#AutChat mod @autchatmod Welcome to #AutChat, a weekly chat for autistic & similar people Sundays 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 9pm UTC/GMT! https://t.co/rRrhi9g3PS #AutChat hosts chats on topics related to our experiences as neurodivergent people. See our past topics here: https://t.co/F56bZKG5Jo
#AutChat mod @autchatmod We post transcripts of the weekly chats to our website, https://t.co/QrdW2e85Ey. We link to them on the #AutChat tag and on our Facebook page. Transcripts are created with Wakelet, and are visible there and on our site.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod #AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc). We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-dx'd, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod Other people can post, retweet, or share any of our posts or links. This includes our tweets, our Facebook posts, links to our website, and links to Wakelet. If you want your tweets excluded from future #AutChat transcripts, DM us.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod For #AutChat announcements and weekly questions, follow this account. DM us to request reminder tweets (we get a lot of notifications during AutChat and sometimes don’t see replies). How to participate in #AutChat and other twitter chats: https://t.co/SkuXgvACRk
#AutChat mod @autchatmod Questions are prefaced Q0, Q1, Q2, etc. When you reply, preface tweets with A0, A1, etc & include "#AutChat" so others see them! Please capitalize it as #AutChat to make it more accessible to screenreaders.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, accessible political activism. Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're tweeted to answer): https://t.co/dsQaTahMMR
#AutChat mod @autchatmod Political activism can be challenging for various reasons, especially if you’re autistic or similarly neurodivergent. For example, many politicians in the U.S. value phone calls and visits, which are hard for many autistic people, more than letters/emails. #AutChat

Helen Rottier @helenrottier A0: Helen, she/her, graduate student, Chicago I love learning about accessible/crip/ND activism strategies- everyone should have the chance to fight for justice! #AutChat

#AutChat mod @autchatmod Q1: There are many ways to do political activism. What are some you know of? (Let’s try to get a broad list!) #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier A1: There are so many ways to do activism work. Some of my favorites are sharing stories and hashtags about how policy affects us and sending Postcards to Voters, encouraging voters to engage in local elections. #AutChat #CripTheVote #PostcardsToVoters
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo A0: I’m alyssa and I’m a grad student who might be a scholar-activist type? #AutChat

Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo A1: There’s contacting representatives and registering people to vote, for a couple things. #AutChat

#AutChat mod @autchatmod Q2: What aspects of your neurodivergence(s) make some kinds of activism harder (or easier)? #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo A1: I would also consider creating the research work that other activists and policy people will use as at least adjacent. #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo RT @Sarahmarieob: A1:
Helen Rottier @helenrottier A2: I would definitely attend more events/rallies if I didn’t struggle with crowds. Phone calls are also challenging, but luckily there’s @autselfadvocacy’s proxy calling system! #AutChat
Solis Stella 🌍 @SolisStella@forfuture.social @SolisStella1 @autchatmod A1: Petitons. Discussions. Speeches. Demonstrations. #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo A2: Anything involving a phone is harder because of my communication needs. Anything involving crowds is harder because of my sensory needs. #AutChat

Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo A2: The same communication needs that make phone things harder make written things easier though. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier @yes_thattoo Collaborating with, empowering, and supporting other marginalized students and reimagining the ways we value knowledge are also political. #AutChat
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A0 #Autchat Hi! I'm Darla, and I work with an Ontario based self advocacy group, A4A. I'm kind of new to activism and definitely find it a bit challenging.
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A1 #autchat I do some autism advocacy based presentations and went to my first Pride march last summer. I've also done some emails and letter writing but not a lot.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod Q3: What kinds of accommodations might make political activism more accessible to you? #AutChat
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A2 #autchat I find any advocacy that puts me in direct and immediate conflict with someone else very difficult. I don't like sustained hostility, and energy levels/spoons can be a real issue. Doing organized presentations is easier because I can prepare and control things.
Helen Rottier @helenrottier A1: Other important ways that haven’t been mentioned include voting and direct giving/mutual aid. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier A3: Anything that 1. removes the need for extensive research on complex policy issues and 2. allows me to engage from bed is a win for me. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier I already mentioned @autselfadvocacy’s proxy calling system (which is awesome!) and #P2V, but wanted to share about @resistbot which makes contacting your representatives, via letter, email, or tweet, super easy! #AutChat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr Hello, I am Solveig! I participate in activism in a number of ways, though I kinda wish I had time to participate in more vacation. Eep! #AutChat A0
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A3 #autchat Anything involving phones would be way easier for me to do via email. I need more time at meetings to type my messages, and my use of a speech generating device instead of verbal speech needs to be respected (people have been REALLY good about this for the most part).
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr I participate in #CripTheVote chats. I engage in Twitter conversations about disability rights, I write to my representatives, and I can engage with politics through my labor union. #AutChat A1
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A3 #autchat Noise, light, and crowds are also an issue. I get easily overwhelmed by all three and my reaction can run from confusion/dissassociation to just running away to meltdown, so I avoid protests and most marches or gatherings. Clear directions also help a lot.
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo RT @helenrottier: @yes_thattoo Collaborating with, empowering, and supporting other marginalized students and reimagining the ways we value knowledge are also political. #AutChat

Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo A3: Recognizing the value of support roles is probably the most valuable accommodation for me. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier RT @yes_thattoo: A3: A3: Recognizing the value of support roles is probably the most valuable accommodation for me. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod Q4: How do you fight discouragement and fatigue and keep going? What self-care helps? #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier A4: Lately I’ve felt super discouraged so I’m trying to “fake it til I make it” and keep moving forward little by little. #AutChat
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A4 #autchat Procrastination and friends. Being involved with a group helps because it keeps me more on track and encouraged. Procrastination is...like its definitely a thing no matter how much I wish it wasn't, but it sort of DOES help in a weird way.
Black @BlackIgwe @autchatmod @yes_thattoo A3: Finance. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier A4: I’m open to any suggestions as to how to stay motivated and practice good self-care. Lately I’ve been watching Jeopardy and crying. 🙃😭 #AutChat
Darla @basicnbizarre @autchatmod A4 #autchat But also the biggest thing is trying to learn to pick my battles. Do I have the energy to engage with this thing? How much potential hostility can I manage if I do? etc.

Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr I can make anything into my special interest, but I am also so tired!!!!!!!! 😭#AutChat A2
Solis Stella 🌍 @SolisStella@forfuture.social @SolisStella1 @autchatmod A2: I am considered rather talented in improvising things, because it makes me nervous when things do not go as planned, so I think of a plan B. This makes it harder to participate in loosely-organised things. #AutChat
Solis Stella 🌍 @SolisStella@forfuture.social @SolisStella1 @autchatmod A3: I am rather priviledged in this context, but I still often wish for more neurodivergent people around, so that using accomodations like the option to leave early seem more normal. #AutChat
Solis Stella 🌍 @SolisStella@forfuture.social @SolisStella1 @autchatmod A4: Constantly reminding myself why I do this and what I gain from it. Taking breaks if necessary. #AutChat
