Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @shoutywhisper @ames302 @FieldingPolly @EmilyThorn2018 Not at all. I'm glad to hear from you. Maybe we'll start chat a little early every week? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Before #BPDChat : I recommend Karyn Hall's & Melissa Cook's book: "The Power of Validation" @mindfulnow https://t.co/5OLoxf9duT

Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher One thing I forgot- do not make a fire in a wood stove when it's really windy- your place just fills up with smoke- not thinking straight- obviously worn out after my time with my son. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr HIGHLY recommended: 'Coping with BPD' by Blaise Aguirre @blaisemd & Gillian Galen @gillianpsyd #BPDChat https://t.co/PVrDkK650Y
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Before #BPDChat : A favorite book: 'Mindfulness for BPD' by Blaise Aguirre @blaisemd & Gillian Galen @gillianpsyd https://t.co/nqBtOmZIyI
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Before #BPDChat : I need to really HIGHLIGHT this book today: It has mindfulness exercises for all sorts of BPD-related issues. 'Mindfulness for BPD' by Blaise Aguirre @blaisemd & Gillian Galen @gillianpsyd https://t.co/nqBtOmZIyI
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 Don't worry about trying to understand the mindfulness concept- the more you push the tougher the wall seems. Suddenly it will make sense. It may not be today or tomorrow. Maybe you need a kinetic experience for your brain to finally understand. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Before #BPDChat : If you're in the U.S., put this number in your phone: Natl. Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 1/2

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Hello and welcome to #BPDChat if you feel affected by tonight's chat please contact your country's helpline at https://t.co/GtlNdoZpFo
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr If you're going to post something that may affect others please consider using TW (for Trigger warning) to give others a heads up. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Icebreaker: What are your associations with "Mindfulness"? Do you have experience with mindfulness? What kind? Has it been helpful to you (or not)? What confuses you about mindfulness? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Oops! What a great example of "UN-mindfulness". I spaced out the start of #BPDChat until 3:06 (my time). Welcome, everyone!

Veggie Patti 🏃♀️🌱🌸🥑🥒🥦 @veggiepattiruns @CarlDunnJr When I hear mindfulness, I think of meditation. But, I realize it is so much more than that. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @wayne24536203 Hi! Thanks for checking in. Sorry you're not feeling great. Please take care of yourself. (Reach out for help if you need to). Be well, my friend. #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @veggiepattiruns: @CarlDunnJr When I hear mindfulness, I think of meditation. But, I realize it is so much more than that. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @veggiepattiruns Hi! Yes, mention this when we talk more about the topic. It's a good point. Mindfulness is often different than medication. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly Hi, Polly. What helped you with learning mindfulness? Do you remember? #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @janeymachine THIS!!!! I have ADHD, so practicing mindfulness is easier than making mindfulness something I do consistently (every day). #BPDChat
Meandmymhmatters BA (Hons) @Meandmymhmatter @CarlDunnJr I used to think mindfulness was about being calm but have learnt its more about being present even though it may be a painful experience. I've struggled with mindfulness but can see it's benefits. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @janeymachine @ames302 Yes, I think this is a great point. You can watch your thoughts as they come & go. #BPDchat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @mindtreeDBT Hi! Have you found mindfulness helpful? In what way? #BPDchat
💜 Jiska ⁷💜 @Jiskasixx Does someone know any good advices against jealousy and the fear of losing someone?... #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @FieldingPolly:
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @CarlDunnJr Mindfulness has been a big help to me. It’s helped me get through some really tough anxiety and has even helped me from having full blown panic attacks. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr I had difficulty with mindfulness in the beginning. Therapists would try visual techniques- like imagining I am at the beach or something. Then I did a special type of therapy where I had to figure out my stress levels and what I did that helped or made it worse #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @MinogueFanily Yes, mindfulness (as in, "focusing on your inner thoughts & feelings") can feel upsetting or unsafe for people who have been through trauma. Many people find it helpful to focus on something outside themselves. Yoga is an example of an "outward" activity. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr Music is my biggest go to for mindfulness. - I need those headphones if I am getting triggered or overwhelmed. Music is multi sensory for me. I feel it through to my feet and fingers. Then I also grab the chewing gum or the multivitamin brausual tablet on my tongue. #BPDchat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Justaceya Hi! Welcome to the chat. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 I would do it again to see where I am on that life line now. I am so much calmer now and hardly dissociate anymore. If I were to become a coach I would offer this technique to others struggling with. #PTSD even little kids who are traumatized could do that exercise #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @voicenotsilent @Justaceya Hi! Welcome to the chat. #BPDchat
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr I had this issue a lot in the beginning too, so I acknowledge the thought & bring my attention back to whatever mindfulness task I’m trying to do. It takes practice though. The first few times I think I did maybe 30 seconds of mindfulness, my mind wandered so much. #BPDChat
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr No (thankfully). I am rarely in a chill place when I use mindfulness. It’s mindfulness that has helped my actually get to that place. I often start in a place of high anxiety. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr This is great! Let's keep talking... I'm going to introduce the main topic, which is..... "Mindfulness"!! Ha... (Surprise!)... #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Tonight's topic is.... What is Mindfulness and Can it be Helpful to You? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @FieldingPolly:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly @GemmaLuescher @shoutywhisper @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 This is a great point, Polly. I'm glad to hear it helped you with dissociation. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher My other form of mindfulness is in painting. That process I learned to paint with the opposite hand that I am used to using. I fought the process then suddenly it clicked. But if I start painting I get into a zone. I find it with my son too-he settles down when he paints #BPDChat

Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @GemmaLuescher @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 Ohhh I 💕rocks and stones. I have one in each of my jackets. I find them to be so grounding. And one of them was one of the first things I was able to do mindfully. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly @GemmaLuescher @shoutywhisper @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 Ha. Actually, you've been very helpful, Polly. I'll hope you'll keep commenting. #BPDchat

Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr NOTE: There are 5 videos of Marsha Linehan teaching essential DBT skills (you can buy them for a fee - see the link). Fortunately, there are free transcripts of all 5 videos here. #BPDChat 2/2 https://t.co/YfJYhDldAN
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @Artful_Kimmie:
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @janeymachine @shoutywhisper @ames302 @CarlDunnJr When I first started practicing mindfulness a tip that helped me for observing thoughts and putting attention on an object, like say a stone or flower, was to approach it as if I were an alien. Someone who knew nothing of what a stone was. Helped me focus on the object. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @Artful_Kimmie That sounds as though it's very helpful to you. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @FieldingPolly @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 #TW Yes that was a scary part about dissociating - the self harm aspect. When I could finally put on the brakes made a big difference. Then a determination to do something nice for yourself makes it work longer . Having a buddy helps too- to bring each other up #bpdchat

Queen of Something @law_lori #BPDCHAT Mindfulness has helped me a great deal. It’s difficult to achieve, but the more time you spend in that state, the easier it is to achieve.
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @shoutywhisper @JourneyFromBPD @FieldingPolly @ames302 No worries. I'm behind the chat timeline, too. It's a good thing chat is going faster right now. #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @shoutywhisper:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr For myself, I started with just regular objects around the room, or in my vicinity, and just describing them (in my head, or out loud if I’m alone). And imaginging I was an alien who had no idea what a table is, or what a rock does or doesn’t do, it helped me focus. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr @FieldingPolly @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 Rock and stones can have a good symbolism for people- it could mean being grounded or that they have longevity and stability.- I love carving stones. ( especially in summer out in the garden) #BPDChat
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr Once I got practiced with just everyday, regular objects, I expanded how I did mindfulness to guided images, like on the Insight app, or including my other senses. It can be overwhelming for me to do all five sense at once so I worked within myself & what I liked. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @FieldingPolly @shoutywhisper @CarlDunnJr @ames302 @EmilyThorn2018 Exactly!!!!!!each person has their own symbolism, memories, associations, the exercise is so personal.- what got me was the thermal bath in the cold of winter- not allowed to go if I SH into a pool right? #BPDChat
Queen of Something @law_lori I learned mindfulness by doing the dishes by hand. It just clicked and now I don’t mind doing the dishes lol double bonus #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr In Marsha Linehan's transcript (I just tweeted the link), she talks about being "mindless" is as thought you are walking across your living room with the lights off (bumping into furniture) - and being mindful as walking across the living room with the lights on. #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @law_lori: I learned mindfulness by doing the dishes by hand. It just clicked and now I don’t mind doing the dishes lol double bonus #BPDChat

#DepressedWhileBlack @DepressedWBlack RT @Artful_Kimmie:
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @janeymachine @shoutywhisper @ames302 @CarlDunnJr It was extremely helpful to me. I was surprised how much it took me away from my thinking. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @law_lori Hi. Yes! Finding an activity such as washing the dishes (by hand) and doing it mindfully is a great way to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness in DBT is usually done with the eyes open, since you walk through world & do things with the eyes open. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @law_lori I love doing dishes by hand- the warmth of the soapy water, and the motions to clean the dishes, and you get something done.#bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @shoutywhisper:
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @janeymachine @Justaceya @ames302 @CarlDunnJr Not silly at all. They become so intertwined it can be hard to separate them. I still work on that myself. For myself I know I’m probably dealing with an emotion if I can feel it physically in my body. Like when I’m anxious I feel the butterflies in my stomach. #BPDChat
#DepressedWhileBlack @DepressedWBlack RT @CarlDunnJr: I highly recommend this new resource for developing your own safety plan. This is useful for anyone who finds themselves in emotional distress and/or has thoughts of suicide. (See link below) #BPDChat #SPSM https://t.co/Pc5RklMAT3
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @shoutywhisper @JourneyFromBPD @FieldingPolly @ames302 Yes, I'll try to add a link to the Wakelet collections I make of tonight's tweets - reading the tweets from such an archive can be easier. (I usually put out a link within 24 to 48 hours). #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher It's like needing audiobooks or running a movie or program to stop my anxious thoughts because I had to concentrate on the movie. Or the story. Was doing it before I realized it was considered mindfulness. It helped me cope with some tough nights. #bpdchat
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @janeymachine Agreed. Focusing on tasks like chores are great practice for me for mindfulness. Although I still struggle with trying to keep my mind from wandering too much. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @shoutywhisper @janeymachine @Justaceya @ames302 I'm glad you asked this question. I'm no expert - here's my thoughts... There are 8 or so emotions: fear, sadness, anger, love, joy, guilt, shame, etc. You feel these in your body - they give you vital information. Thoughts can be all sort of mental constructions:... #BPDchat 1/2
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher Some people consider watching Bob Ross paint is like practicing mindfulness- the way he talks about painting clouds or how he animates the tones of the brush strokes for "happy" little trees, or by pulling the spachtel the get the effect of snow on the side of a mountain #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @shoutywhisper @janeymachine @Justaceya @ames302 .....Thoughts can be thought of as mental constructions: "I'm getting close to a door." "I'm a bad person". "I'm a good person". "I'm a green person" (this is probably a thought that's untrue). Thoughts are not necessarily facts or factual. #BPDchat 2/2
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr One definition of Mindfulness (from Jon Kabat-Zinn) is "Paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally". #BPDChat
Just Me @JourneyFromBPD @shoutywhisper @janeymachine @Justaceya @ames302 @CarlDunnJr I totally sympathize. This was a big struggle for me too. I felt like my thoughts and emotions were not able to be separated even if I wanted to. I found chain analysis really helped me tease some of it apart and then practicing body scans really helped me too. So hard. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr If you've practiced Mindfulness, has it helped you? In what way? (I know many people have already shared). #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr For many people, thinking about the past or worrying about the future increases their suffering. Do you spend time thinking about the past or worrying about the future? Not being in the present moment? #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Does anyone have specific questions about Mindfulness? #BPDChat
Veggie Patti 🏃♀️🌱🌸🥑🥒🥦 @veggiepattiruns @CarlDunnJr I have practiced ! I had to do this for my #DBT assignment. I chose to take a mindful bubble bath ! #BPDChat https://t.co/GuqUw9qg6r
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Do you have problems at times focusing on one thing or being in the present moment? (you are not alone). Practicing mindful this week might be helpful. #BPDChat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @veggiepattiruns A bubble bath sounds like a terrific mindfulness activity. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr Isn't it just dreadful at times? It amazes me how harsh I was on myself. But I think some of that horrible self talk was learned somewhere by someone else when we were younger- we picked up on that negative stuff our parents would say to us. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher When I was at my mom's this summer I had to retreat a lot to the bedroom to stop the chatter from my mom so I wouldn't internalize it. #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @janeymachine @veggiepattiruns I like this idea a lot. Do you have a suggestion for the homework assignment this time? (I noticed someone attached a list of mindfulness activities to an earlier tweet). #BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Covfefe and Crudités lover Chuck Musholt @cmusholt RT @GemmaLuescher: Some people consider watching Bob Ross paint is like practicing mindfulness- the way he talks about painting clouds or how he animates the tones of the brush strokes for "happy" little trees, or by pulling the spachtel the get the effect of snow on the side of a mountain #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Being mindful allows us to directly experience our lives, to "slow things down", to understand better why we act the way we do. #BPDChat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr My mom has a low self esteem, and I internalized it as a kid- it was just me and her for a few years. But I internalized what Drs told me, as well as an abusive stepdad and then abusive husband.#BPDchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr @shoutywhisper @Borderline_OK @JourneyFromBPD @FieldingPolly @ames302 Hi. Sorry you're overwhelmed right now. Please don't worry about letting us down - I'm glad you're here as part of our group. Your questions have been invaluable in helping others. I hope you'll tweet or DM me to ask questions, so I can give feedback. Don't give up. #BPDchat
Gemma Luescher-Verseckas @GemmaLuescher @FieldingPolly @ames302 @CarlDunnJr I think when you are given permission to listen to your gut instinct again, it's amazing what happens- you stop listening to the junk and start being kind to yourself again and accomplish great things. - like writing books #bpdchat
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr I noticed several people having a lot of difficulty with mindfulness tonight. I hope each of you will continue asking your questions on #BPDChat. I or others will try to answer your questions & help. I believe everyone can understand & benefit from mindfulness. Don't give up yet.
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr RT @janeymachine:
Carl Dunn @CarlDunnJr Yes, that's great! I'll try to post her tweets with the list(s) again for people. I'll also tweet out the link for the transcript of the DBT mindfulness video again. #BPDchat |
