WEGOHealthChat

Every time I’ve had to do a presentation at work or school or church or somewhere I always out notes together but end up “winging it” when it comes to the actual presenting. If I were to public speak I would have to focus more on prep I think. #WEGOHealthChat

@MustStopMS Winging it in public speaking is actually OK, but the key is owning your material. When you own it, you can completely go off on a tangent. One habit that I incurred speakers not to get into is relying on slides in your presentation. #WEGOHealthChat

@MikeVeny A2: EXACTLY ! You have to OWN the keynote, which means full memorization. It's the speakers who don't fully memorize that may come across as wooden or practiced.Practice so much that you don't look practiced. #WEGOHealthChat
