Krista @Kristacatlady Hey Twitter friends, for the next hour, I’ll be joining #Migraine Chat Monday (#migrainechat). If you’d prefer not to see these tweets in your feed, feel free to mute the hashtag. I’d encourage you not to, though. You’ll learn a lot!
Beth Morton @beth_morton A reminder of two basic chat tips: 1) I’ll start each question with Q1, Q2, etc. You should start your corresponding reply tweet with A1, A2, etc. 2) Always remember the hashtag! It helps for following the #migrainechat conversation.

Beth Morton @beth_morton @migrainekrista Hi Krista! I'm so glad you could make it! #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 Hi! I’m Emily, intractable chronic migraineur in Toronto, ON 🇨🇦 where we are actually having a few warmer days after the recent polar vortex. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @elxtric_emily Same here! Isn't it a great break? I'm not sure if my head agrees... #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @SarahLerner @mychronicbrain Welcome Sarah! I'm happy you're here, but wish we were all here for a better reason. #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 @beth_morton Same here. Had a rough night. 🤕 #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton Ready for Q1? Let’s jump in! With Valentine’s Day coming up, we wanted to focus on #migraine-related #selfcare. #migrainechat #treatyoself
Beth Morton @beth_morton Q1. #Selfcare is a hot topic these days. As someone with #migraine, what does self-care mean to you? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain RT @beth_morton: Q1. #Selfcare is a hot topic these days. As someone with #migraine, what does self-care mean to you? #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady A1: #selfcare for me is things that help keep me sane in a very limited life filled with #Migraines. #MigraineChat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 A1: I struggle a lot with #selfcare but if I had to boil it down I’d say that in my life it means being gentle with myself, shutting out toxicity from others, learning my body’s limitations, living mindfully & allowing myself to do things that bring me joy. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity @beth_morton A1: # Selfcare means knowing when to say no and not feeling bad about it. It took my many years to be able to stop feeling guilty about canceling or saying no. Now I am very aware that if I do a “thing” that is likely it and I will need time to recover. #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton A1. My selfcare is anything that manages my #migraine symptoms or any associated triggers like #anxiety. So any distractors or stress relievers. Art, meditation, audiobooks, chatting with friends... #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @elxtric_emily Excellent reply! This sums it up beautifully, Emily! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton RT @elxtric_emily: A1: A1: I struggle a lot with #selfcare but if I had to boil it down I’d say that in my life it means being gentle with myself, shutting out toxicity from others, learning my body’s limitations, living mindfully & allowing myself to do things that bring me joy. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain @beth_morton Distractors are often a must! #MigraineChat
I Slapped FedSoc & Ouiser Boudreaux💉💉💉💉😷🇺🇦 @nwayne66 RT @beth_morton: A1. My selfcare is anything that manages my #migraine symptoms or any associated triggers like #anxiety. So any distractors or stress relievers. Art, meditation, audiobooks, chatting with friends... #migrainechat

Beth Morton @beth_morton Q2. What are some of your favorite self-care activities? Do you have any that help distract or relieve #migraine symptoms? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain @elxtric_emily We agree. Being gentle with yourself is not always easy, but it is important. #MigraineChat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain RT @beth_morton: Q2. What are some of your favorite self-care activities? Do you have any that help distract or relieve #migraine symptoms? #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady A2: I listen to audio books, read, play farming video games, watch a lot of mindless, sometimes intense TV, baths, spend time with my hubby and cats, meditate, drink tea, just try to find joy in anything. #MigraineChat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity A2: Audiobooks. I borrow them from the library with the Libby app. When the pain is bad I have soft headphones in a mask that cover my eyes. #MigraineChat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 A2: when I can, I love reading and writing poetry. Also love talking to friends on social media and IRL. A phone call w/ my best friend can really make a day better. Sometimes things like going out for ☕️ makes me feel better too— I just wish I was up for it more. #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady @Medical_Oddity I just bought some soft ear buds so mine stopped digging into my ears. The library is a sanity saver for sure. #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @Medical_Oddity I'm a huge fan of my library, the Libby app, and Audible. #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 TV/movies are sometimes helpful too, especially with my anxiety. An episode of @FriendsTV usually feels familiar & comforting. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton Q3. When do you practice self-care? Do you practice during a #migraine attack? Prior/to prevent an attack? While recovering from an attack? All of the above? Does it depend on the activity? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain RT @beth_morton: Q3. When do you practice self-care? Do you practice during a #migraine attack? Prior/to prevent an attack? While recovering from an attack? All of the above? Does it depend on the activity? #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity @beth_morton A3: I’d like to say I practice it all the time, but sometimes I end up being forced into it because of an attack. I find I have different kinds of self care for panic attacks. #MigraineChat
Krista @Kristacatlady A3: I feel like I need to practice it all the time or I become very depressed. But the activities change depending on how sick I am. #MigraineChat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 A3: My migraine is intractable but it definitely depends on the pain severity. If I’m at a 7 or above, I’m in bed with ice & meds & my mental health is usually in a pretty low place. Otherwise I can usually tolerate some TV or reading. #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady For me self care has mostly become synonymous with "coping with migraines." #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain @elxtric_emily @FriendsTV Sometimes the familiar is so helpful! Your brain isn’t straining to follow plot, you are relaxed and at ease. #MigraineChat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 the more abstract, ‘boring’ self care— breathing mindfully, eating/staying hydrated, managing relationships— that’s stuff I work on constantly, even if I don’t always do a good job. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton I try to meditate regularly to manage my stress level, but often use guided meditations when I'm having an attack. Most activities I practice regularly to help manage #migraine & other symptoms. There are specific things I do during an attack (like a hot bath). #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady A3b: If I an too sick for even an audio book, I do a Metta prayer (Buddhist series of compassion phrases) over and over to keep from catastrophizing the pain. #migrainechat
I Slapped FedSoc & Ouiser Boudreaux💉💉💉💉😷🇺🇦 @nwayne66 RT @beth_morton: Ready for Q1? Let’s jump in! With Valentine’s Day coming up, we wanted to focus on #migraine-related #selfcare. #migrainechat #treatyoself
Beth Morton @beth_morton Q4.Why is making time for self-care important in your #migraine routine? #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady @mychronicbrain @elxtric_emily @FriendsTV Exactly! I bought the British version of the Harry Potter audio books for cheap and I listen to them when I have a bad one because I know the story so well, it's comforting, and it is so long. #MigraineChat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain @SarahLerner @beth_morton Not feeling isolated is definitely an important part of #selfcare! #MigraineChat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain RT @beth_morton: Q4.Why is making time for self-care important in your #migraine routine? #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton Others have made a good point. I'm also intractable, so basically, I call an attack anything >6 when I'm pretty non-functioning. Otherwise, I'm just dealing. Ugh, that's sad. #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady A4: I would be suicidal if I didn't practice regular self-care. Chronic migraines has wreaked such havoc on my life and it is so hard to function at all. Self care usually keeps my depression manageable though it hasn't always in the last 12 yr. #MigraineChat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity @beth_morton It’s interesting when you live with pain for so long, what you let your normal become. I think pain free would become the abnormal. #chronicmigraine is a beast, and that’s why I think it’s so important to have a community like this to share tips and talk with. #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton A1. Before #chronicmigraine, selfcare was a treat. Now, it's kind of survival. It's how I manage my illness & keep it in check. It's as big a part of my treatment as any meds I take, I think. In this latest flare, I'm not doing a very good job. It can be hard work. #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 A4: (tw for suicide) my migraines led me to attempt suicide. they still are harmful to my MH. practicing self care for me is vital— it eases the pain & grief of #chronicillness, reminds me I can feel joy, staves off isolation & keeps me hopeful. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @JenImsland No worries! I'm seeing your replies! Just add #migrainechat so we can make sure it gets in the transcript!
JenX 👻 @Jen9Cat @beth_morton #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @elxtric_emily It can be hard. I find it works for me when I focus on something. Breath, sound, a mantra, etc. But I totally get that a busy brain can make it difficult. Just know the goal isn't a clear mind, just not to dwell on any one thought. And it isn't for everybody! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton Q5. Do you get any benefits from your various self-care activities beyond #migraine relief (or instead of migraine relief)? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain RT @beth_morton: Q5. Do you get any benefits from your various self-care activities beyond #migraine relief (or instead of migraine relief)? #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton A5. I think a lot of us have covered how much #mentalhealth benefit we get from #selfcare and how directly that helps our #migraine. These things are incredibly related for me. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain RT @beth_morton: A5. I think a lot of us have covered how much #mentalhealth benefit we get from #selfcare and how directly that helps our #migraine. These things are incredibly related for me. #migrainechat
Krista @Kristacatlady @elxtric_emily @beth_morton Turning off thoughts when I am in pain is not possible. I can only do meditations involving visualizations or repeated phrases. There is a book called How to be Sick by Toni Bernhard full of mindful practices to do while sick. It has been invaluable to me. #MigraineChat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 @migrainekrista @beth_morton I’ll definitely look into it!! I’ve had that book rec from others too. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @migrainekrista @elxtric_emily Yes! @toni_bernhard's books are wonderful! #MigraineChat
Krista @Kristacatlady A5: I had issues with depression and anxiety before migraine so self-care has been important to my mental health for years. But adding chronic migraine to the mix made self care imperative for my mental health. #MigraineChat
em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 A5: I’ve struggled with #mentalillness even longer than I’ve struggled with #chronicmigraine and at this point in my life the two directly affect one another. I’ve found that self care helps my anxiety which helps me eat & sleep which helps my migraine. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton @SarahLerner This is a really nice way of looking at it. I tend to think of it as treatment. I should also think of it as joy and pleasure more often. Thank you for this perspective. #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton Q6. We are well into 2019, but it’s not too late for resolutions! Do you have any #migraine/self-care goals you want to share? How will you try to reach them? #migrainechat

Krista @Kristacatlady @SarahLerner @beth_morton Yes, my house has become a den of ridicularity since i went chronic. I fill it with stuff that makes me smile. #MigraineChat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity @beth_morton A6: Per my doctor’s instructions, I try to walk when I can. It’s hard, but it does help. #selfcare #MigraineChat

em 🌹✨🏳️🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99 A6: I want to take better care of myself, stand up for myself more when my family puts me down for my illness and more than anything find a treatment that will let me get back to the life I used to live, which I miss so very much 😔🤞🏻 #migrainechat

Krista @Kristacatlady A6: my goal is to get a handle on my depression. I lost 2 cats this last year, and my migraines greatly increased in frequency so those have done a number on me. I am thinking of going back to counseling to see if that will help. #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton Feel free to keep chatting or add thoughts later. Last thing, if you hadn’t heard, the inaugural edition of @mychronicbrain is now available. Please check it out and let us know what you think! https://t.co/SEpuTbDNTk. #migrainechat
