Debbie, DBT Path Founder @DBTPath RT @CarlDunnJr: Icebreaker: Icebreaker: What's your favorite kind of music? - (2nd question)... Do you use music to take care of yourself? How? #BPDChat
HealingFromBPD (Debbie) @HealingFromBPD I hear you! My psychiatrist opted to put "History of Severe Psychological Trauma" instead of BPD at the time of my diagnosis so I would receive compassionate care...and because that's the reality of why I was presenting BPD symptoms! #BPDchat

jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr I love calming music with lots of instruments. I use it to take care of myself, i tend to pay attention to the instruments when everything “outside” is too much to handle #BPDChat

Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle ...hi #bpdchat I'm having a really hard day cause its fathers day, and a lot of my traumas are connected to the loss of my dad. I keep disociating and forgetting to take my meds. And I feel so alone since 'graduating' from DBT and losing all my supports.
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr I like pop punk mostly like Panic! At The Disco and Simple Plan. I also like the band Busted (my teenage obsession) and George Ezra at the moment. Music means a lot to me. I wish I got the chance to listen to it more often. #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Meandmymhmatter Hi! Thanks for sharing. #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle For me music is really social #bpdchat . So I like music people send me or share with me. I'm also really visual so I like music with great/interesting music videos that tell a story.
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr I guess you call my music taste would be vintage, country, a bit eclectic. I know a good voice when I hear one. I love the song writers! I use music as my means to get from a to b, ( so I can keep my anxiety levels at a manageable level that I can get things done) #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @SeanSaid_ Hi! Thanks for sharing - welcome to the chat. #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @CarlDunnJr Hey there :) I'm doing well I've done a lot of #selfcare today because #FathersDay is a struggle #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @NeverwillFall17 The main topic ... coming up in a bit.... is 'Dissociation'. #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @CarlDunnJr Lmao I just posted about one of my alters take a look at my feed I'm pretty intuitive lol #BPDchat
🇺🇸Mickey🇺🇸MD🧜♂️(jk)🇺🇦Get🏥vaxxed! @SamandDeanfan_1 RT @CarlDunnJr: If you're going to post something that may affect others please consider using TW (for Trigger warning) to give others a heads up. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @Juliebynight:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I have a wide interest in music. If I had to take something to a desert island it would Dylan. But I like rock, punk, jazz (esp. saxophone giants, free jazz), some country, classical, opera, etc. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @KCapoodle Hey- you are not alone- it's an awkward day for me too. My dads death was a violent one 44 years ago. My stepdad was an abusive a$$4013. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @GemmaLuescher @KCapoodle I'm sorry to hear that. Glad you're here for this chat. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I guess we'd better start into the main topic for today - there's a lot to talk about. If you have favorite music you're invited to post it. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @shoutywhisper:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Tonight's topic is.... Dissociation: What's Your Experience? #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr @KCapoodle Thanks Carl, when do we start on the main topic now? #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr One of the 9 criteria for BPD (in the DSM) involves experiencing severe dissociation when under stress. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Have you experienced dissociation? How would you explain dissociation to someone else? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Jim Riske @jriske RT @CarlDunnJr: Icebreaker: Icebreaker: What's your favorite kind of music? - (2nd question)... Do you use music to take care of yourself? How? #BPDChat
#PrEPa Pig 🏳️🌈 @Phumlani_PrEP RT @CarlDunnJr: Have you experienced dissociation? How would you explain dissociation to someone else? #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher I using to help me while painting. Especially while that last painting was very emotionally intense. #BPDChat https://t.co/zZtqDJj0qJ
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Derealization is one form of dissociation - when the world feels unreal or you feel disconnected from the world. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Depersonalization is another form of dissociation - when you feel unreal or you feel disconnected from yourself. #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @SeanSaid_:
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @CarlDunnJr Yes sometimes I just space out a bit but other times I #split fully I have st least one #childlike alter in my system that is angry and maybe 4 max and two protective alters one is a #guardianangel the other the goddess #Nephthys from #ancientegypt #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr What type of dissociation do you experience? How often do you experience it? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr When do you experience dissociation? #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr Recently I seem to be experiencing it after a long time of not. It's like I'm out of my body, frozen in time. My thoughts just disappear and I just feel I've been absent when I return to the moment. At least I think this is dissociation? #BPDChat
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe RT @CarlDunnJr: Depersonalization is another form of dissociation - when you feel unreal or you feel disconnected from yourself. #BPDChat
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe RT @CarlDunnJr: Tonight's topic is.... Dissociation: Tonight's topic is.... Dissociation: What's Your Experience? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Meandmymhmatter That sounds like it. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @shoutywhisper:
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr Usually at the end of an exhausting day, when I’m by myself but desperately wanting someone by my side #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr #bpdchat yes. I've experienced many kinds of dissociation. From lost time, to feeling like the world around me is moving at a different speed (fast fwd or slow mo). 1/3
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr What kind do you think this is? #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr It is so hard when you have such a wide range of dissociative states, some are the more angry, aggressive states because you can't handle that range of emotion in your "normal" - I hope your husband understood it wasn't your normal state and was able to forgive you. #BPDchat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @CarlDunnJr When my past trauma is triggered I am depressed or I am overtired #BPDchat
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe RT @CarlDunnJr: Derealization is one form of dissociation - when the world feels unreal or you feel disconnected from the world. #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr Is the alter friendly? Can you communicate with it in your consciousness? #BPDchat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr #bpdchat 2/3 The most challenging would be disociating by losing all memories that occurred in a certain emo state if I wasnt in that state. Eg. When happy only remember happy things and when sad only remember sad things. A very strong mental seperation triggered by emotions.
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @CarlDunnJr @helovampirehoe Ive gotten that confused with pseudopsychotic symptoms before now I use #groundingtechniques to cope with that as I usually only experience it in my #hypnogage or before I fully dissociate #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Meandmymhmatter I'm not an expert but the "out of the body" experience sounds like depersonalization? (Aguirre & Galen mention a similar experience in their book "Coping with BPD". #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @GemmaLuescher: @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr It is so hard when you have such a wide range of dissociative states, some are the more angry, aggressive states because you can't handle that range of emotion in your "normal" - I hope your husband understood it wasn't your normal state and was able to forgive you. #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr We also want to hear from you if you have BPD but don't experience dissociation. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Does dissociation feel uncomfortable or unpleasant to you? #BPDChat
NINA FIELDS-POURVARA @nbfp1 RT @shoutywhisper:
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr TW I experience a lot of derealization. I look around the room and nothing feels like it should belong to me. I always think about how I was suicidal and shouldn’t have invested so much in having a life. #BPDChat
Artemis Qld @ArtemisCJD RT @DBTPath: You get to choose with your boundaries who you share this with and how. The stigma is unfortunate. Trauma-related Attachment Disorder would be a better name for it in my opinion! #BorderlinePersonalityDisorder #BPDchat #BPD
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I think part of the experience might be not realizing what's going on while you're going through it? #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @GemmaLuescher @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr My only angry dissociation is when I go into child state then I tend to loudly babble or sometimes throw temper tantrums and bang my head its awful however my other alters are very calm and against physical harm to myself or others #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @beyondBPD18 Hi! Thanks for sharing this... #BPDChat
bpdvideo @bpdvideo important to understand how this works....
bpdvideo @bpdvideo RT @CarlDunnJr: Have you experienced dissociation? How would you explain dissociation to someone else? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr #bpdchat 3/3 as my mindfullness skill grew I became aware of some disociating, where it seemed i went deep inside myself. it was very peaceful. I could still hear people talking but didnt care about anything anymore. It was a V peaceful state it was V tempting to stay dissociated
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr What do you think you look to others while you're dissociating? How could I tell you're dissociating? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @dogmumstace @shoutywhisper Thanks for sharing this... #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I think it's not uncommon that someone feels like they must be the only one experiencing these things. #BPDChat Do you feel alone when dealing with dissociation? Have you been able to talk to others about the experience? #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @shoutywhisper @dogmumstace @CarlDunnJr Yes I have same sort of thing though luckily I don't remember much of my only true psychotic episode which was isolation induced I remember what happens when I split from my own memory in the background as well as through the alters memory mine is more spiritual #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @NeverwillFall17 @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr I didn't split into different alters but I have been dissociating since I was a toddler which also got me into some strange situations. So you can imagine at least 40 years on and off of dissociative states. They hit a point of no return shortly before I was 40 #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr How young were you when you first starting experiencing dissociation? #BPDChat
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr I’m pretty sure I look tired, distant and somewhat drunk. I avoid eye contact, give short answers and bring up stuff that make no sense in the situation. #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr I mean that is the alter nice to you does it respect your morals your friends your safety does it comfort you?? #BPDchat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr Apparently, according to my Dad, I look like I'm "away with the fairies". It's obvious I'm not present. #BPDChat

bpdvideo @bpdvideo RT @shoutywhisper:
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr It feels kind of odd. I wouldn't describe it as unpleasant but it's not great either. It's confusing. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Luciek11K That's good to let people know. How would you explain to someone else on the chat to cope with dissociation? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr #bpdchat Sometimes you know cause I tell you Im fighting it. Often I just do a tiny repetative motion w/ my hand, like rubbing my thumb against the side of my finger, & when I come out I often say "I'm sorry I've lost my train of thought", or "could you please repeat that?" Ect..
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Do you have the experience of "losing time" when you're dissociating? How big a problem is it? #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr I think it started quite young for me with the traumas I went through it was the only way my brain coped. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Afterwards, do you have amnesia (don't remember) anything that happened while you were dissociated? #BPDChat
Theresa @theresaetcetera TW: flashbacks, dissociation I just wrote this in response to a question on today’s #BPDChat and... I’m sorry but that’s just horrific. I feel awful for myself tbh. And I think that’s justified right now because I don’t often feel it.
🏴☠️G-Anne🏴☠️ @gacossey #BPDChat I definitely feel detached, going thru the motions, putting on my happy face. Most recently was just at my daughter’s high school graduation. I thought I’d be a crying mess. Seems kinda hazy now..realized my brain was helping me handle it
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I would think a priority when you notice you are dissociating is to keep yourself safe? Do you have any suggestions for others about how to keep safe when dissociating? #BPDChat
jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @NeverwillFall17 @CarlDunnJr Oh, yes!! I feel less alone listening to this kind of music. Although, the opposite sometimes happen, but I assume it’s cause the music takes me on this painful journey of healing, to which I always come out of relieved. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I think there are different forms of dissociation. Anyone dissociate in multiple different ways?#BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @NeverwillFall17 @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr I think it is part of my normal that I just never had a name for. If you don't have a name for it how the hell do you explain it to anybody. To get the psychologists to help you get the meds to help cope with it. I needed meds more for anxiety levels set off by triggers #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Do you experience "emotional numbing" when you dissociate? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Do you have coping skills to deal with dissociating? How did you find coping skills to deal with dissociation? #BPDChat
NeverwillFall17 @Neverwillfall16 RT @helovampirehoe: @NeverwillFall17 @CarlDunnJr Oh, yes!! I feel less alone listening to this kind of music. jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @CarlDunnJr I used to have that a lot!! It got to a point where I’d find letters and pictures I’d made/took while dissociating. Now every time I dissociate it’s a short experience and I remember almost everything. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr How would you explain coping with dissociation to others who want a way to cope? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @GemmaLuescher: @NeverwillFall17 @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr I think it is part of my normal that I just never had a name for. jobu tupak¡ @helovampirehoe @KCapoodle @NeverwillFall17 @CarlDunnJr I’m confused lol. I assumed they meant another body (eg soul) by “alter”. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Luciek11K Thanks for sharing these... #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Do you have any grounding techniques you recommend to cope with dissociation? #BPDChat

whew @tropicalsadboi RT @CarlDunnJr: Do you have coping skills to deal with dissociating? How did you find coping skills to deal with dissociation? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr #BPDChat - @blaisemd & Gillian Galen @gillianpsyd suggest "balancing on one foot" as a grounding technique if you are experiencing Depersonalization. (from "Coping with BPD").
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr #bpdchat I learned skills in DBT skills classes. The big ones to help with disociation were 'mindfulness' (awareness that it was happening) & 'willingness' (choosing 2 come out of disociation, or fight going into it, when disociating seemed a peaceful alternative 2 being present)
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr Since I have a range of completely blacking out( like I did as a teenager when my friends played violent movies at sleepovers or when we were at the movies) to flashbacks, to destroying things and SH. And then there were sort of the blank stares in between #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @KellyannNavarre Hi. That's a good list. Thanks for sharing. #BPDChat
bpdvideo @bpdvideo RT @CarlDunnJr: "A Family Guide to BPD" videos show how people w/ BPD & their families recover from BPD. @bpdvideo #BPDChat #SPSM https://t.co/3zliK0hTqR
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr What helps? Grounding techniques - using physical sensations: hold ice, wash face with water, touch something. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Aguirre & Galen suggest working on noticing when you dissociate, then mindfully (if possible) figuring out what you do when you dissociate, then figure out grounding techniques that work for you, and if you need to, reach out to someone else for help. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @cmackenzies A medical ID might be quite helpful. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr I would explain to some psychologists that I remember going into those staring episodes in a department store as a toddler, like I couldn't speak or hear anything going on around me and then I would snap out of it and realize I lost my mom-I got spankings for it too. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr What helps? Grounding techniques - using physical sensations: Eating - sour candy, hot sauce, garlic, mints... What else? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Someone suggested that playing a video game helps them with dissociation. Do you think that would work for you? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr What are you able to do when you are dissociated? Could you call someone for support, or no? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Connection can help: Name things you see in the room, name what you can sense with your 5 senses. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr "Ice plunge": Put your face in a sink full of icy water for more than 30 seconds. (cover area around your eyes). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr It's about finding what works for you; different things work for different people. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr How do you think mental health professionals should be trained about dissociation? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr What do you think has been left out of this discussion of dissociation? #BPDChat
Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr #bpdchat when fighting disociation while driving I verbalize everything I'm seeing, thinking, doing (eg. "Yellow light. Slowing down. Red light. Checking mirror. Stopping. Blue car ahead. Black van behind.") And so on. Its Very effective for me.
stace @stace81221147 #bpdchat twitter have blocked my account (its stace the dog mum) because I was being active for the first time in weeks. I can't unlock it because I changed my phone number since I started the account. Doh. @CarlDunnJr

Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr TW ---- One of my other forms of dissociation would be the feeling of paralysis in my legs after a sporting event. ( I would have to hear gunshots constantly for the races- triggering strange lack of sensation in my legs in the middle of the night) #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @KCapoodle This sounds really helpful. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @fluffymangoe Hm. I'm not sure. Anyone else have a thought about this? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @ariel_mondkind Great tip. That makes sense. (I'm guessing showering in cold water would be very effective, if you could stand it). #BPDChat

Kitten.capoodle @KCapoodle @CarlDunnJr I've been considering getting a smart watch with a scheduled vibration setting to encourage body movement.... I think it will also alert me to be aware if I'm disociating when it goes off. It was actually my husbands idea that it could help me. I think it could work. #bpdchat
