I think one of the must practical and useful uses of music in caregiving for Daddy is when we need to divert or distract or change modes. Like when he decides he wants to sit down while walking I start singing a new song and he joins in and walks ok. #Alzchat

@SrCareCorner So true - the old hymns from childhood and those songs that are so deeply embedded in Dad's mind still resonate! Even as he is losing the words he still sings the melody. The melodies will be the last to go as the brain is wired that way. #Alzchat

@MyTwoElaines The neat thing about music is there are so many kinds and genres & different uses for each. We use classical music to calm (Dad always listened to it in his office and car so I know that's his preference); show tunes, sing-a-long tunes (Mitch Miller is great!) for energy #Alzchat

One of the reasons music works so well with PWD is that the part of the brain that processes music is less affected than the just language part. #Alzchat

I got an Amazon Alexa and use that alot now - I have my Pandora synched so the Alexa can be across the room and I can just say "Alexa play..." if I need a sudden change of mood for Daddy - love it! Anyone else have one and use it in #caregiving? #Alzchat

As Dad has lost ability to enjoy, follow TV shows or movies, he can still enjoy musicals - not complicated plots, just lots of great music! It's nice - we can enjoy them too while caregiving. This year he really enjoyed Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - lots of music! #Alzchat

If you struggle to think of music your loved one who has dementia would enjoy, think about music popular when he/she was in late teens and 20's. That's usually what sticks. Also religious songs, experiences in childhood etc. #Alzchat
