UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Welcome to tonight’s #ukmedlibs journal club. @tomroper here at the controls. Please remember the hashtag (or you won’t be included in the transcript)
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs And let’s start by introducing ourselves. In my @tomroper persona, I’m one of two clinical librarians at @BrightonSx_LKS #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Which is why I thought this paper would be good for a #ukmedlibs journal club
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs @tomroper @BrightonSx_LKS I’m louise Levitt, assistant librarian at west Middlesex university hospital #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @liberkiely @WHHKES @sheffielduni Don’t worry. I’ve been known to forget it and I’m leading #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @Lady_PGD Welcome! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs And journal club tradition demands that I ask, first of all, who’s read the paper? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Don’t worry if you haven’t. I’ll summarise as we go #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs I’ve read it only once 😳 #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs First and foremost, what study design is it? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @liberkiely:
Emily Hopkins @emilylovedhim #ukmedlibs I'm arriving a bit late and wasn't able to read the paper so I'm going to lurk!
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @ingridboring Welcome Ingrid. Just tweet as we go #ukmedlibs i’ll be asking some questions
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs Qualitative research utilising a interviews and focus groups #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare Yes, quite right, a case study using qualitative methods. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Would anyone like to outline the question they were trying to answer? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Like this https://t.co/70ghUzpVBa #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs The question is a very broad one, stated in third para of Background. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs What’s interesting is that the title suggests that it’s going to be about clinical librarians….but the question seems to be about the whole service #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs But then they say the utility and level of integration of the CL programme. #ukmedlibs
Emily Hopkins @emilylovedhim @samanthaclare Oooh, I think Magnet is a special designation thing to attract nurses. I did a search on it once which was a nightmare, kept getting stuff about magnets in MRIs! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @liberkiely I think it does, after the previous potholder retired. Would have liked more detail in the background, to be able to tell how it compares to a British LKS #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Anyway, they did a literature review (they don’t say how) and found, it seems, only four papers #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs I took it to mean “clinical librarian service” but the way it reads it does seem to be the library service as a whole. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs (I wondered if some of the lack of detail might be because J Hosp Libr has a very restrictive word count limit) #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs They decided to do a needs assessment using interviews and focus groups. Do we know why they chose this approach? #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs I don’t feel they explain this decision except to say they considered appreciative inquiry #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs So they ran the focus groups with three questions, recruited participants with purposive sampling, and n=16 #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Now in qualitative studies we’re less worried about sample size than in quantitative, and we don’t know the size of the hospital. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare @Lady_PGD That’s a guess on my part https://t.co/V5jrF6cjUw #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs We’re starting to look at the findings. So, yes, lack of awareness of what they call ‘clinical library services’…is that the same as the clinical librarian(s)? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Second theme is librarians teaching in clinical setting #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs And third is librarians as expert consultants #ukmedlibs These were all derived using conventional content analysis
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs Perhaps it’s a clinical library service with an outreach service as part of the offering #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs And then they let the Value Engineering person loose (was this one of the Clinical Librarians? One of the authors? Can’t tell) #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Had anyone come across the Function Analysis System Technique (FAST) before? #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @UKMedLibs Was disappointed to read that a physician said that librarian rounding didn’t change patient care #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann @liberkiely Agreed. Nothing groundbreaking #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs It wasn’t clear to me how they arrived at the basic function, as defined by FAST, of Empower Clinicians #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @liberkiely Yes, and anonymised transcripts, or at the least the workings of the thematic analysis #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs What do they tell us about quality improvement initiatives in the organisation as a whole? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @ingridboring @liberkiely Yes, that’s right #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Are any of your organisations using QI tools like FAST, Lean, Six Sigma? Is the library involved? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs So, following on from @ingridboring’s point, having read this paper, would you do anything differently in your service? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @liberkiely @ingridboring Great idea. Coffee and evidence on how to cope with shift working? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare @Lady_PGD @liberkiely @CILIPHLG Yes, and we’re going to try a chat-along as part of our presentation! #ukmedlibs #hlg2018
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs And it’s the end of the hour. Thanks, everyone who participated. Any last reflections on doing journal club on Twitter? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare I think they’ll take it in the spirit it was intended. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare We’re grateful to @runbrarian who tipped us off to the repository copy #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs So, goodnight everyone, and thanks #ukmedlibs I have a vegetable lasagne to tuck into |
#ukmedlibs content from Twitter.
