@CarlDunnJr I had difficulty with mindfulness in the beginning. Therapists would try visual techniques- like imagining I am at the beach or something. Then I did a special type of therapy where I had to figure out my stress levels and what I did that helped or made it worse #BPDChat

@MinogueFanily Yes, mindfulness (as in, "focusing on your inner thoughts & feelings") can feel upsetting or unsafe for people who have been through trauma. Many people find it helpful to focus on something outside themselves. Yoga is an example of an "outward" activity. #BPDchat

@CarlDunnJr Music is my biggest go to for mindfulness. - I need those headphones if I am getting triggered or overwhelmed. Music is multi sensory for me. I feel it through to my feet and fingers. Then I also grab the chewing gum or the multivitamin brausual tablet on my tongue. #BPDchat

If I were to become a coach I would offer this technique to others struggling with. #PTSD even little kids who are traumatized could do that exercise #BPDChat

It takes practice though. The first few times I think I did maybe 30 seconds of mindfulness, my mind wandered so much. #BPDChat

My other form of mindfulness is in painting. That process I learned to paint with the opposite hand that I am used to using. I fought the process then suddenly it clicked. But if I start painting I get into a zone. I find it with my son too-he settles down when he paints #BPDChat

When I could finally put on the brakes made a big difference. Then a determination to do something nice for yourself makes it work longer . Having a buddy helps too- to bring each other up #bpdchat

And imaginging I was an alien who had no idea what a table is, or what a rock does or doesn’t do, it helped me focus. #BPDChat

It can be overwhelming for me to do all five sense at once so I worked within myself & what I liked. #BPDChat

@law_lori Hi. Yes! Finding an activity such as washing the dishes (by hand) and doing it mindfully is a great way to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness in DBT is usually done with the eyes open, since you walk through world & do things with the eyes open. #BPDchat

It's like needing audiobooks or running a movie or program to stop my anxious thoughts because I had to concentrate on the movie. Or the story. Was doing it before I realized it was considered mindfulness. It helped me cope with some tough nights. #bpdchat

There are 8 or so emotions: fear, sadness, anger, love, joy, guilt, shame, etc. You feel these in your body - they give you vital information. I felt like my thoughts and emotions were not able to be separated even if I wanted to. I found chain analysis really helped me tease some of it apart and then practicing body scans really helped me too. So hard. #BPDChat
