Steph Grey @StephGrey84
Hi folks, Steph Grey here - Learning & Research Support Librarian from Public Health England (PHE). Likely to be lurking rather than talking tonight, but interested to hear what you all have to say! #ukmedlibs
Tom Roper @tomroper
Tom here, Clinical Librarian at @BrightonSx_LKS #ukmedlibs
nkenssous @nkenssous
Good evening #ukmedlibs clinical librarian at Buckshealthcare.
Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
Hello everyone, Cath here, Health Literacy project manager at NELFT NHS #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Ok, Q1) 1) What do you think as information professionals our role is in providing patient information about nutrition and healthy eating? Remember to use the hashtag #ukmedlibs!
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
@CathLynneJ Ooh that sounds interesting - can you share more on the project? #Ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
Oops first tweet and I’ve let the side down already!! Use the hashtag- #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
Q1 I definitely think we as info profs can support quality control and facilitate dissemination, but I think there are many things to consider - who is being targeted (eg staff or patients/public) #ukmedlibs 1/2
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
There are many ways to support this - whether by directly supporting staff, checking leaflets, putting up posters etc where appropriate. #Ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
She said it better than I did! #Ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
Q1 what else is being delivered to that audience, are we the right people to drive the message. Much of a campaign's impact comes from who is delivering, so makes more sense for it to come from e.g. Trust dietitians #ukmedlibs 2/2
nkenssous @nkenssous
Provide good quality evidence based consumer health information to both health professionals and patients #ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
@StephGrey84 Agreed but that’s where we can support behind the scenes as we do often do. #Ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Q1) part 2.. shall we start the discussion with patient and public? So,What do you think as information professionals our role is in providing patient information about nutrition and healthy eating to patients/ public? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
RT @nkenssous: Provide good quality evidence based consumer health information to both health professionals and patients #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
@samanthaclare Definitely - as always, need to muscle our way in to make sure teams know about us! #ukmedlibs https://t.co/8ZgtWAhjZT
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@StephGrey84 @samanthaclare It's never a library twitter chat without a cat gif ;) #ukmedlibs
Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
Q1 - I see our role as quality assurance too, ensuring that info is up-to-date and supports recent strategies e.g. Change 4 Life sugar campaign #ukmedlibs
nkenssous @nkenssous
Signpost to support groups and help lines #ukmedlibs

Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
@CathLynneJ Cool - worth having a chat away from twitter especially with @SueK4H as we’re trying to do similar in the South. #Ukmedlibs
Tom Roper @tomroper
#ukmedlibs May I ask something more fundamental, to wit what is the message? I was asked to find the evidence behind the theories of a doctor with a high public profile and endorsements by lots of the great and good….there was none
nkenssous @nkenssous
Q is healthy diet 4 a specific condition.? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@CathLynneJ Sugar is everywhere in the news at the moment....it can be information overload #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
I think it really varies from org to org, depending on interaction w/patients, opportunities to provide materials (whether a display in a public area / a patient/public information service / links with public libs) and if a separate pt info service exists within an org #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
2) Do your team currently support clinicians with patient information on healthy eating? #ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
I think we’re better as sign posters and fact checkers - we need to take care - as @tomroper just alluded to. #Ukmedlibs
nkenssous @nkenssous
Provide training on how to quality assured HI and evaluation skills of PHI internet resources #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@tomroper It can be very confusing with a lot of 'health nutritionists' on social media...with very little evidence behind their diets and nutrition advice #ukmedlibs
Catherine McLaren @cmmclaren
@samanthaclare @tomroper I agree with this @samanthaclare #ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
Absolutely - it’s about giving people the skills to check for themselves #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
@samanthaclare @tomroper Really good point about signposting - so if we come across useful evidence on dietary topics, forwarding them to our orgs nutrition pros so they can choose how to act on it #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@samanthaclare @tomroper Agreed! We can't make the decision for people but we can definitely navigate #ukmedlibs

UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Oops don't think question 2 sent! Here it is just in case 2) Do your team currently support clinicians with patient information on healthy eating? #ukmedlibs
nkenssous @nkenssous

nkenssous @nkenssous
Equality is also a big issue, how can we provide information in the right format and level I e other language, #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
@UKMedLibs Q2 PHE doesn't have a clinical set-up, so this doesn't really apply to us - but our team does a lot of work supporting those who produce much of the evidence which leads to that patient info! #ukmedlibs
Catherine McLaren @cmmclaren
#ukmedlibs Q2 I’m not aware of many library teams doing this. interested to hear where it is happening so this practice can be shared more widely.
Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
On signposting, one thing we are rolling out at the moment is health information stands in public libraries - could tie in with existing provision e.g. diabetes resources & navigating food logging apps #ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
@nkenssous The accessible information standard is good (and legal) BUT doesn’t consider quality of information unfortunately #ukmedlibs

Tom Roper @tomroper
@samanthaclare @nkenssous I thought it was being withdrawn/revised? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Maybe this is the answer....working with other library sectors? #ukmedlibs Or getting out in G.P. surgeries etc and working alongside primary care staff?
Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
@nkenssous Agree, I've been reading up on health reference interview tips in prep for working with public libraries - @SelfMgmtScot has useful resources and dialogues #ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
@tomroper @nkenssous Ooh I’ve not heard that - just to confuse things though - there is another information standard which DOES look at quality and assures the evidence base. #Ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@tomroper @samanthaclare @nkenssous Yes I heard it is being withdrawn...if I remember rightly around march time #ukmedlibs

Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
And it’s confusing to have two so called info standards - as you can see! #Ukmedlibs
Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
@UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs I keep forgetting the hashtag! Yes love the idea of having a stack of leaflets in GP surgeries and also community centres and even local supermarkets - info there where it's likely to be seen
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Q3) Is your team planning in developing or increasing support to clinicians on patient information? #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
And that also goes for Local Authority Public Health teams, who are an amazing resource and can reach the public - but the links don't exist everywhere (yet - I'm feeling optimistic tonight 😉 ) #ukmedlibs

Q3 We would like to develop a comprehensive leaflet outlining how patients can source quality info themselves e.g. flagging Behind the Headlines on the NHS site #ukmedlibs
Catherine McLaren @cmmclaren
#ukmedlibs Q3 there is work been rolled out nationally around supporting Health Literacy by HEE, which links into supporting clinicians with patient information.
nkenssous @nkenssous
Q2 not on healthy eating in particular but consumer health information in general as reference only #ukmedlibs
Steph Grey @StephGrey84
@CathLynneJ @UKMedLibs Would be great for Local Authority Public Health teams to be included in dissemination, so they can advise on best way of getting messages out - and also using Behavioural Insights research on which methods work #ukmedlibs

Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
@StephGrey84 @UKMedLibs Yes great idea! #ukmedlibs
nkenssous @nkenssous
Q3 supporting clinicians with phi is contractual. Is part of standard service provision - literature searching. Not the same for patients and members of the public #ukmedlibs
Tom Roper @tomroper
@nkenssous @samanthaclare I don’t disagree. I meant the information standard #ukmedlibs
Cath Jenkins @CathLynneJ
#ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
I actually think we’re beginning to move on from there and looking at health literacy - although they’re nearly entwined. #Ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
I meant neatly of course although nearly kinda works. #Ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Yes, I think they both go hand in hand #ukmedlibs
Catherine McLaren @cmmclaren

@UKMedLibs @nkenssous Well, lots of librarians do #parkrun #libraruns #ukmedlibs
Sam Burgess @samanthaclare
@UKMedLibs I don’t think you can have one without the other, especially as just over 50% af adults (16-65 in England) struggle to understand functional health literature. #Ukmedlibs
