UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs good evening all! Your host for the next hour is @samanthaclare from @HHLibService and we will be discussing emerging technologies and will be joined by members of the Emerging Technologies (ET?) group. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Please take a moment to introduce yourselves and perhaps say why you're interested in tonight's tweetchat #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Hi everyone! Holly from @LKSS_LKS here. I’m interested in tonight’s topic because I feel like my knowledge of emerging technologies is limited. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs We have a lot to get through in the next hour, so without further ado - our first question is.....What do you think are the key emerging technologies affecting healthcare libraries (in the next 5 years) #ukmedlibs
Caroline Storer @StorerCaroline @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs I'm Caroline, one of Emerging Technologies Group members
Caroline Storer @StorerCaroline #ukmedlibs artificial intelligence
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn I think machine learning / AI could have a impact on the way we search for information. And I think this will have a significant impact on our profession #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @yiwen_h @Librarian1703 will machine learning ever be able to replace that human touch and knowledge in understanding where a piece of evidence is important? (playing devil's advocate somewhat!) #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Question two is.....How can we find out which emerging technologies to look at/champion? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @yiwen_h @SueLaceybryant the British Library uses robotics to retrieve books! I am sure we could do that and create more space for those that use the library. #ukmedlibs (makes a note to speak to pharmacy!)
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @yiwen_h @Librarian1703 I think we could still have a vital role to play though, in ensuring that bias is not affecting search results for instance #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs and if that's the case - what will our role become? #ukmedlibs How can we adapt and develop our skills appropriately?
Caroline Storer @StorerCaroline @UKMedLibs @yiwen_h @SueLaceybryant #ukmedlibs I saw them in action a few weeks a go
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs - I think we also need to look to other industries to see what technologies are being used there - the NHS often seems to be a few steps behind other industries.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs ok so question three (which I think some of you are beginning to discuss anyway)..... Which emerging technologies might be ‘competition’ for library services and what can we do to address/harness these? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @tomroper so is this a case where we can utilise our skills to ensure that robot indexing and machine learning actually works properly? #ukmedlibs
Caroline Storer @StorerCaroline #ukmedlibs Q2 The Lancet Digital Health, Health Informatics Journal and Journal of Medical Internet Research good for published info.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs please remember to use the #ukmedlibs hashtag to stay in the conversation!
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @yiwen_h @Librarian1703 Yes the ethical implications do concern me, as much as I am excited about the positive effect AI will have on healthcare! @sharma_kriti did an amazing keynote on the subject at #CILIPconf 2019 #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @stackingbooks @yiwen_h @UKMedLibs @Librarian1703 We’ve seen a couple of examples of Learning & Development / Technology Enhanced Learning depts merging with Library & Knowledge Services already #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question four......What cost is there to library and knowledge services? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs sounds intriguing. Can we find out more? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question 5 - What are the opportunities for health libraries to embrace emerging technologies? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs can we create that opportunity for ourselves first? #ukmedlibs Is it that we wait too long sometimes and get left behind?
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @yiwen_h @samanthaclare @UKMedLibs @tomroper Not to mention that the pressure on frontline services leaves very little time to upskill staff to make them really confident in using technology. Although it is one of @NHSDigital priorities #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @SueLaceybryant:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @tomroper I have twitter and hootsuite on my laptop, AND my iphone to hand! #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @Librarian1703 Agreed. Hopeful that the Library&Information courses around the country are taking notices and adapting programmes appropriately #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question 6 I think (slightly lost track!) What value is added by library and knowledge services? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @SueLaceybryant:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @CILIPHLG:
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn RT @SueLaceybryant:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @Hollingtonn @stackingbooks @samanthaclare @yiwen_h @tomroper @nkenssous @wghlib @thecometlibrary agreed - I'd love to know how they got permission to do so - IT departments really don't seem to like being bypassed, even for the greater good. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs creating librarians who can code - the next generation of librarians? #ukmedlibs @ricpaul you'd be good here!
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question 7... What are the barriers to health libraries and librarians to using emerging technologies? #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Q6. We have many valuable skills that can be incorporated to support emerging technologies. But we must carve a place for ourselves. And we must invest in appropriate training & development. This could be quite the departure for the profession! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @stackingbooks @Hollingtonn @samanthaclare @yiwen_h @tomroper @nkenssous @wghlib @thecometlibrary this needs to be a case study I think. #ukmedlibs Share the methodology and case for doing so.
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @Librarian1703 That’s good to hear! We’re talking to UCL, hoping to promote our sector better. So hopefully this will translate in placements we are offering etc. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs As some of us are already talking about this topic during #ukmedlibs, here's question 8.... What training would help you to feel more confident and skilled in using technology?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs there's perhaps the perception that such "advanced" technologies are for OTHER people and not them. #ukmedlibs Emerging technologies will have to accommodate those people or we get them up to speed.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs our ninth and final #ukmedlibs question takes us a bit further into the future, stretch your imaginations.... What do you think are the key emerging technologies that will affect healthcare libraries (in the next 10-20 years)?
Caroline Storer @StorerCaroline @samanthaclare #ukmedlibs we also cannot assume people understand the risks and security associated with technology
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @yiwen_h @UKMedLibs I am working on some Library Carpentry events, hopefully held nationally! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @stackingbooks @yiwen_h @Librarian1703 sometimes it just takes a librarian to lead people by the hand and show them what's available and not to be afraid of it!? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs we're just coming up to 9pm now - thank you all for a stimulating chat - lots of food for thought there. Do keep chatting if the urge takes you! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs intriguing thought! I assume that means consultants salaries for all!?? #ukmedlibs
Caroline Storer @StorerCaroline #ukmedlibs Thanks @samanthaclare for hosting and everyone for participating.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs find out more about library carpentry here (it's not what you might think it is!) #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @stackingbooks:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs thank you all and particular thanks to @yiwen_h and the emerging technologies group! #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Thanks all! Well done @samanthaclare GREAT CHAT #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs thank you - the transcript will be available later this week. #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn For those of you part of CILIPs Leaders Network @SueLaceybryant will be doing a webinar about the Topol Review tomorrow! She’ll also be at the LKSS Forum on the 14/11 #ukmedlibs
