ISSG Search Filters Resource @ISSG_Filters RT @LAyiku:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs chatter starts soon! Grab a drink, a snack, get comfy!
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant @UKMedLibs Ginger tea at the, ready #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs so are you all comfy now? Your host for the evening is @samanthaclare - please do introduce yourselves and get ready for a great evening! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question one coming up shortly - do say hello to your fellow tweeps! Welcome to anyone who is new here tonight - the more the merrier. #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare Evening all #ukmedlibs. @SueLaceybryant here. National lead @NHS_HealthEdEng
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Of course, the ONE rule is that you must use our hashtag --------> #ukmedlibs That way people can follow along and everything will be collected up for sharing via @symplur for reading later.
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Hi everyone! I’m Holly from HEE #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs so question one is here..... #ukmedlibs https://t.co/epR8cGpjCW
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @archelina @samanthaclare that's not uncommon! We're good at juggling things. #UKmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Q1 Career progression? Seeing where you can go; enjoying the work. Focus on what's needed. Career planning? Valuing personal strengths, stretching current role to broaden/deepen experience. Read, network, write, scan horizon for new skills needed. Invest in own CPD #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn A1. I think career progression or planning is a great thing. I think it means having an idea of where you want to go & taking advantage of all the development opportunities you are given. But I also think you should be flexible! And realistic. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @tomroper good point as ever @tomroper so perhaps for others there is not always an element of planning or possibly planning has more to do with where family and home life is? #ukmedlibs
Eli Harriss @eliharriss Hello! Eli from @BodleianHCL sporadically participating in #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @archelina perhaps not everybody has an active plan? The word "career" doesn't mean the same to everybody. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs and remembering hashtags too! 😁
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs very good point here from @abombolo - plans are not static things, they change with circumstances, experiences, reflection, etc! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Question two now....... #ukmedlibs https://t.co/NiEsoo7BdC
Eli Harriss @eliharriss #ukmedlibs Q1. It means something that I've never quite figured out. It means something that happens to other people. It means having the same job title for a decade, while the job has changed radically.
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn @abombolo Yes I think that’s so true! Your priorities change as you grow in to your career #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Agreed - and cobsider how will our values play through in what others see in our work and the value we add - to the team - The organisation - The client #ukmedlibs https://t.co/pyY3OH9B8t
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Q2. #ukmedlibs Career pathways are rarely a vertical ladder. Maybe consider 'career lattice' not ladder. So it's a mix of horizontal & vertical rungs. Helpful to consider focussing on personal growth which may lead to career growth too. Reflection & CPD are key throughout career
Eli Harriss @eliharriss @samanthaclare @archelina @UKMedLibs @tomroper I'd have loved to go for Tom's job and move Brighton-wards. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs or perhaps to rephrase - what would you say to your younger self if you were to start out again? #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Yes, many successful people I know have done this and it’s something I encourage for professional growth if the situation calls for it #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @archelina @eliharriss what's that saying again? Something like - if you want to make god laugh, tell her your plans! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @abombolo that's a very large net to throw out though - some may prefer to focus on a few things to start with otherwise it can get overwhelming. #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn A2. This may seem a bit party pooper-ish of me but I think it’s important to keep in mind that we’re a small profession, with not a huge amount of movement up. That’s why sideways steps or different sectors may be a benefit #ukmedlibs
Eli Harriss @eliharriss #ukmedlibs Q2. I was mentored by a colleague when I joined the Bodleian Health Care Libraries, someone who encouraged me to send in conference abstracts, say yes to everything. That was a great start. Nowadays... that drive and energy is essential
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @alisonday3 @samanthaclare @archelina @tomroper that's fabulous - you never know where a move or unexpected circumstance will take you! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs be brave and bold! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Question three seems apt as we're beginning to talk about experience....... #ukmedlibs https://t.co/pr1m9bwRJi
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @JoWood04 wise words there Jo. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @scaredycait and do you see that as a benefit or a hindrance? #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant To infinity and beyond #ukmedlibs https://t.co/Am3RfjEyN6
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @SueLaceybryant: To infinity and beyond #ukmedlibs https://t.co/Am3RfjEyN6
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @ria_ze hello - come on in - whether you stay for five minutes or the whole hour is fine! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs very good point - just because you're new in the role doesn't mean you don't have a lot to offer a project or initiative. #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Q3. Take advantage of all opportunities thrown your way! Do CPD, join groups, take on projects, take leadership or management course, learn skills like coaching and show your enthusiasm #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs hosting a chat is great fun - the only thing is when people start answering questions that haven't even been asked yet!! 🤣#ukmedlibs Seriously though - great conversations here - keep it up!
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @scaredycait discovering what you enjoy (and don't!) is a real bonus. #ukmedlibs
Eli Harriss @eliharriss #ukmedlibs Shadowing the UHMLG treasurer would be an excellent way to learn about financial management& budgets, something that often comes up in job specs, something hard to learn on the job. Someone else will get that honour! For line management - mentor someone. It's fun.
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs so what do we mean by "careers" these days? #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant A3 #ukmedlibs Agree. At work put hand up for new projects, volunteer in your professional network - not least @CILIPHLG & @UHMLG #ukmedlibs Easy to overlook relevance of skills we gain across our lives - whether Playgroup committee, choir, bookclub etc & Apply for other jobs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @eliharriss: #ukmedlibs Shadowing the UHMLG treasurer would be an excellent way to learn about financial management& budgets, something that often comes up in job specs, something hard to learn on the job. Someone else will get that honour! For line management - mentor someone. It's fun.
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn Q3. Also, super important, mentors (as I saw @alisonday3 mention). I had a great mentor for chartership but I’ve been so lucky to have some amazing informal mentors. They might not even consider themselves that but their support has been invaluable. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question four (I need to keep up with you lot!) ........ #ukmedlibs https://t.co/eC0acTcpq1
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @SueLaceybryant @scaredycait there's no doubt you've found yours Sue! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @JoWood04 we welcome EVERYBODY!!! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs absolutely - always worth finding out what doesn't suit you. #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant @UKMedLibs @scaredycait I did @samanthaclare How lucky was I. x #ukmedlibs https://t.co/2xTLzHmXYt
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @JoWood04 very true - @samanthaclare admits she was lucky to have a near vertical path. #ukmedlibs (although that meant staying in one place for 13 years)
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs good point - it can be disheartening to try and focus on a straight path. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @JoWood04 EVERYBODY!!!! #ukmedlibs https://t.co/VnsBIYvVky
Eli Harriss @eliharriss #ukmedlibs Q4 I tried to move up, tried to move sideways, didn't get those posts, not sure what's next. I respect colleagues who change roles and develop, learn, change, especially depending on what's right for them and their families. Envious, moi?
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn A4. Definitely! I think it can be enormously beneficial and something that moved me in to health. Grateful I took the chance. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs we're a very collegiate bunch and that's why I love it so much. #ukmedlibs
Jillian Ireland @jcmireland I’m going to quote you in a presentation for @MidwivesRGU in March Alison - my sentiments exactly (and it took a knowledge specialist to formulate into words!) @Mindful_Midwife
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs and so question five...... #ukmedlibs https://t.co/rjwbvK7sLB
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant A4 Moving sideways, applying skills into new roles is invaluable, expands knowledge & skills. #informationskills are portable. Build confidence to look for more senior roles If you want one. There are different phases in life #ukmedlibs Values matter, valuing what we do counts
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant @abombolo Important to get better at telling that story. Watch how others in the organisation do that @abombolo #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @scaredycait @eliharriss @tomroper never phrased badly - you SHOULD write - perhaps not today, but one day. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs question six.... #ukmedlibs https://t.co/XFpiApPbJ9
Eli Harriss @eliharriss #ukmedlibs Q5 - Most people in this sector I know of have moved sideways. One of my colleagues has gone up and up in the same organisation. I suspect I'd have to leave to go up while remaining in the glorious field of health librarianship
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant @Sybil_Ramkin @UKMedLibs And give a breathing space; time to reflect #ukmedlibs
Sarah @ADigitalWitch A4 I’ve just taken the decision to move out of my current role, to focus on Academic so it helps me move forwards eventually. Im worried it’s the wrong decision even though everyone says it’s not - I think this is the way I be taught to think. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs I think that many people would read this even at 7/6! 🤣 #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn A5. I think that depends on a lot of factors. How much you like the organisation, your job and how long you’re willing to wait #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs fifteen minutes left and I give you question seven..... #ukmedlibs https://t.co/5m1gWMA4m0
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant #ukmedlibs Q5 Mostly Yes, in my experience. I got one regrading in first 10 years. Found I also needed to move in and out of other, related sectors, and indeed disciplines, expanding my skillset and range of responsibilities, as well as to other organisations.
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn A6. All the best managers I’ve had (& I’ve been lucky enough to have quite a few) have always looked for opportunities or me to grow. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @SueLaceybryant no don't tell me that!! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs I did do question six - @SueLaceybryant - you had me going there! #ukmedlibs
Eli Harriss @eliharriss #UKmedlibs Q6 - about managers encouraging staff with careers - I've been encouraged to join groups such as the mighty UHMLG, attend training, go to conferences (esp when I've got a sponsored place). It goes back to the Q1&2 answers, planning/new entrants. finding opportunities
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs RT @LibraryLyns:
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Q7. To encourage cross-sector career progression? Be curious. Learn as much as possible about yourself, assess your portable skills, follow your interests. Learn about the sector. Network There are so many roles in which knowledge specialists can add value #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs now that I reflect on that question - I am not sure why I asked it - do people WANT to move out of the health sector or are we inviting people in? #ukmedlibs
book up! @bookupblog Completely agree with this! Success looks different for everyone and there are so many different paths, crossroads and roundabouts 😊 🚗 #ukmedlibs
book up! @bookupblog RT @abombolo:
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs the hour is very nearly upon us so here is the last question of the session.......#ukmedlibs (something else being - not the job role you're currently doing!) https://t.co/TS8mv0Gq5W
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Can't type read fast enough @ukmex Q6. Give focused time to staff appraisal to encorage career planning. Use @CILIP PKSB to focus discussion on skills. Prompt & monitor prof. development plans. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @abombolo that must be very tough. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs of course, this does assume that people are looking to do something else - that may not necessarily be true either. #ukmedlibs
book up! @bookupblog I'd agree with this from my own experience - you can have a better chance of a promotion if you are willing to change organisation. Libraries seem to be reluctant to promote from within sometimes 🤷♀️ #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant A6. #ukmedlibs Q6. Managers can also help by reaching unto other parts of your organisation to create new opportunities.olus When staff leave, celebrate success in helping them progress & encourage them to come back to the sector soon #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Top skills to address for progressing to more senior roles. Need to know how to manage resource confidently #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @JoWood04 indeed - on both counts! #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs and now it is 9pm. Thank you all for such an invigorating chat - always worth coming along! Good night folks. #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn A8. Speak to the person doing the role you want, speak to the hiring manager. Make your ambitions known. #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs the transcript and statistics will be available on our blog in the next few days #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs @JoWood04 do come again!! #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant Q8. Be curious. Use all your information & networking skills to find out more, be interesting, be interested, understand your CPD needs, articulate your skills. Enjoy the work. Believe in its value. Believe in your professional skills. Mostly Believe in yourself. #ukmedlibs
Holly Case Wyatt @Hollingtonn That was a great discussion @samanthaclare! Well done and thank you for leading #ukmedlibs
UKMedLibs @UKMedLibs Believe in yourself - wise words indeed from @SueLaceybryant #ukmedlibs
book up! @bookupblog @scaredycait @eliharriss @tomroper Definitely write something! People don't realise how much interesting stuff they have to share from their experiences - it can really help others! #ukmedlibs
book up! @bookupblog "Values matter, valuing what we do counts" LOVE this @SueLaceybryant #ukmedlibs
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant A6. Really important to refkect, be objective & get better at identifying own skulls. Use #PKSB @CILIPinfo https://t.co/8PXHdPRgD6
book up! @bookupblog RT @alisonday3:
Sue Lacey Bryant FCLIP @SueLaceybryant @UKMedLibs Where did that hour go! Thank you #ukmedlibs @UKMedLibs @samanthaclare Another example of our collegiate profession
book up! @bookupblog RT @Hollingtonn: A1. I think career progression or planning is a great thing. I think it means having an idea of where you want to go & taking advantage of all the development opportunities you are given. But I also think you should be flexible! And realistic. #ukmedlibs
