Priya Kantesaria, MD @pskantesaria
@womeninmedchat @petradMD @BetaMomma Hi everyone! Priya, M2 at New Jersey Medical School. I just hoped off a conference call and I'm raring to go! I loved my first #womeninmedicine chat so much last week, it's officially in the calendar!

Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@womeninmedchat The biggest budget for me is time off for conferences versus time off for vacation with my family. I do my specialty societ(ies) as I have 2. And a #womeninmedicine conference every year. Last year it was @feminemtweets
Diana Cejas, MD, MPH @DianaCejasMD
@womeninmedchat @petradMD @BetaMomma Hi I'm Diana! A child neurologist in NC. Happy to be here again! #WomenInMedicine
Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@womeninmedchat A1 #WomeninMedicine priorities : when I am presenting, conferences with good networking opportunities, somewhere I want to visit!
Jennifer Hunt MD @drjenniferhunt
@womeninmedchat Q1 budget is another issue. In my younger days, I shared a lot of rooms and ate all the free food I could find! #womeninmedicine
Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@womeninmedchat @feminemtweets The year previously it was PMG conference which was awesome #WomeninMedicine
Karen Cox @kcoxseig
RT @SoniaMKhunkhun: I finally did it. In a room full of trainees&senior #criticalcare doctors I told them to stop saying "withdraw care"&asked they correct anyone who uses these words. We NEVER stop caring. Our patients deserve the best care&words #WordsMatter #hpm #PalliativeCare #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/NrXLUaN1ig
Dr. Suzy @DrSuzyFeigofsky
@womeninmedchat A1: I will try and go to my annual society meeting, or a meeting on a topic I am interested in. We have a CME stipend at work which helps. #WomeninMedicine
Apoorve Nayyar @apoorvenayyar
@drpallicare @womeninmedchat @petradMD @BetaMomma Hi all, Apoorve, breast surgery research fellow at UNC. Looking forward to this interesting chat #WomenInMedicine

Roxana Daneshjou MD/PhD @RoxanaDaneshjou
@womeninmedchat Q1: Back in my PhD days, I would go to the conferences that my lab would go to. Now I go where much of our faculty goes - particularly our large professional conference. But I looooooove scientific conferences most, so those are the ones I seek out. #womeninmedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
A1 I try to go to 1 of the major conferences for IM/hospital medicine, either SHM or ACP, and as of last year 1 specifically catering to #WomenInMedicine. Budgeting isn’t much of an issue since I’m an attending with no kids plus get $1000 cme stipend
Apoorve Nayyar @apoorvenayyar

Amanda S. Xi, MD @amandasximd
@womeninmedchat A1a: Admittedly, I've overloaded my conference schedule through leadership positions... so I go to all of the ones I plan through @amwadoctors and @acgme. Leadership/presentations helped me get to my specialty meeting (@ASALifeline #ANES18). #womeninmedicine
Ilana Krumm @IlanaKrumm
@womeninmedchat A1: as a resident I struggle with imposter syndrome + guilt of taking time off to go to conferences. I talk myself out of registering bc I use the excuse “it’s not worth it” so I’d like to see how others decide which are worth it. #WomeninMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@womeninmedchat Hence, this year, one for faculty development as I want to further my role in UME (AAMC) and one for professional knowledge and meeting “others like me.” (ACP) #WomeninMedicine
Shikha Jain MD, FACP @ShikhaJainMD
@LaurenKuwikMD @womeninmedchat @feminemtweets This year come to our Women In Medicine Summit! #womeninmedicine https://t.co/UDQNxJBSvu
Jennifer Hunt MD @drjenniferhunt
@womeninmedchat Actually, lack of time. At one point I was presenting at every major path conference and it was just too much! #womeninmedicine
Mei Lin Bissonnette MD PhD FRCPC @BCRenalPath
@womeninmedchat A1: it’s easy for #RenalPath because we’re such a small community and have limited conferences to attend. The flip side is myself and my colleagues all need to attend the same things at the same time #WomenInMedicine
Joannie Yeh MD (she/her) @BetaMomma
@NadiaJamilMD @womeninmedchat @petradMD Yes! @petradMD does an amazing job organizing the chats and always love hearing from so many different voices in #womeninmedicine
Michelle Rheault @rheault_m
@womeninmedchat Q1:I attend one conference for networking in my small field (@ASPNeph) and a second for learning latest science and higher stress networking (@ASNKidney) #WomenInMedicine
Nadia Jamil, M.D. @NadiaJamilMD
@womeninmedchat A1: as an IM resident, I have to use vacation time and personal funds for non-ACP conferences, so at this time I’m focusing on endo ones. As a med student I got to go to the Congress on Women’s Health in DC! #WomenInMedicine
Claudia Chou, MD @czchou
@womeninmedchat A1: I've been lucky in training to receive funds for accepted abstracts and for a couple attendance trips. This year I'm hoping to volunteer as a monitor to have attendance covered for a major conference #WomenInMedicine
Preeti R. John MD, MPH, FACS, FCCM, CPE, HEC-C @preeti_john
RT @TiffanyLovePhD: I’m finally telling my story. Thank you @RUBraveEnough for giving me the opportunity to share my story. Thank you @JulieSilverMD @DrLindaMD @choo_ek & all of the #WomenInMedicine for encouraging, supporting & empowering me to have the courage #BeEthical #healthcare #ExecutiveTime
Amanda S. Xi, MD @amandasximd
@womeninmedchat A1b: Budgeting has been made easier through support for my leadership/planning efforts as well as residency program support. For example, so excited for @SCCM & seeing @RanaAwdish in a week (thx to my residency for $$$ support!). #womeninmedicine
Sanjana Mathur @teaandreverie
@womeninmedchat A1. Learning opportunities & networking are the main drivers. I think about how I can best invest my time and money. If its about something I'm passionate about I start saving up #WomenInMedicine
Shikha Jain MD, FACP @ShikhaJainMD
@womeninmedchat A1 I try to do one conference for oncology and one for leadership or women in medicine annually. It’s hard with young kids though! #womeninmedicine
Susan Hingle @SusanHingle
@womeninmedchat A1: Find what inspires you! Conferences are a great place to not only learn but to recharge, reconnect, connect and come away ready to rock and rule! Who runs the world- girls! #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/7xAW3qOnhc
Laura Desveaux, PhD @lauradesveaux
@womeninmedchat A1: I go when I am presenting so I submit to conferences where I have an interest in the content & location. I also pick one professional development conference/yr (vs scientific). Grant funding or work pays for me to present, and sometimes PD. #WomenInMedicine
Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@Wickersham_Eliz @womeninmedchat Love the STFM conference! This Spring it is in Toronto #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Hunt MD @drjenniferhunt
@womeninmedchat A1 location almost never matters to me. Conference time is work time for me and networking after hours is mandatory. I usually hardly leave the venue. #womeninmedicine
Dr. Carri Glide-Hurst @CGlideHurst
@womeninmedchat A1: I am fortunate to travel frequently due to invited panels that are funded. Earlier in my career, I shared a hotel room which was fun & good for relationship building. Now we have a set allowance that covers ~2 conf annually & I focus on high yield confs. #womeninmedicine
Amanda S. Xi, MD @amandasximd
@womeninmedchat A1c: I also like to mention that a lot of conferences acknowledge how hard it is for trainees to find funds, so @AMWADoctors provides travel grants for #medstudents and residents. I am volunteering @SCCM to help offset registration costs. #womeninmedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat A1. I typically go to both GI societies annual meetings (talks, committees, etc), then a handful of trips due to education roles. If I have time/days for more trips, I look to find ones that will help me grow in some way. #WomenInMedicine
Marjorie Stiegler MD @DrMStiegler
@womeninmedchat A1. I go to the conferences that invite me to speak, pay my expenses, and/or get me totally outside of my usual 'expert' zone so I can really learn something new! CME or not, I want professional and personal value. #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Caputo-Seidler, MD @jennifermcaputo
@LaurenKuwikMD @womeninmedchat @feminemtweets Yes, enough time off can be a struggle. I’m a hospitalist and all the major conferences I was interested in this year fall on my weeks on service #womeninmedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat A1. Good content, learn a lot, no airfare, affordable, family friendly or commute from home #WomenInMedicine
Priya Kantesaria, MD @pskantesaria
@womeninmedchat A1: As a medical student, conference costs is a major deciding factor. Last year I was lucky enough to be appointed to a rep role at my school where the conference fee for students was $500. Without the support of my school, it would be impossible. #WomenInMedicine
Jack Iwashyna🫁 @iwashyna
RT @womeninmedchat: Alright everyone it is time for Q1: How do you choose which conferences to go to, how do you budget for them? #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/6HSV5MBsd7

Susan Hingle @SusanHingle
@womeninmedchat A1: Don’t be afraid to ask for monetary assistance to attend conferences. There may be funding available. #WomeninMedicine https://t.co/Ia62FWgz2g
Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@ShikhaJainMD @womeninmedchat @feminemtweets I haven’t decided yet. This time frame would work tho. Also @RUBraveEnough Conference looks incredible as well as the @howeinahurry Women wellness conference in Caymen Islands #womeninmedicine
Mamata Majmundar @MajmundarMD
@womeninmedchat A1: Topic relevance, networking opportunities, and location. Plan in advance for 2-3 convergences a year. #WomenInMedicine
Apoorve Nayyar @apoorvenayyar
RT @amandasxi: @womeninmedchat A1c: @womeninmedchat A1c: I also like to mention that a lot of conferences acknowledge how hard it is for trainees to find funds, so @AMWADoctors provides travel grants for #medstudents and residents. I am volunteering @SCCM to help offset registration costs. #womeninmedicine
Marjorie Stiegler MD @DrMStiegler
@womeninmedchat A1 Also, I remember that conferences are potentially professional tax deductions regardless of CME or institutional budget. #WomeninMedicine
Dr. Suzy @DrSuzyFeigofsky
@ShikhaJainMD @womeninmedchat I am finding that conferences are becoming more “kid friendly” in the last year. I hope this trend continues #WomenInMedicine
Michelle Rheault @rheault_m
@womeninmedchat @ASPNeph @ASNKidney A1 It's so important to have face time with colleagues. So many committee have in person meetings at conferences. If not there, miss out on opportunities. #WomenInMedicine
Kanika Monga, MD @DrKanikaMonga
@womeninmedchat A1: lucky that my division helps pay for conferences, and also gives us 7 days that we can spend on conferences! Also, @ACRheum provides scholarships! 🙏🏽 A component of conferences is networking! I look at the agenda/topics to decide which ones to attend.. #womeninmedicine
#WomenInMedicine Chat @womeninmedchat
Time for Q2: How do you prepare to go to a conference? (ie: battling imposter syndrome, review the session topics and map out which ones to go to, list out which attendees and speakers you want to chat with, stake out local attractions and restaurants to try) #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/If7cSWieNe
Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@wonderparent007 @womeninmedchat @feminemtweets There was. And it was amazing. And the only time they did it. Wish Hala and Dina would bring it back @PhysicianMomsGp #WomenInMedicine
Priya Kantesaria, MD @pskantesaria
@womeninmedchat A1.2 - I do find myself also searching for conferences that are low/no fee for students. For example, policy conferences (especially those run by the AMA) are no cost for members. I find that these types of conferences bring a wider variety of students! #WomenInMedicine
Dr. Atasha Jordan, MBA @AtashaJordan
@womeninmedchat A1: I use 2 major criteria when choosing which conferences to go to: 1) Is it on a topic I'm deeply interested in that relates to my future career? These get priority so that I can learn more and network with others in the field #WomenInMedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat A1. I often have to plan a whole year in advance for meetings to: 1) make sure I have enough days; 2) get time blocked at work; 3) work around kids’ and husband’s schedule. Warm venues with ☀️🌴in winter a ➕! #WomenInMedicine
Susan Hingle @SusanHingle
@womeninmedchat A1: Prioritize! #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/yqslIJxo2H

Sandra D. King, MS.Ed.Tech @sandra_king2

Thank you @JulieSilverMD @DrLindaMD @choo_ek & all of the #WomenInMedicine for encouraging, supporting & empowering me to have the courage #BeEthical #healthcare #ExecutiveTime
Priya Kantesaria, MD @pskantesaria
@womeninmedchat A1.3 - Sadly, ancillary fees like hotels, flights, and food can often be a secret budget breaker. I just get really good at finding deals then... or budgeting a little tighter for the next month #womeninmedicine
COMSEP @COMSEPediatrics

Elissa Fory @ekfory
@womeninmedchat A1: Between childcare, vacation, service time (balancing w partners needs for conferences too), it’s usually 2 per year. $$ less of an issue than time/availability. Try to rotate major mtngs. Also hubby in same specialty so that makes it hard w kids. #WomenInMedicine
Marguerite Duane @mduanemd
@womeninmedchat @petradMD @BetaMomma A1. As med student I was involved in @aafp leadership so I went to related conferences. Now I primarily go to conferences related to my work @FACTS_Fertility to educate colleagues about health applications of #FertilityAwareness so #FamilyMedicine #Ob & #ACNM #WomenInMedicine
Abby Spencer, MD, MS, FACP @abbyWUim
They are all that (award-winning outstanding cardiologists, amazing moms)AND all 3 of these fabulous #WomenInMedicine & #WomenInCardiology are @CleClinicMD #CCIMRPalum!!@CCF_IMCHIEFS @NadeenFaza @rooshaparikh @szkhalaf Looks like cardiology IS for women! So proud of these ladies!
Dr. Jennifer Chen, MD FAAP 林 明 堯 @DrJenChen4kids
@womeninmedchat T1: Trainees can often get funding for at least once conference (esp if presenting) or can apply for scholarships (eg through @AAPSOPT) Last year I went to PAS, PHM, and @AAPexperieNCE, all relevant to #tweetiatricians #womeninmedicine
Amy Oxentenko MD @AmyOxentenkoMD
@womeninmedchat @petradMD @BetaMomma Hello all! It has been a number of weeks since I could connect on a Sunday night! Have missed you all! GI doc and IM PD at Mayo! In refueling mode after interview season! #WomenInMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@womeninmedchat So I’m trying to adjust attitudes. (2/2) #WomeninMedicine
Dr. Atasha Jordan, MBA @AtashaJordan
@womeninmedchat A1: 2) Is the conference on a topic that I'm interested in solely for the sake of recreational learning? These get deprioritized, but I go when the registration costs are low and/or the conference is in a city near me. #WomenInMedicine
R Klein @RKleinMD
@womeninmedchat A1. always go to one bc I am presenting or committees. If I can squeeze in another I try bc it’s way more fun to just go and see stuff. But hard juggle the schedule as my husband is a PhD so has mult conferences. #WomenInMedicine
Claudia Chou, MD @czchou
@womeninmedchat A2: I try to scope out what I'm interested in and what might help me grow outside my specialities. I find friends/colleagues who might be attending. Also, I love some of the wellness activities like early morning yoga! #WomenInMedicine
Susan Hingle @SusanHingle
@womeninmedchat A1: #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/Pb7T7g6NxH

Dr. Carri Glide-Hurst @CGlideHurst
@womeninmedchat A2: I wish! I used to do this--now my conferences & pre-meeting work are so packed (thankful--not complaining!) that I finish slides on flights there and download the meeting app when I show up. Luckily my colleagues have me covered for restaurant planning! #womeninmedicine
Jen Williams 🇦🇺👩🏽‍⚕️ @DrJenWilliams
@womeninmedchat In Australia doctors in the public system have good access to (paid) professional development leave, which certainly helps with conference attendance! How about other countries? #womeninmedicine #goaussie #straya
Joannie Yeh MD (she/her) @BetaMomma
RT @amandasxi: @womeninmedchat A1c: @womeninmedchat A1c: I also like to mention that a lot of conferences acknowledge how hard it is for trainees to find funds, so @AMWADoctors provides travel grants for #medstudents and residents. Roxana Daneshjou MD/PhD @RoxanaDaneshjou
@womeninmedchat Q2: I look at the program and make a list of the speakers/sessions I want to attend. Sometimes I look up relevant papers to those sessions. I definitely always look up local attractions. :) #womeninmedicine
Priya Kantesaria, MD @pskantesaria
@womeninmedchat A2: For me it's all about 2 things: will this conference enlighten me or will this conference embolden me to become a better student doctor. Based on what i'm aiming to get from the conference I make my game plan. #WomenInMedicine
Susan Hingle @SusanHingle
@womeninmedchat A1: #WomenInMedicine Don’t be afraid to try out new conferences! You may make some amazing connections and open your mind to new possibilities!
Lauren Kuwik MD @LaurenKuwikMD
@RUBraveEnough @ShikhaJainMD @womeninmedchat @feminemtweets @howeinahurry I love what you’re tweeting from Caymen Islands - that conference looked incredible and powerhouse lineup of #womeninmedicine. Was too quick for me to pull it off when I found out about it.
Michelle Rheault @rheault_m
@womeninmedchat A2: First, I block out meetings with people, then fill in the rest with sessions if there's time. Always realistic about working in down time. People are exhausting. #WomenInMedicine
Kanika Monga, MD @DrKanikaMonga
@womeninmedchat A2: By being realistic and just to my attention span! I plan an itinerary before but definitely am open to changing it around.. exploring the city/meeting friends/ food (yelp!) is a must.. also, I try to keep my routine with getting in work outs! #womeninmedicine
Jessica Hane, MD @jhanemd
@womeninmedchat A2. I try to plan ahead as there are often so many interesting sessions. That being said, I once was given the advice to not be so tied to a list of sessions that you miss out on, say, an interesting conversation started during the coffee break. #WomenInMedicine
Paneez Khoury, MD (she/her) @KhouryMD
@womeninmedchat I go to my specialties academy conference and an international one that is in my scientific area. I also attend other ones that I’m speaking at but I have dreams of branching out to other fun topics, just not enough time or $$ #WomeninMedicine
Roxana Daneshjou MD/PhD @RoxanaDaneshjou
@womeninmedchat Q2: If I know I have friends attending the conference that I don't regularly see, I try to set up a time to meet up. I usually do better if I have a conference "buddy" to attend talks with. Last year I was mostly on my own at AAD, & it was really overwhelming. #womeninmedicine

@mmteacherdoc @colleenmfarrell @MedicalCollege Hmmm. Disingenuous to have a manel on this topic. You need 1:1 women to men. The women can tell you what they need, what is missing, locally, & what they know about other women’s experiences more broadly. The men are not going to be able to do that. #womeninmedicine. @darakass
