Good evening, welcome to tonight’s chat on discovery systems. @tomroper here, hiding behind the #ukmedlibs mask. Please introduce yourselves in a tweet (with the hashtag)
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann
@UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs hello I’m louise Levitt, assistant librarian at West Middlesex university hospital
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Our first question, #ukmedlibs Q1: Does your library have a discovery system? If not, are you considering one?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Excellent, welcome everyone #ukmedlibs We’ve gone to town with the questions, so do get stuck in
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann
@UKMedLibs Q1. We are currently purchasing ebsco discovery tool #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs EBSCO does seem to have the most NHS installations, at least. Do we have anyone from HE/Royal Colleges, other health libraries here tonight?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q2: What do you hope a discovery system will achieve? How can discovery systems offer our users a better experience?
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann
Q2. The hope is to increase usage of resources and to improve the overall user experience by having one access point #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
@samanthaclare @kayebags Yes, there seems to be good evidence for this. The first is clearly desirable. Is the second? #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q3 How do you see the relationship between discovery of digital and print resources? Should both be findable in a discovery system?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
Interesting point: how could you tell? #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann
Q3 we will be plugging in our catalogue so as to make our print collection accessible #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q4 If you’ve used a discovery system, how easy or labour –intensive is it to manage and maintain?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q5 What can we learn from discovery systems in use in higher education? And NHS Wales and Scotland?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q6 What else could discovery systems do? Current awareness?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q7 Are discovery systems better suited to general collections covering the whole of human knowledge, and less suited to medical information?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q8 Do they really overcome multiple logins?
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann
@UKMedLibs Q8. I hope so! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q9 Why not use Google and or SciHub?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
“Google based practice” Splendid coinage #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q10 National, regional or local?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
A provocative remark, we know. But that’s what the user will (and does) ask #ukmedlibs
Louise Levitt @LouiseWann
Q10 national but with the capability to administer and plug in local resources #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Q11 How do we want to see our discovery systems evolve?
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs Thanks everyone. An excellent chat. The transcript and analytics will be up in the morning.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
And special #ukmedlibs wishes to team member @Hollingtonn, new mother of Aurora, and to @LuceSinclair1 who was to have lead this chat but is stricken with a lurgy, to use a medical term
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs
#ukmedlibs The transcript carries on capturing your bon mots and aperçus till 9.15, so keep going by all means, but I’ve got a chicken gratin calling me
#ukmedlibs content from Twitter.
