Icebreaker: What are your associations with "Mindfulness"? Do you have experience with mindfulness? What kind? Has it been helpful to you (or not)? #BPDChat

@_freedomandhope Hi! That's good to hear. I have ADHD so my biggest challenge is to remember to practice mindfulness... But when I do, it has been very helpful to me to connect as directly as possible with what's happening right now. #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr I used to think it was all about sitting quietly trying not to think. I've learnt you can do things mindfully rather than just sit there and fully be in the moment. I've found it hard to practice but think it could help me #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@KellyannNavarre Hi! Mindfulness can be so simple but I think many of us struggle with it - it's difficult to put into practice. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@bpdshit1 Hi! How do you suggest people use mindfulness when they're in crisis? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
RT @Meandmymhmatter: @CarlDunnJr I used to think it was all about sitting quietly trying not to think. I've learnt you can do things mindfully rather than just sit there and fully be in the moment. I've found it hard to practice but think it could help me #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Meandmymhmatter Hi! That's an important realization that you can do thing (activities, etc.) mindfully. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
RT @Artful_Kimmie:
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter
@CarlDunnJr Yep. Especially as I hear a voice so sitting quietly actually gets distressing. But physically doing things mindfully is much better. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Artful_Kimmie Hi! That's great! I hope you'll mention more about body scans and the breathe bubble (Calm app). I know about body scans (and find them useful) but I'd like to also hear about the other. #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@ajcan36 Hi! I hope you'll talk we get to the main topic about how you use mindfulness when in crisis. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@samiaNstuff Hi! It's great that you're able to be aware that's not particularly helpful and find something else to do. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@LiluWheeler @bpdshit1 Hi! I'd be interested in how others are using mindfulness in crisis. I agree distraction methods are one type of activity that can be very helpful when in crisis. #BPDChat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Meandmymhmatter Hi! Doing an activity mindfully that focuses your attention outside yourself can be very helpful. Also, for people who've been affected by trauma, focusing inside may be uncomfortable. A good alternative for them is to focus on an activity or thing outside themselves. #BPDChat

@lisjt90 Hi! I'm sorry to hear that was an awful experience. I hope you'll find something in our topic today that is helpful. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@LiluWheeler @bpdshit1 I'm interested why that is. I hope you can expand on that when we move to the main topic. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Luciek11K @Meandmymhmatter Some people find doing an activity (one example would be yoga) mindfully to be helpful. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
I've already fallen behind in the chat. Lol - I guess it's a good time to move to our (related) main topic for today. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Tonight's topic is... What is Mindfulness and Can it be Helpful to You? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@KellyannNavarre @LiluWheeler @bpdshit1 I guess it's good to mention that DBT think of mindfulness as the core skill. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
One definition of Mindfulness (from Jon Kabat-Zinn) is "Paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally". #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Another definition of Mindfulness is: “awareness without judgment of what is, via direct and immediate experience.” #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
If you've practiced Mindfulness, has it helped you? In what way? If it's been difficult or not helpful, please tell us your experience. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Does anyone here have experience practicing Mindfulness? What's been your experience? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
2) Being present at each current moment in your life... Reducing the amount of time you are not present. Practicing one-mindfulness. Reducing distractions. 2/2 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
A couple of ways I personally find mindfulness helpful. ... 1) Seeing what's right in front of your nose... Being able to focus on and concentrate on what's right in front of you. 1/2 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Luciek11K Yes, I think being able to slow down and be mindful of your current emotion can be very valuable. If you're able to know what emotion you're feeling then you can understand what valuable information that emotion is trying to communicate to you. #BPDChat

NOTE: There are 5 videos of Marsha Linehan teaching essential DBT skills (you can buy them for a fee - see https://t.co/vPd8KyFKVP). Fortunately, there are free transcripts of all 5 videos here. #BPDChat 2/2 https://t.co/YfJYhDldAN
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
a VERY helpful introduction to Mindfulness from a DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) perspective, read the following transcript of a video of Marsha Linehan teaching mindfulness. #BPDChat 1/2 https://t.co/eAc2tcPoJc
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@_freedomandhope This is what someone else was mentioning - being mindful of current emotion - figuring out from these clues what emotion you're having and knowing what info that emotion is communicating. (Then, if appropriate, changing your emotion with the skill of Opposite Action). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Save this link! Cindy Sanderson wrote this helpful introduction to Mindfulness. #BPDChat https://t.co/eNAbDSjTby
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Forms of mindfulness have been practiced in both Eastern and Western traditions. Today, mindfulness is a port of several current psychotherapies, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you spend time thinking about the past or worrying about the future? Not being in the present moment? #BPDChat 2/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
For many people, thinking about the past or worrying about the future increases their suffering. #BPDChat 1/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Does anyone have specific questions about Mindfulness? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you have problems at times focusing on one thing? (you are not alone). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Do you have problems at times in being fully in the present moment? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Being in Wise Mind can help us to see things fully & make good decisions. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT talks about 3 states of mind: Emotion Mind, Logical (Rational) Mind, and Wise Mind. #BPDChat 1/3
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Being completely in Emotion Mind or Logical Mind can cause us to not see things fully. #BPDChat 2/3
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@MariaEstrada17 Hi! Thanks for sharing this. I'm really glad to hear you did this. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Practicing mindfulness can help us be more fully present and experience life more fully. #BPDChat
Maria Estrada @MariaEstrada17
@CarlDunnJr Mindfulness definitely helps me stop and breath when feeling an intense emotion. #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT says there are 3 What skills and 3 How skills for Mindfulness. 1/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'What' skills: Observe (without words), Describe, Participate. 2/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'How' skills: Nonjudgmentally, One-mindfully, Effectively. 3/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'What' skill: Observe - just notice what happening in the present moment, without words or labels. 4/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'What' skill: Describe - Attach words to the experience, stay with the facts, don't use judgments. 5/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'How' skill: Effectively. Do the activity in the most effective way. (Don't insist on being right, rather, be effective). 9/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'What' skill: Participate - Become part of the action or activity. Don't just observe from the sidelines, throw yourself into the activity, 6/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'How' skill: Nonjudgmentally. Without judgment. Just describe (just the facts). 7/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
DBT 'How' skill: One-mindfully. Concentrate on only one thing. No multi-tasking (multi-tasking is less effective). 8/9 #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
In DBT, people often find a "small" activity, such as walking around the block, brushing one's teeth, washing dishes, or taking a shower, that they can work on practicing mindfully. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
Mindfulness can be helpful when we're used to not being present in the current moment - "Now". Has anyone found mindfulness helpful with dissociation? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
A highly recommended book is about mindfulness (and BPD) is: 'Mindfulness for BPD' by Blaise Aguirre & Gillian Galen. Lots of mindfulness exercises! - @blaisemd @GillianPsyD #BPDChat

RT @MariaEstrada17: @CarlDunnJr Mindfulness definitely helps me stop and breath when feeling an intense emotion. #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@MariaEstrada17 This is good to hear. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@Luciek11K Yes, my concentration is also not so good at times. (ADHD). When I remember to practice mindfulness it helps. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@EllieRAA Hi! I hear you. I think remembering one of the DBT 'How' skills: "One-mindfully" helps me. No multi-tasking. Just do one thing at a time. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@_freedomandhope I think there are grounding techniques that help some people. (I was curious if anyone found mindfulness helpful or not helpful... so thanks for explaining). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@IamCarrieagain Hi! That's great to hear! That may be a good suggestion for other people. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr
@EllieRAA I've found if you can practice mindfulness regularly the constant stream of thoughts either reduces or slows down. (The challenge for me is to remember to stick with practicing mindfulness so this can happen). #BPDChat

Mindfulness is a powerful skills to use for the upcoming holiday season, particularly at family gatherings. Looking forward to hearing how #BPDchat members try to incorporate it in the coming weeks.
