Sarah Owl @OwlStory
A0 Perfect timing! I'm Sarah, dx'd ADHD, anxiety, self dx'd autistic. https://t.co/QTT4vKBYQA
Joy’s Daughter @TheHealstorian
@autchatmod A1 I travel by car mostly. I have to drive or else I get motion sickness. 🤢 #autchat
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
A0 Hi! I'm Laura, dx at 28, student of natural medicine and mental health, telehealth coach. Very grateful I'm NOT traveling for Thanksgiving this week. #autchat
Sarah Owl @OwlStory
A1 I'm not a fan of plane travel, but have traveled by plane and car for long distances, bus and train for shorter ones. #autchat https://t.co/mHv2tGau6p
Joy’s Daughter @TheHealstorian
Q0 I’m Julia Joy, 30s, Louisiana AfroCreole womanist, solo mom, blogger, healer, historian, human rights activist. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a1 part 1: I grew up between US and UK so grew up flying a lot. Depending on where I'm living I'll travel either by car (in US) or by buses and trains (in UK) a lot.
Joy’s Daughter @TheHealstorian
@crankyautistic My favorite method is travels also! #autchat
Joy’s Daughter @TheHealstorian
@crankyautistic My fav method of transportation is taking trains 🚂 also! #autchat
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
A1 I have traveled in most forms and used to take the bus and subway. Now I drive daily, which saves a lot of 🥄🥄, but when I'm with my partner he drives. Air travel is the most stressful for me. #autchat https://t.co/5OWmExIdpZ
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q2: What is traveling like for you? #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a1 part 2: OH, I do use the tube occasionally... but I try to avoid it at all costs. It's a travel method I use only if I need to be somewhere quick and don't have the time to use something else.
Joy’s Daughter @TheHealstorian
@autchatmod A2 Traveling can be stressful if it’s too crowded or noisy or if there is unexpected change in the route. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a2 part 1: everyday traveling is not awful for me but it does wear me down. long distance traveling is ok if I'm able to prepare adequately, but usually unpleasant. I think I agree with others that trains are a favourite transport mode.
TerraMagnus @terramagnus
@autchatmod A0: Hello. This is Magnus. You also know me as @Magnus919 but I'm trying to focus my travel topics to this account. I've historically had a lot of problems w/ travel but I love new places/people/experiences. #autchat
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
A2: I love traveling to both new and familiar places, but I can enjoy it more if its very well planned and I'm with someone who can take the lead with interactions. I enjoy driving long distances but at night lights make it a challenge. Air travel is a nightmare. #autchat https://t.co/YmdKmW7fAY
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a2 part 2: All of my worst experiences traveling are when I'm traveling with other people. It adds an exponential amount of factors for me.
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a2 part 3: When it's on my terms, I love traveling in the "going new places" sense, but the actual traveling to get there is tedious and sometimes v bad for sensory imput
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A0: Hai. I'm dianejwright, 40s, newbie, and author of Birthday Girl (about an autistic teen girl https://t.co/D54WdyYdf1). Catching up now. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a2 part 4: something that happens normally, but is more often while traveling... Going into an unfamiliar place (like museum, café, restaurant, store) without any preparation is always a disaster for me. So I try to plan even very specific details while I travel.
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A1: Too often. All modes. All distances. None enjoyed. #autchat
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q3: If traveling is stressful for you, what do you do to reduce stress? #autchat
TerraMagnus @terramagnus
@autchatmod A1: A sort of synesthesia has made eating experiences troublesome for me until recently. i.e. the texture of the sound a word on my mouth. #autchat
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A2: Intensely unpleasant & stressful. It's better with the travel kit (sunglasses, hat w.visor, isolating earbuds, snacks, etc.) but still horrible. Takes forever on the other side to acclimatize. #autchat
TerraMagnus @terramagnus
@autchatmod A1: I prefer driving a car myself. Train isn't too bad if the seats are roomy. Staying in the dining car gives me more room, esp. if I'm with friends/family. Planes are a horrible necessity but will do more. #autchat
TerraMagnus @terramagnus
@autchatmod A2: Getting to and from destination by plane is really really hard for me. Part of it is how tiny the seats are, which also causes people to be in my personal bubble for hours. It can be pretty traumatic. TSA is difficult, too. #autchat
Sarah Owl @OwlStory
A2. Stressful. I prefer car to most other things. Planes were horrible for a long time (noise, anxiety), but have improved over the last year. My bus/train commute was worse on me than I thought (noise). #autchat https://t.co/g3axi1zzns
TerraMagnus @terramagnus
@autchatmod A3: Taking a valium before TSA helps. Surrounding myself w/ friends or family also reduces the trauma of personal bubble violation. #autchat
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A3: For me, noise, lights, smells are the most challenging. If I can minimize those (earbuds w.podcast or other singular sound, limiting vision, scarf), I can handle interactions better. Actual travel is ok, it's the people that need negotiating. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a3: planning and being prepared headphones, music, stim toys, a book, water a change of socks usually and sometimes change of clothes
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
A3 For air travel, I bring noise canceling headphones, wear comfy clothes, pack snacks and good books and movies, and try to arrive early. I also check my bag so there is less to keep track of as I navigate the airports. #autchat https://t.co/rUY2lbdXo0
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A3: Oh yeah, one time I requested assistance to the gate and (surprise!) no fuss, no sideeye, nuthin', just a polite @AirCanada woman leading the way. It. Was. Awesome. #nowords #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a3 part 2: does anyone take anything before flights?
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
I'm a chronic overpacker myself. #autchat https://t.co/sH6w7BPJIV
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
PREACH. #actuallyautistic #autchat https://t.co/tG5MpdhbTL
#AutChat mod @autchatmod
Q4: How could traveling be easier? What could other people, transit companies, or airlines do to help? #autchat
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
@endeverstar I'm starting to see that this is accurate. So accurate. #autchat
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A4: Stop SHRIEKING into the public announcement system. That'd be nice. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a3 part 2: If I can, I will usually schedule 1 to 3 hours to "prepare" which is essentially just chilling and trying to shed all the built up sensory stress of the day
Dr. Laura Z. Weldon @neuronaturopath
A4 Quiet rooms, for meditation/ prayer/ reading, in airports or even sensory friendly spaces that are okay for adults to use (some airports have them for kids which is great). #autchat https://t.co/WANOK3rArS
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A4: Waiting areas could have low key zones with non-harsh lighting, no tvs (other than for status), quieter loudspeakers, closed captioning, maybe even dim lights for alerts to look at the status screens. They used to have smoking lounges, surely they can do this. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a4: making airplanes less crammed would be nice also, little foot rests or surfaces to place your feet on planes, trains, and buses because I like to sit with my knees up less harsh lighting
TerraMagnus @terramagnus
@autchatmod A4: It's ok to not put the seats so close together (side by side, front to back). And eliminate the TSA. It's just theatrical anyway. #autchat
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A4: Training staff that persistent questioning or shouting directions repeatedly and unchangingly may not be the way to get results. #autchat
an autumn cloud @ro_xwan
#autchat a4 part 2: make walking pavements wider and more even
The Haüs of Jin @dianejwright
A4: Compassion. #autchat
