Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @Dementiawho Absolutely. It can be hard not to just crack on and perform a task yourself (easier, quicker, safer), but maintaining that small amount of independence can support their identity #alzchat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @creativitycare Memories can serve as anchors to identities. My study found that ensuring an older person or care home resident has access to important anchors can support a sense of identity #Alzchat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @creativitycare The balance between the caring role and supporting an identity can often be at odds. Balance can be difficult. But important to remember that even small changes make a big difference #alzchat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @Dementiawho Can be especially difficult is someone has always had a strong sense of independence. It can be quite distressing to realise you’re not trusted to make yourself a coffee or nip to the shop alone etc. #alzchat

Total Legacy Care @TotalLegacyCare Giving a person time and allowing them the time to make their own decisions and support them, rather than doing what you think is best to speed things along, can go such a long way #PatienceIsAVirtue #AlzChat
Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @creativitycare A feeling of connection with a group is important. If in a care home, it goes beyond who you happen to be around. It isn’t enough to forge a meaningful connection and support identity #alzchat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @TotalLegacyCare Agree. Everyone makes mistakes or poor decisions. Isn’t always down to a condition. It’s human nature! #alzchat

Total Legacy Care @TotalLegacyCare So true💛 #AlzChat
Total Legacy Care @TotalLegacyCare @Dementiawho How sad😔 And to what end, what does it achieve other than causing upset for something that is out of yours and your mum’s control 😔 #AlzChat
Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @Dementiawho From personal experience I can see family get frustrated/upset over seemingly minor things. But they can easily become major to that family member & signify to them the increasing severity of the dementia. “How could you forget x?!” = “Oh no are you really that bad?” #alzchat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @creativitycare Complicated further by, for some, the knowledge that you’re ill + advancing dementia, which makes it increasingly difficult to logistically and reasonably appreciate a changeable situation #alzchat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD I quite like how some care homes have bright and interesting pieces of information about each resident on their bedroom doors eg “I’m x and I enjoy y”, but identity work is more than summarising snippets of info. It’s about using that info to actively support identity #alzchat

Karrie Marshall @KarrieMarshall Just working with some organisations at the moment... yes, the unravelling of good work can be quite extensive if lots of staff changes. One hopes that we will soon reach a point where new staff already have more person-centred awareness, so less of an issue (eventually) #AlzChat

Total Legacy Care @TotalLegacyCare How lovely! 🧡 #AlzChat
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE Agree that it is very tough to balance. Supporting someone to maintain identity & independence takes more of a care partner’s time, more patience, and more careful thought & planning. And sometimes dealing with criticism from others. #AlzChat

Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD Must dash now. Great discussion! - lots of ways identity can be helped and harmed. Further complicated by the move to long-term care, but certainly not insurmountable. One final 🔌 for my PhD and paper!: https://t.co/0N9AlMRwey #alzchat
Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @nursesKidONE Yes. Can lead to disagreements between family/carers as to what’s “worth” the effort and what isn’t #Alzchat
Caroline Bartle @3Uknz @creativitycare Identity is part of supporting independence but it’s so much more. I’ve been learning today about self harm in older adults and how much it’s linked to loosing control. I’m still upset by the stats that I have been reading about today - it’s so prevalent yet preventable #AlzChat https://t.co/lbAyKBbon4
Dr Katie Paddock-Hall @KatiePaddockPhD @creativitycare Yes. Allowing for changeable personalities (we are all allowed a stroppy day!) as well as personalities that might not gel with your own #alzchat
nursesKidONE @nursesKidONE A care partner also has to be prepared to advocate to maintain identity & independence of PLWD when dealing w/ healthcare & social care professionals, unlike w/ heart patients, who are encouraged to be independent. #AlzChat
Hilgos Foundation @IRememberBetter #AlzChat soon winding down for today. Thanks to all for joining / listening in. see you next Monday 3pmEST/8pmUK @creativitycare
Karrie Marshall @KarrieMarshall yes objectification & oppression can happen unwittingly, e.g. not giving ppl credit for making choices or having opinions; assuming ppl need extra protection etc. There is such an interplay between identity & behaviours, attitudes of ppl around us #AlzChat
