Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
#Diversealz on the hour chats about dementia, corona virus and care homes with dementia in mind of course. Aware that some folk will be clapping to applaud care workers, nurses, health professionals.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Good day wherever you are and welcome to #diversealz here to talk about dementia, coronavirus and care homes. We are clapping by the way in support of and a way to give thanks and show respect for care and health workers.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
We are going straight into question 1 even though we have plenty of questions in mind. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question 1 and for folks who have hats bestowed on them (and remember who you are!) Where do we start? Pose a question around this, that is! #dementia, coronavirus and care homes. Questions about forgetting, remembering have gone and will be addressed later #diversealz

Question 1: Where do we begin as in, please pose a question around this area. Questions around remembering/forgetting already posed throughout the week and will be addressed. #diversealz

Timely that we are chatting about this topic tonight for although there are going to be many concerns raised, there is also much support for the work many staff in care homes are doing #diversealz

As always, we have stacks of questions but this is one of those chats, where it should be user led. Though being #diversealz, will be chiming in! OOH a question.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@journeyofcareM Yes. Amazing. Did mention that to some care homes a few weeks ago along the lines of will staff be staying there and meant it as a viable question too. Now see. Not the Sheffield folk though #diversealz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Question via @helenfindlay asks if needs of care staff have been left behind. This will fall into regard/respect for care staff category and work they do. #diversealz. Who else is posing questions? One minute more....

Question 2: Should care homes be on total lockdown? #diversealz #opinions
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
@TommyTommytee18 Welcome. Our question 2 is a bit contentious asking if care homes should be on lockdown. #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Asking if care homes should be on lockdown? Seems a contentious issue. Why for care home staff go home and return to work; reports that relatives can enter care home if relative/person they support is seriously ill...#diversealz
Bikerwise @bikerwise
@DiverseAlz #diversealz I do not have anyone in a care home but I think there needs to be difference made between carers and visitors. Many partners or offspring are effectively part of the care team and need to be going in.
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Alternative question 2 is there a case for care homes going on lockdown? #diversealz

Caroline @journeyofcareM
@DiverseAlz My dilemma is do I do a lock down of all adjunct caregivers (PSW's) visiting daily in order to protect my mother (they wear masks/gloves). I can't wing it on my own like I used to & I need to buy food/supplies etc. Maybe not practical hat but philosophical one ?#DiverseAlz
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
@DiverseAlz A2. I’ll answer w/ another question: In US, where even doctors now are employees of health systems & insurers, as well as in care homes, who has oversight over the actions/decisions & accountability of execs & administrators of these organizations? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Salient point made by @bikerwise about lockdown in care homes saying in nutshell that carers "are effectively part of the care team and need to be going in". Indeed some form partnership approaches and help. @helenfindlay raises questions of protective clothing. #diversealz

For sure, where carers/partners/supporters provide valuable help with their relatives perhaps care homes could reach out if hygiene protocols are followed. Perhaps goes back to @nursesKidONE point #diversealz putting simplistically about decision making, who makes them. Why?
Caroline @journeyofcareM
@nursesKidONE They don't. Any crappy care home struggling pre Covid 19 just got nightmarishly worse. And now behind closed doors . No oversight ! Families are their only hope to stay connected & maybe alive. Grim scenarios await. #DiverseAlz

Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
There are great care homes as @TommyTommytee18 mentions. Think we need to hear more good news stories about how they keep in touch with relatives though it will be a two way street. But there'll be anxieties especially if there are underlying health issues or sickness #diversealz

@helenfindlay @theguardian This article highlights some of the points we've raised such as short staffed and so argument about volunteering as in family members/supporters comes to fore, and how staff do not know who entering home and in home may be carrying the virus. Question 4: What are some of the ways to stay in touch at a time of social isolation? @TommyTommytee18 has mentioned Zoom...#diversealz Ah @WendyPMitchell arranged a virtual cup of tea session or to that effect. Could those work? One care home is emailing photos to relatives
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE
@TommyTommytee18 @hitchmough_paul @PatBroster @louise_langham @thredcic The government followed the recommendations of the care home industry in locking down care homes. There should be public hearings now for more input from “all stakeholders” as they now say. #diversealz

Good question from @nchadborn Technology, communication to relatives: Is this always dependent on local staff, or do some larger companies have policies in place for communication with family in challenging times? #diversealz
Diverse Alzheimers @DiverseAlz
Where one is unable to chat (verbally) must be comforting to know there are photos but also, and this is important, facetime (if can get access). Also videos would say much. On the other side (so to speak) one can send parcels and letters and a singing/dance video! #diversealz

Question 5 Are people aware of the needs of care staff and we will add unpaid carers at this time? This comes down to appreciation, respect, concern they have what they need i.e protective clothing, masks. #diversealz

@nchadborn @DiverseAlz @TommyTommytee18 @WendyPMitchell Maybe in smaller or private pay care homes, but I don’t see this as something that will happen in larger homes serving mainly Medicaid beneficiaries in US , because their profit margins & staffing were already thin. #diversealz
