Carina Seah, PhD @CarinaSeah
@womeninmedchat A1: I'm just beginning my career, but participating in research in undergrad made me pursue a master's and influenced my decision to apply MD PhD. Realizing the number of patients I could affect from the bench doing translational research was powerful. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat @petradMD @taylor_bono Good evening everyone! Valerie Fitzhugh, pathologist from New Jersey, glad to make it to the chat! #WomenInMedicine
Carina Seah, PhD @CarinaSeah

Sara Beltrán Ponce, MD @SaraBelPonMD
@womeninmedchat A1: I didn't want to go straight to #medschool, so I spent 2 months doing sanitation work in Cambodia and the rest of the year with @CityYearMKE! This solidified my passion for global and public health which has become a huge part of my future goals. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@melanie_fritz_ @womeninmedchat @petradMD @taylor_bono Safe travels Melanie! #WomenInMedicine
Ali Mientus @amientus04
@womeninmedchat A1: I was talking to a chief resident at an interview about how I enjoy teaching, and she told me about how she’s getting a Master’s in medical education. I never even knew something like that existed, and now it’s in my future goals. #womeninmedicine
Carina Seah, PhD @CarinaSeah
@InduPartha @womeninmedchat @petradMD @taylor_bono Oh gosh, no! I am constantly overwhelmed by the accomplishments of everyone in this chat! #WomenInMedicine
Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@womeninmedchat When my mother was undergoing chemo for lung cancer and I asked for a leave (unpaid) I was pressured not to do so. At that moment I realized that no one would put my needs front and centre. #WomenInMedicine
Shereese Maynard, MS; MBA 😷 She/Her @ShereeseMayMba
Good evening all. I'm Shereese. This chat offered an opportunity to take a break from writing a module on infection control during medication administration, so thank you. #womeninmedicine https://t.co/f2KNDKHSCL

@sarabelpon @womeninmedchat @petradMD @taylor_bono @Bucks @NBA Hi Sara! My Nets won their first playoff game yesterday and I am stoked! #WomenInMedicine
Indu Partha, MD FACP @InduPartha
@womeninmedchat A1: early on- marriage and motherhood. Both planned and expected but set a trajectory. More recently, the bitterness I felt at my job made me realize I had to make a change. Didn’t expect to start a “new career” this late but SO glad I did! #WomeninMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@womeninmedchat A1 For me a huge career defining moment was having really kind attendings in my 3rd year who shared their experiences with me and welcomed me into their clinical space thereby allowing me to comfortably explore career options and ultimately decide on surgery! #WomeninMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@careyjans @womeninmedchat @petradMD @taylor_bono @EmoryMSTP Welcome Carey! #WomenInMedicine
Sara Beltrán Ponce, MD @SaraBelPonMD
@AliMientus @womeninmedchat I heard the same thing on the interview trail, and I'm super curious to learn more! Especially since #radonc is not well known amongst med students, and I'd love to increase awareness of the field. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@ShreyaTrivediMD @womeninmedchat @petradMD @taylor_bono Hey Shreya! #WomenInMedicine

R Klein @RKleinMD
@AliMientus @womeninmedchat I Finished my masters in MedEd after years of being an attending. Wish I did it sooner. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat A1: Mine was not matching orthopaedics. While I was shocked (great grades, steps, more than enough places to rank), it was exactly what needed to happen. I have an amazing career in pathology and I don’t look back!!!! #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@sarabelpon @AliMientus @womeninmedchat I would have loved to have Rad Onc content in my curriculum. I feel like I really don’t understand what it is! #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Hunt MD @drjenniferhunt
@AliMientus @womeninmedchat I did an MEd as a combined degree in medical school. I found it totally by accident from a flyer in my mailbox. Has definitely changed my path. #womeninmedicine
Shereese Maynard, MS; MBA 😷 She/Her @ShereeseMayMba
When I worked in the peds sector, I realized "coordinated care" was not a thing as I thought. A pediatrician laughed at the notion. Just then I decided to advocate for pediatric medically fragile children & their families. #advocacy #womeninmedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@InduPartha @womeninmedchat I actually havent heard that ! Will need to remind myself WHEN the next rejection comes in #WomeninMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@AliMientus @womeninmedchat That sounds like something I should look into! #MastersInMedicalEducation #WomenInMedicine
Carina Seah, PhD @CarinaSeah
@sarabelpon @womeninmedchat @CityYearMKE Absolutely. That sounds incredible. I think I have been hesitant because I am always sensitive and worried about "Voluntourism" and contributing to an exploitive "volunteering" experience. How did you vet the org you went with? #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@ShreyaTrivediMD @womeninmedchat I’ve been practicing gratitude post-match (advice from our Dean on Match Day actually) and am writing thank you cards to all of the people who left a positive mark on me throughout medical school so they know how much it meant. #WomenInMedicine
#WomenInMedicine Chat @womeninmedchat
Thanks so much for sharing everybody, now it's time for Q2: What are some ways you experienced adversity in medical school? How did you overcome it? #WomenInMedicine https://t.co/ts9zcu2BQN
Melanie Fritz @melanie_fritz_
@womeninmedchat A1. after my undergrad degree in sociology, thought i wanted to do social work. after working at an infectious disease clinic, and getting to spend time in the hospital, i realized that i *loved* being in the hospital - and started the med school app process! #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@MdSheryl @womeninmedchat I’m so sorry Sheryl... #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@sarabelpon @AliMientus @womeninmedchat Absolutely! There are so many fields I wish I knew existed- not that it would have necessarily changed my decision but it would be good to be informed. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@jhuntpath @womeninmedchat So am I! It’s the best thing that could have EVER happened to me professionally! #WomenInMedicine
Jennifer Hunt MD @drjenniferhunt
@womeninmedchat A1: Being thrown into the deep end of something I could barely handle early in my career was career defining. I survived. NO...I thrived. It was very hard though! #womeninmedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat #WomenInMedicine
R Klein @RKleinMD
@womeninmedchat A1. Being faced with health issues and disability. Realized that med culture doesn’t make it easy. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@petradMD @womeninmedchat @taylor_bono Thanks Petra! Always great to “see” you! #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl

Dr. Jennifer Chen, MD FAAP 林 明 堯 @DrJenChen4kids
@DrFNA @AliMientus @womeninmedchat Yes, there are lots of MEd programs; some places also call it Master of Academic Medicine (no COI for USC, just happen to know more about this one because my asst PD did it) #womeninmedicine https://t.co/qMy7vCx6rp
Jennifer Hunt MD @drjenniferhunt
@womeninmedchat A2: I struggled with genetics in medical school. In fact, I think I was failing it! I had a wonderful professor who took me on as his personal project. He just emailed me, 20 years later! Great mentor! #womeninmedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat A2. Had a family member quite sick and part of me felt bad for myself that others didnt have to spend an hr or 2/day taking care family things. It forced me to become much more intentional and focused bc time and #predictability of the day were not on my side #WomeninMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA

Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@JajjaNadia @womeninmedchat I took my leave and promised myself to learn from the experience. I decided to take advice from a colleague to "never feel bad for doing the right thing". Helped me to clarify what matters most to me #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@CarinaSeah @womeninmedchat Some rejections were much harder than others. For me, I often deal with pain by immersing myself in something else. As @InduPartha said, rejections are often a *redirection* #WomeninMedicine

Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat A2: My worst moment came in my personal life as an MS2. My mom died of colon cancer and I struggled. She made me promise that I would stay in school and keep working hard. Her strength was my strength. Her determination for me to succeed kept me going. #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@RKleinMD @womeninmedchat But I’m sure your experiences as a patient are makin you a better doctor. I love the #DocsWithDisabilities campaign for highlighting the unique contributions that those of us with chronic disease/disability bring to medicine #WomenInMedicine

@womeninmedchat #WomenInMedicine Q1: Hubby getting a job in San Diego when I was PGY3...honestly I’d envisioned myself staying as chief then attending in LA. Was lucky to match in #PedsHM fellowship, which has helped me make many local and national connections!
Melanie Fritz @melanie_fritz_
@DrFNA @jhuntpath @womeninmedchat wow! you seem so passionate about pathology- it's amazing to realize it wasn't your initial choice. gives me hope that i can thrive with unexpected twists and turns that may come my way 😊 #WomenInMedicine

Carina Seah, PhD @CarinaSeah
@DevikaDasMD @womeninmedchat I'm glad you rode it out!! As the only member of my entire extended family headed to medical school, I am so worried about this! How did you find the "insider information" or resources to eventually succeed? #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@AntiWheatGirl @melanie_fritz_ @womeninmedchat Please write about ur experience and/or the impact its made on the ppl who have received it. It can be inspire others as well. Good medical educators are not given enough value and often most of these things are not compensated but that note can go a long way #WomeninMedicine
Nadia Jamil, M.D. @NadiaJamilMD
@womeninmedchat A1: finished my undergrad at the University of Alberta and moved down to the states- did a Masters of Science while I established residency for TX, & met some great friends. I think it helped me grow as a person and gain some independence before medical school! #WomenInMedicine
Carrie Bernard MD she/her @carriedbernard
@sarabelpon @womeninmedchat I found other supportive people after the initial shock. We need to find our friends and remember when they need support #WomenInMedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat I had a horrible adjustment. It was the first time I ever left home really (college was 5 minutes from home). First time I ever had to study. My friend who went with me to med school helped me. And I got a cat... And my dad visited A LOT. #WomenInMedicine
Susan Hingle @SusanHingle
@womeninmedchat A2: Sexual harassment. Imposter syndrome. Low self-esteem. So grateful for an amazing mentor who helped me so much. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@melanie_fritz_ @jhuntpath @womeninmedchat I did a path elective after I had already applied ortho, and I really liked it. Even said I wished I had known about it sooner. Funny how these things turn out! It probably shaped my choice to subspecialize in bone/soft tissue pathology. #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@careyjans @womeninmedchat SO proud of you Carey! Also highlighting your grit :) #WomeninMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@ShreyaTrivediMD @melanie_fritz_ @womeninmedchat I definitely will. I didn’t think to write anything about it but I think you’re so right - I’ve had amazing teachers that haven’t gotten the credit they deserve #WomenInMedicine
R Klein @RKleinMD
@DrFNA @womeninmedchat Amazing. #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@melanie_fritz_ @jhuntpath @womeninmedchat And everything is what you make it. I decided to look at it as a opportunity instead of a failure! #WomenInMedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat Not sure that is HOW I got through. I got through counting on my support system. I found the lecture halls so dark and depressing. My friends and family got me through. #WomenInMedicine

Marguerite Duane @mduanemd
@womeninmedchat A2. Experienced greatest adversity before Med school. After graduating in 3 years with honors from @Cornell & earning MHA I did not get into Med school first 2 years I applied. Met with Med school admissions who said my MHA said I was not serious about being MD #WomenInMedicine
Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat A3. I took a gap yr btw undergrad and med school and was one of the best things. I didn't expect to get a fulbright and at the same time, felt guilty leaving my family but it was one of the few times in my life I truly felt free and actually lived for me #WomeninMedicine
Elizabeth Newell, MD @md_newell
@womeninmedchat I think I'm starting one now after being in a somewhat toxic place, trying to find my dream lifelong practice to go to perhaps. We will see! #WomenInMedicine
R Klein @RKleinMD
@DevikaDasMD @womeninmedchat Agree! You feel automatically behind bc all the ‘doctor kids’ seem to know how it works. And having to explain it (and why you are never around) to family and friends over and over. #WomenInMedicine
Melanie Fritz @melanie_fritz_
@DevikaDasMD @CarinaSeah @womeninmedchat i also don't have anyone medical people in my extended family- i found connecting with students a year ahead of me in school (through extracurriculars, etc) to be SO helpful. all the info is fresh in their minds and they are often happy to help! #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@womeninmedchat A3. I didn’t take one during but I took 2 yrs between undergrad and medical school. I think that was truly the best decision I could have made. It allowed me to grow up and become more independent and sure of myself as a person before diving into medical school #WomenInMedicine
Bonnie Callahan @bcallahan430
@womeninmedchat A3. I cannot speak to an extra year of medical school, but I had to take an extra year of residency due to illness. I made use of it reading and thinking and while I always must account for it, it was not the end of the world (though it felt like it then). #WomenInMedicine

Shreya P. Trivedi MD, MHPE @ShreyaTrivediMD
@womeninmedchat A3. I came into medical school with such clarity and was not distracted as much bc I had given myself the space to live fully/freely (though i know med school shouldnt where u cant do that too but med school certainly was more stressful than freeing for me lol #WomeninMedicine
Elizabeth Newell, MD @md_newell
@womeninmedchat Being a female, I think in retrospect I notice it more than I did at the time, was just happy to be in medical school, got many inappropriate questions comments in school, rounds, and interviewing, most things don't bother me though so it just rolled off me. #WomenInMedicine
Priyanka V. Chugh, MD, MS @AntiWheatGirl
@RKleinMD @DevikaDasMD @womeninmedchat Explaining to family and friends is the most frustrating part. They want you to succeed but then they also want you around and explaining over and over again why you’re missing things is SO painful sometimes #WomenInMedicine
R Klein @RKleinMD
@DevikaDasMD @womeninmedchat The only doctor I knew when I went to med school was my own. And it wasn’t like a remotely close relationship/ mentor type situation. Literally just shots and school physicals! #WomenInMedicine

Carey Jansen, PhD @careyjans
@womeninmedchat A3. Does 4ish (😅) yrs PhD count? Personally I was *way* burnt out and discouraged after M1/M2 and my PhD time has given me the time and intellectual freedom to rediscover myself and my curiosity, creativity, and passion for this career again #doubledocs #burnout #WomenInMedicine
Valerie A. Fitzhugh, MD @DrFNA
@womeninmedchat A3: we see a lot of students doing gap years as a research year to work with someone in their specialty of choice to make them a more competitive applicant. This seems to be working as many of our students are matching in competitive specialties after doing this #WomenInMedicine
Ruth Habte, MD @ruthmhabte
@womeninmedchat A1: In my fourth year of pharmacy school (my undergrad degree), I did a rotation specific to maternal child health and absolutely loved it. Five years later, it still fascinates me and I’ve matched to Obs gyn. #WomenInMedicine
