he physician practicing in the 21st century will need an array of competencies to deal with the increasing complexities of health care delivery, rapid advances in medical knowledge, and changing societal and patient expectations. In the not-so-distant past residencies were considered to be periods of ?training? whose goal was to produce medical experts. It is increasingly recognized that in addition to being medical experts, tomorrow?s doctors must be effective communicators, advocates, scholars, professionals, collaborators and managers. In the apprenticeship model of residency training these skills were assumed to have been acquired by role-modeling or self-instruction.
