Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1
T1 for the chat–– RT @drlfarrell: T1 How can family carers be encouraged to identify as family carers? #irishmed
carol moore @carolquovadis
T1 #irishmed Society needs to start valuing work of carers. I keep getting told to put parents in nursing home - (not by HCP's )
Matthew Loxton is also on Mastodon @mloxton
T1 what are the benefits of identifying as a carer? Perhaps that's how to start thinking about how to encourage it? #irishmed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1
T1 Carers may hesitate 2self ID for many reasons: two off the bat: not being respected/recognized or not ready for responsibility #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters
Per usual, Rie is late to the chat. I will blame it on #migraine brain. Health educator and professional patient joining you all from the Boston-ish area. #irishmed

T1: Since it is an unpaid job, there is a tendency to not view being a carer as work or worthy of identifying. In an ideal world, we would work to remove social stigma and start paying people a salary for their work as carers.#irishmed

#irishmed T1. I think there are also other contributing factors 1. one sees it as a devotion to a loved one rather than a 'Carer' and 2. Admitting you are a Carer implied your loved one is in need of 'care' or charity, often hard a thing to do in a family situation...
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1
Ans: If isolating, or impacts work (common) Yes. MT @CareAllianceIrl: T1 Do U think is there stigma about being a family carer? #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters
@carolquovadis Agree! Carers work incredibly hard. Yet, society doesn't seem to view being a carer as worthy or worthwhile. It is incredibly frustrating! #IrishMed

Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski
@owen_odoherty I totally agree on the devotion aspect✨ When I was caring for my husband, mother & aunt all at the same time while working full time, it was out of love & devotion. I was not even aware of a term✨ #IrishMed

Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski
Where in the world did my T2 go?! ✨#IrishMed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters
This is spot on! Carers, regardless of whom they are caring for, deserve far more supports than they receive and the ability to access them fully. #IrishMed https://t.co/T8EnEpL2ON

Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski
@KJFinlay OMGosh yes! Throwing paperwork, meds & directives at the carer can become so overwhelming #IrishMed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters
T3: In the quiet moments, many carers can see the positive role they are playing. However, we need to make sure they have respite, that down-time or time away from caring duties. Just hearing "thank you" can make a difference. #irishmed

@CareAllianceIrl I have recently started using mindfulness to help with many areas of my life. I started using it for #pain management, but it is now spilling over into other areas of my life. Mindfulness along with meditation is a favorite of mine for #selfcare. #IrishMed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski
@CareAllianceIrl And nowadays #VR can help play a vital role of sharing with the caree or getaways for the carers ✨ #IrishMed

T3 There is a local support group for men who are caring for wives with dementia –––– These men range from 60s-80s , it's wondeful #irishmed
Owen O'Doherty @owen_odoherty
#irishmed T3. Most Carers see the positive aspects of their role, but we are all human, burnout (combined with creeping isolation) leads to diminishing quality of sleep, etc so tackling and raising awareness & educating on self care will help mental heath. Community helps too

T4 For the LGBTQ community, all manner of challenges RE: caregiving. Firstly , is their relationship/ their standing recognized?? #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters
T4: We are doing terribly at supporting carers from 'non-traditional' *cringe* backgrounds. In both of these instances, social #stigma needs a kicking. I would think that the traveling community would benefit from portable benefits and known & safe resource centers. #irishmed

T5 for the chat ––– RT @drlfarrell: T5 What changes would you like to see for family carers before Carers Week 2019? #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters
T4: LGBTQ+ carers need legal and societal recognition and access to the same supports. In the U.S. I have heard about carers being unable to access their loved ones in hospital. Sadly, we lack adequate #research, as well. #irishmed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1
T5 No doubt some particular desires for the Irish population, but I sense that many of these issues are shared @ the world 1/ #irishmed

T5: In the US, I would like to see more people talking about carers, like we have just done in this chat. I don't expect change overnight, but we must address the stigma of carers being "less than" or overly inflated in value for their "supreme sacrifice" #irishmed
