Good evening everyone! I have an ice breaker to start. What is your favourite pastry and your favourite scary movie? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
It's @LuceSinclair1 behind the chat tonight. Mine is apple pie and The Haunting of Bly Manor. Don't forget to use the hash tag #ukmedlibs

@UKMedLibs See? So bewildered, I forgot the hashtag #ukmedlibs

Q1) Prior to COVID-19, did your library offer online teaching and training as a core service? If so, what did you offer? And if not, was it something you were planning on offering? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@LibraryHentut Sorry to have thrown you off! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Definition of a pastry is: a dough of flour, fat, and water, used as a base and covering in baked dishes such as pies #ukmedlibs

@UKMedLibs A1 #ukmedlibs we didn’t offer online training/teaching as a core service. We had looked at induction videos (and have now got two induction videos available).
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
A1 #ukmedlibs Nearly all f2f teaching was in person apart from a few sessions to support distance learners. We had developed and piloted (with library staff) a 5 week a-synchronous course on searching for systematic reviews. We were considering remote 1-2-1s
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@LibraryHentut Induction videos are a another good way to offer online learning. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@KarenPooleUK I would be interested in learning more about your course on searching for systematic reviews if that would be ok. Sounds excellent! #ukmedlibs
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
A1 #ukmedlibs (2/2) what we did have was plenty of e-learning including narrated videos, screen capture, quizzes etc.

@UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs Based initially on existing e-learning, with additional activities & individual & peer exercises developed. Ran once during lockdown but due to return to campus work etc we'll have to wait to do it again. Needs work but it's promising! DM if you want to talk more.
⭐️ Emma Halford 💙 @LibraryHentut
@liberkiely #ukmedlibs A1 same here - no computers with cameras/sound in the library and the end users didn’t (still don’t!) have the right tech either. It’s a real barrier.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
RT @samanthaclare:
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
A2. #ukmedlibs Lots of consideration around online teaching pedagogy - how do standard f2f activities transfer (now lots of use of chat for responses and questions), use of small group to encourage discussion. We co-teach much more.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Having had a read through the answers...seems like pre-COVID online training was considered for community staff and main barrier is tech? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
RT @yiwen_h:
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@notsoloftytofty #UKmedlibs A2 yes, we are also co-teaching much more. Really important to have someone to handle the chat, allow breakout spaces to be used for small group work. We're also using Padlet a lot.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@yiwen_h The screen sharing tool is fantastic. Closest thing I can think of to having someone sat next to you #ukmedlibs

@UKMedLibs A2 #ukmedlibs very slowly! Lots of teaching sessions were cancelled early on because of service pressures. 1-1 training has little take-up online but department teaching sessions have worked better. Need 2 lib staff though, to monitor chat and answer questions.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@samanthaclare @ricpaul Training in person can be nerve wracking enough, online just adds a whole new level to it #ukmedlibs
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@liberkiely #ukmedlibs A2 I has assumed initially that most people would have cameras on (but of course for many reasons they don't) and many aren't happy to unmute in larger groups so definitely finding ways to check in has been really important!

@UKMedLibs A3 #ukmedlibs I’ve become much more aware of accessibilty issues. The webinar from the Open University library team on pivoting your teaching was brilliantly helpful. Also, slowing things down, allowing for distractions in trainees environment.
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
A3 #ukmedlibs I've attended some good training provided by institution, lots of individual reflection on how sessions are going, learning from colleagues, and working in team to develop sessions. Doing 1-2-1s really helped. Main thing has been getting out there and trying stuff!

Q4) What has worked well with online sessions? #UKmedlibs
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@scaredycait @yiwen_h @samanthaclare @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs we've had this work quite well in group sessions. Ask for a volunteer to share search template & whole group make suggestions for synonyms etc. Also a volunteer to share screen and do search. Learners feedback this good 'if they can do it, I can'; not just for experts!
⭐️ Emma Halford 💙 @LibraryHentut
@UKMedLibs A4 #ukmedlibs getting back-up from colleagues to help with logistics and share ideas about how sessions need to be adapted. Difficult to spot/anticipate issues on your own. Keeping it simple to start with and then trying new ideas as confidence/familiarity improves.
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@CILIPHLG #ukmedlibs A4 - we've flipped ours, learners watch (or should watch) 2 narrated ppt plus optional external short video) and read article before attending. We then use 60-90 min session to go through CASP checklist and apply learning to appraising article.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Q5)And what has gone wrong? #ukmedlibs

@UKMedLibs A5 #ukmedlibs I had to completely adapt my health literacy session very rapidly when the activities just didn’t get enough buy-in online. Sometimes it’s hard to quickly build a sufficient rapport with users when you can’t see or hear them!
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@UKMedLibs Q5 So much! MS Teams having a hissy fit - today it didn't want to give me chat - laptop/connection issues; no responses when you ask a question 'is anybody there?' #ukmedlibs

@UKMedLibs A6 #ukmedlibs no, I don’t prefer it, but I think I am still learning a lot and can get much better at it. I think our users thrive on face-to-face contact and I would be interested to know what their reflections are. Would rather have online teaching than nothing at all.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Q7) final question: What advice would you offer librarians/ library services who are new to offering online training/ teaching? #ukmedlibs

@UKMedLibs A7 #ukmedlibs practice, try the tech out first if you can, talk to other librarians/teachers who are delivering online sessions. Find out as much as you can about the needs of the people you are training and adapt sessions accordingly.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Shadowing is also an excellent idea. Is anyone offering online shadowing opportunities? #ukmedlibs

RT @RuthCarlyle: A7. With training online:
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@UKMedLibs A7 Prepare but don't think it must be perfect. Practice, shadow sessions, get colleagues to give you feedback, reflect on when training you have attended has worked best, start small & with tech you're comfortable with. If you work in a team and it's possible co-teach. #ukmedlibs

@samanthaclare @notsoloftytofty A7 #ukmedlibs I found it can be quite liberating to try out new ideas for teaching activites from the comfort of being nowhere near the poor participants!
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs currently all webinar sessions are being done by teaching librarians but our Senior Library Assistants are being encouraged to shadow as starting point before delivering some content.
⭐️ Emma Halford 💙 @LibraryHentut
@UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs thank you so much. Can’t wait to do another online teaching session now!
Karen Poole @KarenPooleUK
@scaredycait Yes! When first planning our online db search session we set out with the aim of 60mins of content as we knew it would overrun in places and we weren't sure which bits. Hopefully meant 90min session then felt relatively well paced. Still working on how much to include! #UKmedlibs
