Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Hello anatomists! The digestive system functions on a 24-hour cycle, the circadian rhythm, that is largely under control of the day-night changes in light #anatq #journalclub
Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Gut microbiota can influence the circadian rhythm of the intestinal wall to promote nutrient absorption and adipogenesis #anatq #journalclub
Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Together the day-night cycle and microbiome regulate metabolism and fat storage providing a potential link to shift-work/travel and obesity #anatq #journalclub
Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Q1: Does the gut microbiome indirectly receive signals from the superchiasmatic nucleus? #anatq
Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Q2: Is increased absorption of nutrients beneficial to microbiota? e.g. developed to keep host alive during periods of fasting? #anatq
Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Q3: What outside factors could regulate circadian rhythms in other organ systems? #anatq
Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 Q4: Is it possible to see evidence of the gut microbiome on a histology slide? #anatq
Dr. Valerie O'Loughlin @vdoloughlin @JulieDoll2 Good #anatQ ! I am pretty sure you can't see the #gut #microbiome using #lightmicroscopy .. think u need to use #EM #anatomy

AskAnatomist @AskAnatomist Is there a connection between the hypothalamus and gut microbiome? #anatq https://t.co/OIvAGbmGId

Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 @vdoloughlin Could the appearance of the epithelial cells change with different microbiota? #anatq
Dr. Valerie O'Loughlin @vdoloughlin @AskAnatomist #anatQ I personally think there is a connection bt the #hypothalamus & #gut #microbiome , but have no proof. Lots of #nutrition studies at #expbio have examined aspects of microbiome...fascinating!

Julie Doll MS @JulieDoll2 @anatomy_jackson @AskAnatomist Yes, and maybe eating habits? #anatq
Jon Jackson @anatomy_jackson @JulieDoll2 @AskAnatomist Seriously. Stress (to a point); euphoria— all of these things impact our sleep-wake- #partyALLnight cycles, but I presume their through a #neuroendocrine axis. To invoke #microbiome in this might imply a hi-jacking or coup of normal systems #anatQ

Jon Jackson @anatomy_jackson @JulieDoll2 @AskAnatomist Absolutely. Good #anatq point. If diet modifies #u-biome (apologies for cheap MICRO imitation), and u-biome can modify N-E axis, however indirectly, your diet can impact in both short & long term. May be wickedly hard to #parse out effects, tho
