Welcome to #AutChat, a weekly chat for autistic & similar people Sundays 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 8pm UTC / 9pm BST! https://t.co/rRrhi8Ysri #AutChat hosts chats on topics related to our experiences as neurodivergent people. See our past topics here: https://t.co/F56bZKXGAW
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc). We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-dx'd, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
We post transcripts of the weekly chats to our website, https://t.co/QrdW2e85Ey. We link to them on the #AutChat tag and on our Facebook page. Transcripts are created with Wakelet, and are visible there and on our site.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Other people can post, retweet, or share any of our posts or links. This includes our tweets, our Facebook posts, links to our website, and links to Wakelet. If you want your tweets excluded from future #AutChat transcripts, DM us.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
For #AutChat announcements and weekly questions, follow this account. DM us to request reminder tweets (we get a lot of notifications during AutChat and sometimes don’t see replies). How to participate in #AutChat and other twitter chats: https://t.co/SkuXgvACRk
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Questions are prefaced Q0, Q1, Q2, etc. When you reply, preface tweets with A0, A1, etc & include "#AutChat" so others see them! Please capitalize it as #AutChat to make it more accessible to screenreaders.
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, stimming. Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're tweeted to answer): https://t.co/G2F8WecPNv
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Stimming is repeatedly doing things like rocking, hand-flapping, fidgeting. Not only autistic/similarly neurodivergent people stim, and not all stim, but it’s common. More about stimming (research by an autistic self-advocate): https://t.co/0o9nJTWXQO #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A0: I'm a graduate student in neuroscience and also I moderated fuck yeah, stimming on tumblr for a while. Technically still do, I think, but very very inactive lol #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q1: Do you stim? If so, what are some stims that you do? If you use toys or objects to stim, feel free to recommend/link. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A0: I’m Helen, 23, grad student in Chicago, IL. I’m super excited to talk about stimming, the comfort and joy it brings me, and all of the ways I stim. #AutChat #StopDropStim
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: I absolutely stim, in many different ways. When I’m happy or excited I flap or flutter my hands/fingers, jump or skip, and bob my head side-to-side. #AutChat
Ramona @QuartzDisc

Ramona @QuartzDisc
@autchatmod A0: I’ve been finding that I stim a lot more than I thought—just in ways I thought weren’t “officially” stims so I was interested in today’s topic and the article. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: When I’m thinking/in class or overwhelmed, I stim by writing lists and notes. I love the feeling of pen on paper, and it keeps me organized. #AutChat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A1: I rock and flap mostly but I do have some fidget objects. Including, yes, a fidget spinner. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: In less formal or stressful situations, I use stim toys to keep my hands busy and keep from picking at my skin. My favorites are my Tangle and flip chain. #AutChat
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@autchatmod A1: Absolutely. Depending on where I am, how I’m feeling, etc: rubbing objects like worry stones, tapping out rhythms on things like my cane, playing with stim toys like fidget cubes or play-doh (I carry a tiny tub with me), move things into patterns like right angles... #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A1: When I’m anxious I rock my body back and forth or slowly rub the backs of my hand with one fingertip. When I’m tired or have been masking for a long time, I have less control of my body and stim more openly. #AutChat
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@StephMelnick96 Another Doctor Who fan here. ☺️ #AutChat

#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q2: When and why do you stim? On purpose or does it just happen? #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
@endeverstar Before my autism diagnosis, my therapists all had stim/fidget toys in their offices and I was an avid explorer. That’s where I had my first Tangle experience. #AutChat
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@autchatmod A2: Both. I found I’m more likely to tap things when I’m in public and feel like I’m being stared at when I’m not mentally in a place to shrug it off. I try to deliberately stim now in tough situations (like an upcoming medical exam). I hope I don’t forget in my stress. #AutChat
Haley Moss @haleymossart
A0: Hi, I'm Haley, #OpenlyAutistic and #ActuallyAutistic attorney, writer, speaker, artist. I'm all about respecting the stim (so long as it isn't harmful to others or self-injuring), so let's get to having flaptastic conversation! #autchat

Haley Moss @haleymossart
A1: I do! My hands flap when I'm REALLY excited. I also twirl my hair, move my feet and hands a lot, rock in chairs, fidget with lots of hairclips...let's just say I like movement, a lot. #autchat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A2: I explained in A1 that I have different stims for happy/excited, thinking/listening, anxious, and tired. Does anyone else experience this? #AutChat
Haley Moss @haleymossart
I stim to stay calm. Also to express excitement so big my body can't help but take part in it. A hand flap is much more engaging & experiential than a smile. I only wish neurotypical people could feel the joy I do when I am SO happy my entire body performs my feelings. #autchat
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@helenrottier Yep! I’ve been noticing this in myself recently. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A2: The stims I listed are mostly intentional/conscious, because when I don’t do those things, I pick at my skin, which I suppose is also a stim. I’m trying to stop! #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
RT @QuartzDisc: @helenrottier Yep! I’ve been noticing this in myself recently. #AutChat

Hi hi I am Solveig! *flapping* #AutChat A0
Haley Moss @haleymossart
@helenrottier Yup. There's a reason the hand flap is a happy/excited one, the fidgeting with objects is an anxiety distraction for me, and some when I am bored and crave input. #Autchat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
@QuartzDisc I saw a presentation this week about AI understanding of human facial expressions/emotions, and in a sense, I think stims are a type of bodily expression of emotion. #AutChat

I spin and flap and tap fingers and re adjust my sitting position many many times. Lots of stims. #AutChat A1
Haley Moss @haleymossart
@BrunoHache @CANADA566 @chewigemcanada I'm a nail biter especially with anxiety. It's a habit I've been trying (and failing) to break for years #autchat

Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
@endeverstar @stimtasticco Omg @stimtasticco saved my hands. I used to chew on my hands as a stim and would wreck them. My hands look nice now. The chewables thigh? Not as nice haha! #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q3: Are there any stims that you would like to stop or are trying to stop? Strategies for that? #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
A3: I’m desperately trying to stop picking at my skin, especially my face and chest. I’d love to hear strategies from others! #AutChat
Haley Moss @haleymossart
A3: Not really. All of mine don't hurt me or others. #RespectTheStim here. Though I do want to stop biting my nails when I'm anxious at some point. It would be nice to have pretty nails but also when they get too long before my next manicure it's a sensory issue so...#autchat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
@endeverstar For sure! Autistic space makes it easier to let the guard down and stim openly and differently than I do even when I’m alone. #AutChat.
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@helenrottier @CinaedhVik Also agree!! And huh that is interesting. I know that when I was a kid, I got tired of being so readable so I worked on my poker face. Then I got tired of being so unreadable and reverted to my natural state lol. #AutChat

For me, I will stim whenever I play songs that I love on my iPod while driving. #autchat
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A2: I stim most of the time TBH. My different ways of flapping are among the ways people who *can* read my body language at all manage to do so. #AutChat
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A0. I am an occupational therapist by trade. I didn’t know what stimming was initially. But I get interested after OT becoming my profession. I now realize how much misunderstanding exist, as I grew up in a culture of quiet hands and bodies. #autchat
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A1. Because I grew up in a quiet hands and bodies culture, I would have gotten in trouble with stimming. But now I will say on occasions, especially when I need stress relief during my teaching job. #autchat
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
Sometimes it’s voluntary and other times not. Also depends on the reason. Some stims are self expression and others are there to block out stressful senses. #AutChat A2
CarrieHall1001.bsky.social @CarrieHall1001
@autchatmod Q1: I use my hands often when talking especially during job interviews. It’s been cited as a reason for not getting the job #AutChat
Bill Wong, OTD, OTR/L @BillWongOT
@autchatmod A3. I realize I am a loud hands person when I do public speaking. I probably will hope to decrease that just a touch. #autchat

Helen Rottier @helenrottier
@WildBunnyArts I need to work on noticing when I’m doing it too. During this #AutChat I’ve already noticed like four or five times. 🤦🏼‍♀️
SigmaBunny #RaiseTheRate @SigmaBunny
A0: Hey, I'm SigmaBunny. I've seen a few of these and thought I'd have a go at one #AutChat
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@autchatmod A3: No but I wish I could mask them better when I’m stressed in public. I have ADHD too so sometimes I can use that as an “excuse”—that I’m doing it to help me concentrate which really is sometimes part of it, but more, I find ppl “get that” explanation better. 🙁 #AutChat
Nicole Radziwiłł @nicoleradziwill
@autchatmod A1 #AutChat I'm pretty controlled but battle urge towards severe fidgeting & very uncomfortable in chairs in general. Biggest issues are popping jaw & constantly scratching scalp, face, and eyebrows which I have to control daily so I don't injure myself.
SigmaBunny #RaiseTheRate @SigmaBunny
A1: I tap and wiggle, and I always have some kind of sensory object on me. I also take a bag to my ttrpg nights, and share them with people. They like that. As far as particular objects, most are just small toys I find that have interesting textures? #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q4: If other people have negative reactions to your stimming, how do you deal with that? #AutChat
SigmaBunny #RaiseTheRate @SigmaBunny
A2: When I'm sitting for a while, it might just happen. I also take out an object if I'm in a stressful situation, like holding a slow-rise foam toy while doing my grocery shopping. Then it's on purpose to distract myself #AutChat
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A0 I'm NoPuzzl, NeuroExtrordinaire! XD In all seriousness though, I'm a Neurodiversity activist and an anti-ABA activist specifically, so I have a LOT of feelings on the subject of stimming. I won't infodump all of them here on A0 lol. #NoPuzzlChats
SigmaBunny #RaiseTheRate @SigmaBunny
A3: When I'm very stressed I pick at my skin and pull hair. I want to stop doing that and try to do other things instead, but it's very difficult. I used to chew my nails, but that stopped when a particular stressor was removed. #AutChat
Helen Rottier @helenrottier
RT @BillWongOT: @helenrottier @endeverstar Yes- versus in the classroom. I got to act professionally when I am teaching although my students will get why I do that at times. #autchat
Michael Cohn @AMichaelCohn
#AutChat A2: [delurks] When I'm sitting in meetings, my attention wanders a LOT, and I think stimming sometimes helps keep me anchored on what we're talking about.
SigmaBunny #RaiseTheRate @SigmaBunny
A4: With toys, I haven't really noticed any negative reactions, though I might get an annoyed "stop tapping" from time to time. I try to switch to something else then, but it is very difficult to switch when you were doing something unconciously #AutChat
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A1 Hell yes I stim! There are so many ways lol. I have this house key I love to spin between my right thumb and index finger. Bouncing and spinning are fun. I bounce a lot but don't spin often. https://t.co/hyvgaxl2RN
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@autchatmod A4: It depends on context and who. I still mask heavily bc I’m not “out” as autistic, so usually it’s just strangers giving me looks, but since I’m female, young-ish with tattoos, an undercut, & use a cane/obv mobility-challenged, the stares are kind of pick-a-number. #AutChat
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A1 Fidget cubes but the clicky sound specifically. Rocking, rocking, and more rocking is nice and soothing. If the fidget spinner is metal it's like a strange combination of tactile and visual stimming; I move it and it tilts a specific way but it HAS to Noise(TM).
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A0 #autchat I’m Derek, and giving myself permission to stim without shame has been HUGELY helpful in learning to better self regulate.
Michael Cohn @AMichaelCohn
#AutChat But if I'm having a really compelling, absorbing conversation, then sometimes I'll sit very still, with my brow intensely knitted, sometimes in a kind of weird physical position. And somehow I'm _sitting still_ with passionate intensity that also feels like stimming.
Haley Moss @haleymossart
Stim on. And if given the chance, I'd explain gently how stimming makes me feel calm, connected to movement, manages anxiety, or is a full body happiness. Or invite them to join in on the fun. #autchat
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A1 Apparently I'm like L and was owling before it was cool. If people don't know what owling is, it's the things where you put the balls of you feeron the chair and --- you know what it may just be easier to put an image/gif of the Death Note anime where L does this. https://t.co/KO49J6erN4
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A1 #autchat Ummm...loads. A lot of stuff with my hands (not always flapping, but especially if its pressure based, squeezing stuff). I orally stim a lot with food, sometimes bite my hands or lip; used a chewlery for a while but kept forgetting it.
Solveig ⚧ - Autistic Acceptance Worldwide @autisticb4mmr
[cn:quiet hands] It’s really hard for me to talk about this because people I care about still insist I do quiet hands. I was doing quiet hands for five years. As an adult. In my thirties. 😔 #AutChat A4
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@NoPuzzl98 Yes! Love the clicky sounds. I’ve let friends try my fidget cube and it’s funny but they *didn’t* like the clicky sounds. #AutChat
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A1 I only need to do it like once or twice a week but I don't see this getting any better anytime soon lol, if anything I might end up perching MORE overtime lol. It gets worse when you realize I always do it because I can't think otherwise.
Michael Cohn @AMichaelCohn
#AutChat A3 I also doodle complicated geometric shapes during meetings. Not sure if that even counts but I feel cocooned in it the same way as w/ more physical stimming. I need to critically evaluate whether it interferes with my ability to pay attention.
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A2 #autchat stimming is like a pressure valve. If it feels like there is “too much” inside me, moving and stimming can let it out. I also do it for actual stimulation; to keep my mind on track, keep myself calm, and keep my brain occupied. Also yeah sometime it just HAPPENS.
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A1 The owling thing is also my favorite stim lol, it's only embarrassing if I make it feel such to myself. So I really don't care too much and since I need to do it...welp, too bad, Imma do it anyways regardless of what people say.
Michael Cohn @AMichaelCohn
#AutChat it also makes my notebook look like a sixth grader's, but w/e.
Ramona @QuartzDisc
@AMichaelCohn I’ve done this! Didn’t think of it as a stim until recently. It was a way of managing the boredom (I have ADHD too) & also the discomfort of being closed in with a bunch of people against my will and all the stares when I participate. Managing the overwhelm, basically. #AutChat
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A3 #autchat Most of my self harming ones. Biting my hands or lip, picking at my skin, and hitting myself (I tend to default to low to moderate self-hitting when stressed or anxious) would be nice NOT to do, but not always sure how to redirect. My phone helps, though.
Dr. Alyssa @yes_thattoo
A4: Sometimes it happens and I tend to tell them bug off. At my graduate orientation someone said "no flapping" and I typed "YES FLAPPING" in all caps then flapped more. #AutChat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod

Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A4 #autchat I honestly don’t know. Stop and feel like shit, generally, but that’s as much fallout from growing up and aspects of my time in special ed. I don’t really have a good mechanism there, tbh.

#AutChat A2 I stim all of the time but it's actually much more often when it's an intense feeling, positive or negative. Overwhelm and joy will both bring about the same result for the most part. The difference is usually what the stim is. https://t.co/H7JhNlc8IX
Darla @basicnbizarre
@autchatmod A2 #autchat 2/2 Oh! Vocal stims! I have always found making weird noises to be VERY helpful with stimming. Its the way making the sounds make my throat feel, as much as anything else, weird as that may sound.

#AutChat A2 Owling seems to be the only exception to this rule? I said if helps me think but maybe I should be more clear about this: it makes it so extraneous thoughts don't come to the front as often and quite literally lowers my blood pressure because it calms me down.

#AutChat A3 That gd nail chewing would be nice to get rid of. It doesn't really correlate with any specific thing, it just seems to happen because I hate my nails and for texture reasons. It's useless AND harmful. https://t.co/lzBqwNPf7n
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
#AutChat A3 I've actually been chewing my nails *less* because of that but I still end up doing that if there aren't any pens around. And it *has* to be a certain pen. And I've tried the StimTastic chewelry bit it just doesn't work So, again, texture reasons.
The Rusanya Collective | ⚖🧠🛡 @NoPuzzl98
