Hey #dsma, how is everyone?
Chris Memering @zsquaredmama
@DebGreenwood I needed a break from the last discussion question of the quarter with OARS diabetes education. How many open ended questions would you like? And bad when the student has to change the scenario to include correct #language & A1c is a % not a mg/dL. #DSMA

Q1 Nope. not that everyone supported me but most of my family and friends never treated me different #dsma
Molly Johannes @mollyjoh_T1D
Q1: Yes - because sometimes it just gets in the way of my relationships. But also no - OTHER times, like 90% of the time, people in my life forget about it/don’t make a big deal out of it. #DSMA
Diabetes Social Media Advocacy @DiabetesSocMed
I have had other PWD give me a little grief from time to time #dsma
Abby @Abby_Moschell
Q1. I don't think it effects my friendships bc people find out about my diabetes later in the relationship. #dsma
Ryan Dane 🇺🇦 @ryanryeguy89
@DiabetesSocMed Q1. It does a little. My family understands, most of them, that I like to keep a set time when I take my insulin and what I can eat without having to work about going to high. Friends get it more, took some explaining at first. #Dsma
Perry Clanton @paclanton
#dsma A1: Yes. My friends change our lunch destinations due to my limited diet menu. But, after two years of T2D, everyone is used to me now.
Jenn C @JennMamaBear
#DSMA Q1: It effected both good and bad. Everyone has learned more and I feel supported, vut sometimes I self-inflict the burdensome feeling too.

Q2. There are a lot of Adults being dx’d w/ T-1, LADA, T-2, PCOS & Gestational diabetes-How has being dx’d as an adult affected your life? #dsma
@DebGreenwood @DebGreenwood
Yes! #DSMA https://t.co/rZfEI80b0D
Molly Johannes @mollyjoh_T1D
Q2: I can’t really answer this one because I was diagnosed as a child (age 4) and I’m grateful for that sometimes. Because I didn’t have to deal with a traumatic interruption in my life. I just grew up with it. #DSMA

He is probably the BEST social worker ever. Please tell me he works in #Diabetes as we need many more #Mentalhealth workers! #DSMA https://t.co/4LTgDfwjmm

Q1 Not really. Older sister had type 1 too. Had boyfriend say he didn't want to "deal with your medical shit." So that didn't last but diabetes doesn't have a significant attention in my life with others #dsma https://t.co/rEQKs5rZKN
Ryan Dane 🇺🇦 @ryanryeguy89
@DiabetesSocMed Q2. Being dx'd as an adult wasn't bad. I was trying to eat healthy anyway so cutting some things down or completely wasn't bad. It's the hassale of checking blood before every meal, before bed, taking the insulin. It's time consuming. #Dsma.
Perry Clanton @paclanton
#dsma A2: I know this sounds backward, but my life has improved. I lost 96 pounds and eat healthy. I exercise regularly and enjoy doing it. I can do my duty as a (Volunteer) firefighter 100% better.

Q 2.5: Transition to adulthood from childhood with diabetes wasn’t easy. Tough for me to accept new responsibilities in the beginning & I shunned them at times, but I’ve soldiered though it. Adulting isn’t easy but we’ve all gotta do it! #DSMA

Q3. I know it’s hard to explain diabetes to an adult but how do you explain diabetes to a child? Mom or Dad has diabetes. #dsma
Lesley Kimball @poeticlibrarian
Q2 Thank you @MTL613! Dxd as adult was easy in that I had control over many choices (eating, going places, etc.) 1/2 #dsma
Kelly Rawlings, MPH, PWD @KellyRawlings
@MTL613 @Abby_Moschell I think peds endos and adult endos need to job shadow each other. #dsma

A3. I told my daughter when she was 3 & saw me taking my insulin. It took about 3 yrs. She worried I was sick. #dsma
Molly Johannes @mollyjoh_T1D
Q3: It’s hard to explain diabetes to a kid, so using simple terms is best. Whenever a little kid notices & asks about my pump, I tell them it has medicine in it to keep me healthy. I tell them they can touch it too, which always makes them feel important! #DSMA

Chris Memering @zsquaredmama
@KellyRawlings @MTL613 @Abby_Moschell That's a cool thought. I am enthralled with the concept of transition endo practices, specifically geared to the 16-25 year olds. & I love that Duke Peds will keep patients through college. #DSMA
@DebGreenwood @DebGreenwood
Wow! what a great outlook! Congrats to you! #DSMA https://t.co/1EGx4hKMAr

Q3. My daughter just accepted tasks relating to T1D-had no idea that others didn't check bg... Then she was dxd at 3. #dsma
Kelly Rawlings, MPH, PWD @KellyRawlings
Q3 I've always found it much easier to explain to kids. They tend to have darn good nonjudgmental curiosity #dsma I love Justice Sotomayor's take on discussing w/ kids: https://t.co/jsKDiR1KnZ #dsma https://t.co/Upa7ozYcBA
Abby @Abby_Moschell
@DebGreenwood You are so right and I love her to death but I feel like she failed me in my transition to adult world because I have this want for my new dr to be like her. #dsma

Perry Clanton @paclanton
#dsma A3: I explain that my body is different. I can't eat the cake or the ice cream, but can celebrate the birthday party just the same. Then I tell them my diet makes me run faster :)

@MTL613 So far in my adult experience I feel like my dr has done nothing to help me in my clinic visits making me not want to visit. Probably not helping my A1c but it went down 0.1 last time in much surprise from me. #dsma
@DebGreenwood @DebGreenwood
I’ve heard this from many people. #DSMA https://t.co/V6NxBrWwEm
Chris Memering @zsquaredmama
@Abby_Moschell @MTL613 Do they have a CDE/DE that might be able to help you, if you feel like you need help? I can't really tell from the comment. & nice job on the drop! #DSMA
Abby @Abby_Moschell
@zsquaredmama @KellyRawlings @MTL613 My peds endo kept me until I was done with my first undergrad. I still remember when she told me I had to move into the adult world 2 yrs ago. It was devastating. I had one more appt with her and I never went back :'( because I knew Id cry #dsma
@DebGreenwood @DebGreenwood
That’s fantastic!! Great to hear! #DSMA https://t.co/V1SHg8ZJRG
Kelly Rawlings, MPH, PWD @KellyRawlings
@zsquaredmama @MTL613 @Abby_Moschell And could be interesting--does transition care need to be age-based ... or life stage based... or clinics focused on bolus of extra care at the 4 key times for diabetes education? #dsma
Diabetes Social Media Advocacy @DiabetesSocMed
Q4. Do you or have you ever hid your diabetes from family members, friends or significant others? #dsma
Chris Memering @zsquaredmama
@Abby_Moschell @KellyRawlings @MTL613 I know a lot of PWD who feel that way. Those Peds endos are awesome. Though I know a lot of awesome adult Endos too. #DSMA
Abby @Abby_Moschell
@zsquaredmama @MTL613 I just went to a DE yesterday for the first time in my adult life and for the first time in 10 yrs. it was a great experience and really made me feel better. Slow and steady wins the race! #dsma

@DiabetesSocMed Q4. No never. I even tell strangers. I want people to be aware of what I have in case of emergency. Someone may know what to do to be able to help me. It's a life or death situation for me. I don't want people thinking something else is wrong with me. #Dsma
Chris Memering @zsquaredmama
@KellyRawlings @MTL613 @Abby_Moschell Right, I think life stage makes more sense. However, those ages (actually more of them start at 18) fit a stage. I do see the transitional clinic here keep them longer. #DSMA
Lesley Kimball @poeticlibrarian
@nicki21n Sounds like you are in a similar spot as my hubby... living with 2 T1Ds. I know it isn't easy. #dsma
Kelly Rawlings, MPH, PWD @KellyRawlings
@zsquaredmama @Abby_Moschell @MTL613 Agree. I think that in adult care, the system squeezes all participants into ridiculous units tied to time and money. Great diabetes life and care is an art as well as a science. Coloring outside the lines is needed sometimes. #dsma
Abby @Abby_Moschell
@KellyRawlings @zsquaredmama @MTL613 I think transition care needs to start early and discussed often in a childs life. We all know it is coming but I feel like if it is discussed it wouldn't be as hard of a transition. #dsma
@DebGreenwood @DebGreenwood
That is so good to hear!! #DSMA https://t.co/N3evJOOG81

So I've had this theory recently, mainly because I'm seeing diabetes burnout in these young adults & repeat DKA admissions, what do you think of kids w/DM seeing a therapist at least once a year, even if doing great, to help reduce stigma when they need help? #DSMA

@nicki21n Yes, so many juiceboxes. And Glucolift - couldn't live without that! #dsma
Perry Clanton @paclanton
#dsma A4: Why hide it? It is as much a part of who I am as anything else. I don't highlight it either. Why give that diabetes thing more credit that it deserves? - damn disease.
Kelly Rawlings, MPH, PWD @KellyRawlings
@DebGreenwood Drive-thru clinic basically for refills when all is going well and I'm up-to-date on tests and checks? I've had generally great care, but there were key phases (in hindsight) when extra mental focus needed and "regular care" in adult world not set up well for those. #dsma
Chris Memering @zsquaredmama
@Abby_Moschell @KellyRawlings @MTL613 Kind of like the family practice docs who see people from cradle to grave? The diabetes patho is the same, though the other stuff can be quite different, as well as goals and targets. :) #DSMA
@DebGreenwood @DebGreenwood
At the #GDM clinic I used to work in, all #PWDs on their first visit saw a social worker. They didn’t have to see them every visit but they were assessed, and had a name/face and could set up appointment if wanted. #DSMA https://t.co/a2VBpDY4jF

Abby @Abby_Moschell
@KellyRawlings @zsquaredmama @MTL613 I think something about life in the adult world is I don't EVER see anyone my age in the clinic! I think it would be cool to see other people my age in the clinic so maybe we need more clinics who take certain age groups. #dsma

@MTL613 @KellyRawlings @zsquaredmama I am very much an introvert too but I think I would just be more comfortable in the situation with more people my age. Obviously I understand T2's are going to be older (usually) and T1s are less likely to be around #dsma

@mollyjoh_T1D True. My son is 3 and he gets that juice is medicine and that momma needs medicine via her pump. I’m both proud and heartbroken that he knows when dexcom goes off to ask, “are you ok, momma?” #dsma

My husband has produced dramatic readings by people expressing what it is like to live with a serious chronic illness. Not yet in a clinic, but .... Some art, poetry, open mic (@ChelcieRice) in a waiting room is an experience for which I would volunteer. #dsma

@MTL613 @Abby_Moschell @zsquaredmama I've found that too--much less tech-aware in adult care. So odd. #dsma

Maybe we can do #dsma someday that is a SOC scavenger hunt. It's really enlightening as a person living w/ to realize there is such a "manual" (supplemented w/ so many other resources, of course) for HCPs. It's part of our "contract" in improving health outcomes together. #dsma
