@JHospMedicine #JHMChat A1: Hospitalists spend so much time taking care of patients, getting through the daily tasks that there isn't much time left in the typical day to reflect on oneself and how they can improve. Leadership like anything else is a skill that needs to be learned and honed.

A1: I found that we're asked to take on leadership roles all the time, especially hospital committees, unit medical directors, medical education, and quality and safety. I don't think training has fully caught up with the many hats hospitalists wear #JHMChat

A1: I think leadership important for many, but not all docs. Having ownership is empowering and helps w professional satisfaction/fulfilment. Not taught during training because....time? And leadership training doesnt fit seamlessly in normal training structure. #JHMChat

A1: Leadership is a complex construct - hard to define, harder to measure. As a default, many of us adopt different leadership traits/qualities of leaders to whom we are exposed But, like anything else, deliberate practice is needed. #JHMchat @JHospMedicine

@michellebr00ks A1: Agree with this. I think it’s hard to “teach” leadership because it can be a nebulous description (and comes with personal bias about what makes a good leader). I find mentorship to be a great way to help someone grow into a leader. #JHMChat
