Ready for #MigraineChat!!!!
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Here we go! #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
If you are new to Twitter chats, two tips. 1) We’ll start our questions with Q1, Q2, etc. You should start your corresponding reply tweet with A1, A2, etc. 2) Always remember the hashtag! It helps for following the #migrainechat conversation.
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Before we dive into questions. Let’s see who is here. I’m Beth and I’ll be co-moderating with my friends, @mychronicbrain. I live in Vermont and have had #migraine for 20+ years (diagnosed), chronic for 3 years. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@mychronicbrain Full disclosure, I'm limping into today's chat and may be low on interactions. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
While you continue introductions, a few notes. This #migrainechat is purely informational. Nothing shared should be considered medical advice or a substitution for talking with your doctor. If you don’t have one, find a #headache specialist here: https://t.co/ECwDhBTzAw

@sarinahoskins @beth_morton Hi, Sarina! So glad you could make it! #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️‍🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99
I'm Emily, from freezing Toronto, coming to the chat today looking for a distraction from my migraine-y brain. A migraineur for 10 years (chronic for 5, daily for just over a year now). #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@mychronicbrain @BreatheMia Me!! #migrainechat https://t.co/oz3bhu8pw2
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Okay, now that we've gotten that out of the way... Ready for Q1? Let’s jump in! #MigraineChat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Q1. How did you find your current #headache specialist (FYI - we may abbreviate this as HAS for tweet space)? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@elxtric_emily Hey, Emily! Happy to "see" you! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Q1 below... #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Hi Bridget! So glad you could make it! (Psst -- don't forget to use "#migrainechat" with all tweets!)
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Yay, Jenn! Glad you're here. #MigraineChat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@beth_morton A1. My PCP was a big help in this. I had never heard of a HAS, but he had done clinical rotations with one. He connected me. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@bwalker1314 @beth_morton How did you connect with your current HAS*? #migrainechat *Headache Specialist
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A1. When I left Boston for my hometown in Vermont, there was really only one #headache clinic within a reasonable driving distance. I "found" mine by default and wish I had other options. Unfortunately, there's just such a shortage. #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️‍🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99
A1: I was referred to my headache specialist by my GP after going through all the first line preventive meds with him to no avail and trying a paediatric neurologist as a kid who didn't believe I had migraines. My HAS is under no such delusions, thankfully. #MigraineChat
Bridget Walker @bwalker1314
@beth_morton Q1 I found my current #headache specialist through the AMF tool and by talking to members of various support communities on Facebook. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@elxtric_emily That is SO frustrating. You're not the first former child-patient to have this story. It boils my blood! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@beth_morton Had you heard of HAS before? Or just assumed there was such a doctor? #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Q2. The wait to see a #headache specialist can take months. What can you suggest someone do while they wait to see a new specialist/doctor? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@bwalker1314 @beth_morton So much important information travels via word of mouth. Do you have any particular FB communities you'd recommend to folks newly diagnosed (or newly on that platform)? #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️‍🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99
@mychronicbrain Yup, I've heard it from plenty of others too!! It's so frustrating. Kids get migraines too!! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@bwalker1314 @beth_morton I definitely lucked out! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Oi! It definitely feels like forever while you're waiting... #migrainechat
rebecca @blueraccoon
A1: my neuro told he he couldn't help me anymore and gave me a referral to a headache specialist. That didn't work out so well. I saw a different neuro, who referred me to a *different* HAS. She saved my life by agreeing to write for Aimovig. #migrainechat
sarina 🌻 @sarinahoskins
A1. We (my mom and I) found my HAS when I was still a minor. We researched online for local neurologists who had experience with #chronicmigraine and found my current HAS. I've had the same HAS since senior year of high school (3rd year of college now). #MigraineChat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@mychronicbrain A1: had been going to Stanford for my Endocrine issues & a former Neuro recommended I go to @StanfordPain for my facial pain & ultimately my migraine. The do a workup with multiple docs and come up with treatment plan. This led me to my current dr, who I really like.#migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@beth_morton Track. Track. Track. Track EVERYTHING you can. At the very least, track your daily pain levels and what medications you take. If you can track if the medications have any impact, even better. Track if you go to Urgent Care/ER or your PCP. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
A2. The more information you can bring about *your* migraine, the better. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A2. Keep seeing your PCP if even to maintain treatment. Use resources like @amfmigraine and their #MoveAgainstMigraine FB group. @MigraineAgain and their @MigraineSummit are great resources, too. Follow leading HAS on social media (@AmaalStarling for example). #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@blueraccoon Welcome, Rebecca! You hit on an important aspect of finding an HAS--one size doesn't fit all! If you're able, definitely find one who will work with your needs. Finding a doctor who "clicks" with you can make all the difference. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@sarinahoskins Oh wow! That's awesome. And having family members who are able to advocate for you in this way is such a gift! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@sarinahoskins Definitely agree with this! Do you have any specific recommendations on how you find these online support groups? I know I (Mia) sort of stumbled into mine here on Twitter. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
THIS. This right here!!! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Learn as much as you can about #migraine and your own own triggers and treatments. Reach out to others when you need help understanding what information to trust. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Good to know. Thanks! #MigraineChat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
RT @beth_morton: Learn as much as you can about #migraine and your own own triggers and treatments. Reach out to others when you need help understanding what information to trust. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Q3. What can someone expect during their first appointment with a #headache specialist? What are your appointments like? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Definitely! Just like with other areas, not everything you read online is good information. Connect with other patients to learn how to identify good sources of information and to feel out if others have had success with treatment ideas. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@mychronicbrain I had been seeing some HAS since my teens, so each time I move I find a new one. Some have been wonderful... others I've not been sad to leave behind! #migrainechat
em 🌹✨🏳️‍🌈✡️🌿✨🌹 @emilygayle99
Hey all, unfortunately my migraine is getting cranky and making it hard to look at the screen so I'm going to sign off for now. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@beth_morton A3: First appointments, make sure you have all your paperwork, even if you’ve filled something out, you’ll be going over it multiple times. Your doc is going to want to know your history and what you have tried and talk about what your treatment plan will look like. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
A3. Mine was a lot of talking. About my pain, my medications, what helps/doesn't help, and information about Migraine Disease. I was given an EKG (painless for me) and had some blood work drawn. I also received some new medications to try. #migrainechat
Bridget Walker @bwalker1314
@beth_morton A2 Keep track of attacks and get to know your family history of #headache. Also find the words to describe your symptoms. What is it you feel? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@elxtric_emily Feel better, Emily! Thanks for joining us for a bit. Your voice is cherished! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
"Find the words to describe your symptoms" This is excellent advice! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@NHF @mychronicbrain I'm SO happy to have you here! #migrainechat

Find a headache disorder specialist today! https://t.co/E94mH778MU #migrainechat #migraine #migrainedisease #headache
Bridget Walker @bwalker1314
@beth_morton A3 Expect to give a detailed history. You will answer several questions. Your history is important to help determine if you have a primary or secondary headache disorder. #migraine is diagnosed from a history, normal neuro assessment, and process of elimination. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@sarinahoskins It bears repeating! Tracking your pain provides very important information for your doctor. I (Mia) started using the "N1 Headache" app (formerly @curelator). Before, I just used paper. Both have provided helpful information for me and my HAS. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@beth_morton @NHF You made it! So happy to have your voice here. :) #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@beth_morton A3(2): My appointments are check-ins, though I keep in pretty regular contact via online portal. We discuss how I’ve been feeling & what adjustments I need in medication & if new treatments are possible. Also what I have been able to do (able to get in a walk etc?) #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A3. I'm not a patient at Thomas Jeffersons HA clinic, but love their intake forms for thinking about initial conversations with a HAS. https://t.co/qavJSsdU6O #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
RT @blueraccoon: A1: A1: my neuro told he he couldn't help me anymore and gave me a referral to a headache specialist. That didn't work out so well. I saw a different neuro, who referred me to a *different* HAS. She saved my life by agreeing to write for Aimovig. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A3. Since I'm low on spoons, I'll just say that at this stage, for me, ditto. #migrainechat
Bridget Walker @bwalker1314
RT @beth_morton: A2.
Beth Morton @beth_morton
These are super long, but very thorough and I think mirror what you might get in prep from a new HAS. #MigraineChat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
A3. If you're up for a bit of paperwork, the intake paperwork for @JeffHeadacheCtr has you think through and articulate a lot of helpful information #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
This is so true. It has worked for me a million times, and made me some great friends! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
Q4. Appointments are short! What are some tips you can share for preparing for an appointment with a #headache specialist? #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
RT @mychronicbrain: A3. If you're up for a bit of paperwork, the intake paperwork for @JeffHeadacheCtr has you think through and articulate a lot of helpful information #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Bah! My internet connection is SO bad today. ...here's the paperwork I was referring to: https://t.co/Gl9dMVsUPi | #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Q5. Many #headache specialists ask for a #migraine diary: yea or nay? If you use one, what/how do you track? #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A4. Prioritize questions, time will be limited. Be clear about how the time has gone since you last saw your doc (how meds worked, what you were able to do/not do, etc.). I'm sure there is more but I'm running low on steam... sorry, folks! #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@beth_morton A4: I keep a running list of questions on my phone in the notes section since that bad boy is never far from me. I also usually have a patient advocate (ie, mom) w/ me at said appt because I usually have a migraine & brain fog and she can ask clearer qs then I can #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
A4. Prepare! Have questions you want to ask listed and prioritized. I've never met a doctor who thinks it's weird that I have my questions written out. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@mychronicbrain @beth_morton Me, but with iPhone. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
This is a FANTASTIC idea and I have no idea why I did not do it years ago. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@sarinahoskins Checking reviews or asking in support groups is a really good idea! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@PyesMusings @Medical_Oddity Yessss!! Another spreadsheet person!! #migrainedata #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
A4. If you can, bring someone with you to act as a second brain. You'll get a LOT of information in a short amount of time. Having someone with you will help you remember everything. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@Medical_Oddity Really great idea! What do you do on days you just can't handle the screen? Fill it in later? Record on paper? Seems like a silly question perhaps, but a real struggle in down times. #migrainechat
Bridget Walker @bwalker1314
@beth_morton A4 I recall Dr. Goadsby suggesting to consolidate info. ahead of time, write down, how many attacks, how many were severe, if you experienced any new symptoms or side effects, and any questions as some suggestions #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A5. I'm mixed on this. I looove data and spreadsheets and tracking stuff. It's what I went to school forever to do! I do track and it varies what. I always track symptoms, meds and major possible triggers. #migrainechat
National Headache Foundation (NHF) @NHF
@mychronicbrain Q5 Has anyone downloaded a migraine tracking app and shared the data with their doctor? #headachespecialist #migrainechat
Rebecca @PyesMusings
@Medical_Oddity I mean, it's an enormous pain in the ass to put together initially, and demoralizing to look at, are 2 good reasons 😉 But it does save a lot of time in appointments. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@Medical_Oddity Ha ha, nevermind. I thought you meant you were tracking each instance, not that you were tracking in general. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
A5. Where I worry is that, for me, I can get anxious about triggers. And so many I can't control. I tend to use it so that I know if treatments are helping/hurting or if I'm overmedicating. #MigraineChat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@sarinahoskins @NHF A5. One of my HAS had me use @curelator, but oddly, never had me submit the full data. They're only ever interested in overall trends it seems. However, I've found it helpful for myself. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
We hear this! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@sarinahoskins @NHF @sarinahoskins Did you find the experience helpful? Do you still use Migraine Buddy? #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@mychronicbrain A5: I did keep a paper diary for a few months when my dr asked, but we never actually looked at the data. I do have @MigraineBuddy on my phone now and use @RoundHealthCo to track my medicine. But as of yet have not shared with the doctor. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@InfiniteKnot Mostly she helps manage my other conditions that my HAS won't touch, but that impact #migraine. She also calls in meds in a pinch when I'm not able to connect with my HAS. For those with no other option, it at least offers some treatment until they see a HAS. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@NHF It's all good! #migrainechat https://t.co/E7sraJFUMI
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@MigraineAssist Hey, coffee is also important. Maybe go over what we chatted about and add your thoughts? We'd love to have them included! #migrainechat
Bridget Walker @bwalker1314
@mychronicbrain A5 I include very very brief notes including date, duration, pain intensity, other symptoms, and anything concerning. I like Migraine Buddy for my personal use, but my doctor likes hard copy info #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@Medical_Oddity @MigraineBuddy @RoundHealthCo @RoundHealthCo was a game changer for me! #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
CT. Okay, I know the hour went fast, but time for closing thoughts. What did you learn or what will you take away from today’s chat? Do you have any lingering questions? #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@bwalker1314 A5. Mine too. Does Migraine Buddy export for printing? #migrainechat
sarina 🌻 @sarinahoskins
@mychronicbrain @NHF I found the experience useful and in the beginning I used Migraine Buddy all the time. But as I learned more about my #migraine and symptoms, I found it less useful. I would still recommend it to those trying to get an overview of their #migraine symptoms. #MigraineChat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@mychronicbrain @MigraineBuddy @RoundHealthCo Me too, so glad you recommended it to me! Thank you friend!!! #Migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@NHF @mychronicbrain A5. I've yet to find one that works really well given my #migraine attacks don't really ever break. I find apps frustrating for that reason. I also have a really hard time identifying triggers anymore. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@Medical_Oddity @MigraineBuddy @RoundHealthCo Anytime! #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@beth_morton @NHF This has been a major frustration for me too. @curelator (aka N1 Headache) is the only app I've found to date that will allow for attacks that last apparently indefinitely while still tracking changes in pain, triggers, etc. #migrainechat
Jenn Heater, Chief Oddity (she/her) @Medical_Oddity
@beth_morton I think it great to have this community to gather together with and learn from. Thanks for all of the tips and stories. Thank you @beth_morton & @mychronicbrain. And with that it’s off to go use the @_gammaCore_ to try to tackle this beast of a #migraine. #migrainechat
My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
Hi Rose! How have you found the tracking process? Helpful? Not helpful? #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton

My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@rosevalade We've talked w/ many patients on it. Your story isn't unique. For some, it's bc they try to do more as they're feeling better. For others, it's a mystery as to why. But stay strong! It takes time to reach maximum efficacy. And you have us on your side cheering! #migrainechat

My Chronic Brain @mychronicbrain
@rosevalade We definitely understand the drive to make up for lost time. Chronic Migraine patients aren’t lazy, we’re in pain. When it’s gone? BAM! We hit the ground running. Learning to pace when you want to run is hard. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@migrainekrista @InfiniteKnot I agree! We should all be seeing #headache specialists. The spirit of my suggestion was don't give up care if a PCP *is* able to maintain treatment while someone waits to see a HAS for the first time. #MigraineChat
Krista @Kristacatlady
@NHF @mychronicbrain I haven't had a doc who wanted to see my migraone diary in years. I track with @MigraineBuddy and it is invaluable for allowing me to determine if meds impact the frequency, duration, or pain level of my migraines. #MigraineChat
Krista @Kristacatlady
@PyesMusings @Medical_Oddity @beth_morton Me, too! It is so helpful to just add to it and print it out. I wish I had kept track of dosages because in the last few years, docs have asked and I can't remember. #migrainechat
Beth Morton @beth_morton
@Audionut612 I'm pretty limited, too. The shortage of available #headache docs is frustrating for patients, but I know groups like @NHF are working to certify more healthcare professionals. #MigraineChat
