Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 The handle is : Care Alliance Irl @CareAllianceIrl ~ Hello, thank you for co-hosting #Irishmed , honoring #CarersWeek
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T1 for the chat–– RT @drlfarrell: T1 How can family carers be encouraged to identify as family carers? #irishmed
carol moore @carolquovadis T1 #irishmed Society needs to start valuing work of carers. I keep getting told to put parents in nursing home - (not by HCP's )
Matthew Loxton is also on Mastodon @mloxton T1 what are the benefits of identifying as a carer? Perhaps that's how to start thinking about how to encourage it? #irishmed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T1 Carers may hesitate 2self ID for many reasons: two off the bat: not being respected/recognized or not ready for responsibility #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters Per usual, Rie is late to the chat. I will blame it on #migraine brain. Health educator and professional patient joining you all from the Boston-ish area. #irishmed

Owen O'Doherty @owen_odoherty Hi all. Owen from Carefolk here... Late to the discussion, but great to be here and thanks for organizing.. necessary and timely subject #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters T1: Since it is an unpaid job, there is a tendency to not view being a carer as work or worthy of identifying. In an ideal world, we would work to remove social stigma and start paying people a salary for their work as carers.#irishmed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 Yes, or support grps in real life–– MT @drlfarrell: T1 At minimum, identifying as carer can help link into support groups on #SoMe #irishmed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski @CareAllianceIrl I think it’s wonderful that there’s a #CarersWeek! #IrishMed

Owen O'Doherty @owen_odoherty #irishmed T1. I think there are also other contributing factors 1. one sees it as a devotion to a loved one rather than a 'Carer' and 2. Admitting you are a Carer implied your loved one is in need of 'care' or charity, often hard a thing to do in a family situation...
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 Ans: If isolating, or impacts work (common) Yes. MT @CareAllianceIrl: T1 Do U think is there stigma about being a family carer? #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters @carolquovadis Agree! Carers work incredibly hard. Yet, society doesn't seem to view being a carer as worthy or worthwhile. It is incredibly frustrating! #IrishMed

carol moore @carolquovadis @drlfarrell @mloxton T1 Tut tut doctors suggesting alcohol when so many carers dealing with effects of alcohol abuse 😉 #irishmed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski @owen_odoherty I totally agree on the devotion aspect✨ When I was caring for my husband, mother & aunt all at the same time while working full time, it was out of love & devotion. I was not even aware of a term✨ #IrishMed

Lack of privacy. ... Financial strain. ... Sleep deprivation. ... Being afraid to ask for help. ... Depression & isolation.#IrishMed

carol moore @carolquovadis RT @drlfarrell:
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski I’ve found the lone “soldier syndrome” applicable when it comes to other siblings/family members not wanting to help #IrishMed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T2 KEY point: via @climurphy: Access to respite care: planned short or long term caregiving when the burden of caring too much #irishmed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski Where in the world did my T2 go?! ✨#IrishMed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters This is spot on! Carers, regardless of whom they are caring for, deserve far more supports than they receive and the ability to access them fully. #IrishMed https://t.co/T8EnEpL2ON
carol moore @carolquovadis RT @drlfarrell:
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T2 When caring for a younger person with serious & complex chronic disease such as progressive multiple sclerosis, it takes a team #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters @lisadbudzinski I was thirsty and assumed it was a double serving of #tea and drank it. Sorry Lisa! #IrishMed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T2 A team, not only of carers but also on the medical and social support side: neurologists, nurses, wound care (if paralyzed) etc #irishmed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 RT @CareAllianceIrl:
Owen O'Doherty @owen_odoherty T2 on an individual basis: access to info, access to respite, stress, burnout, gradual isolation creep, and gradual erosion of one's own time (despite best efforts) will continue to be the major issues. #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters T2: Carers face a potential loss of income and even loss of identity if they have to leave the workforce. #mentalhealth strain from isolation, physical and emotional demands are challenges, as well. There is no breaks for carers. #irishmed

Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters @KJFinlay @lisadbudzinski Excellent addition and certainly one that applies to my situation. I think it is easy to question: "who am I?"#IrishMed
carol moore @carolquovadis @drlfarrell T3 Accept as equal partners, our GP very supportive but feel like we a nuisance to many others. Have to say the new integrated services team in Gallagher have good approach though. They ask what we need & acknowledge how difficult it is. #irishmed
carol moore @carolquovadis RT @KJFinlay:
Nóra @nora_eats RT @drlfarrell:
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 @CareAllianceIrl Indeed! Also a major problem with respite care, especially with complex patients (who are not know to the respite home)is poor quality care & worsening of condition. #Irishmed honoring #CarersWeek
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski @KJFinlay OMGosh yes! Throwing paperwork, meds & directives at the carer can become so overwhelming #IrishMed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters T3: In the quiet moments, many carers can see the positive role they are playing. However, we need to make sure they have respite, that down-time or time away from caring duties. Just hearing "thank you" can make a difference. #irishmed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski @22Q11_Ireland It truly does. A heavy toll on the carer’s adrenal & endocrine Systems as well as mental health✨ #IrishMed

Lisa Fields @lisafieldsms RT @drlfarrell:
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters @CareAllianceIrl I have recently started using mindfulness to help with many areas of my life. I started using it for #pain management, but it is now spilling over into other areas of my life. Mindfulness along with meditation is a favorite of mine for #selfcare. #IrishMed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski @CareAllianceIrl And nowadays #VR can help play a vital role of sharing with the caree or getaways for the carers ✨ #IrishMed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T3 There is a local support group for men who are caring for wives with dementia –––– These men range from 60s-80s , it's wondeful #irishmed
Owen O'Doherty @owen_odoherty #irishmed T3. Most Carers see the positive aspects of their role, but we are all human, burnout (combined with creeping isolation) leads to diminishing quality of sleep, etc so tackling and raising awareness & educating on self care will help mental heath. Community helps too

Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T4 For the LGBTQ community, all manner of challenges RE: caregiving. Firstly , is their relationship/ their standing recognized?? #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters T4: We are doing terribly at supporting carers from 'non-traditional' *cringe* backgrounds. In both of these instances, social #stigma needs a kicking. I would think that the traveling community would benefit from portable benefits and known & safe resource centers. #irishmed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski T4 Education & Awareness for every community at all times✨ #IrishMed
Lisa Davis Budzinski @lisadbudzinski RT @drlfarrell:
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T5 for the chat ––– RT @drlfarrell: T5 What changes would you like to see for family carers before Carers Week 2019? #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters T4: LGBTQ+ carers need legal and societal recognition and access to the same supports. In the U.S. I have heard about carers being unable to access their loved ones in hospital. Sadly, we lack adequate #research, as well. #irishmed
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T5 No doubt some particular desires for the Irish population, but I sense that many of these issues are shared @ the world 1/ #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters RT @CareAllianceIrl:
Mimi McCormack Micah @molowa26 RT @CareAllianceIrl:
Bernadette Keefe MD @nxtstop1 T5 So:1/ recognition of carers by HCPs so medical/ social info easily shared & accessed, 2/some $ compensation, 3/work flexibility #irishmed
Rie Lopez, MPH (she/her) @RieOfLetters T5: In the US, I would like to see more people talking about carers, like we have just done in this chat. I don't expect change overnight, but we must address the stigma of carers being "less than" or overly inflated in value for their "supreme sacrifice" #irishmed
Dr Patricia McCarthy @mccartpm RT @22Q11_Ireland:
